This is a "luxury" quality cutting board -- much nicer than my plastic cutting boards. The nice bamboo color would be nice for entertaining cookin. It is large The groove along the side is deep and wide. Plus it is free of toxic dyes, stains, plastics, chemical resins and formaldehyde.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Reel and but Arrived with Tip Broken Delivered in Package Too Short, June 6, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a good reel. The rod appears to be a brittle lessor-quality rod.

The rod and reel arrived with the rod tip broken off. The package appears to be a bit short for the pole and did not have any protective wrapping inside.

I have since figured out with several rods and reel combos that sometimes a good reel is paired with a cheap and brittle rod.

Amazon took the return. I will be ordering a reel and a rod separate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Widescreen. A+ Performances. B+ Staging and Production, December 12, 2013
This is not widescreen. It is older.

The performances of the orchestra and singers are phenomenal. The orchestra is soaring with precise expression. The singing has nice vocal expressiveness to change with the scenes (which is not always the case with some singers with some shows). The is the Met -- the best.

If the music is what is most important to you, this is sublime.

The production is very good but not as exciting as other productions or shows that sacrifice singing just a tad for charismatic, young actors. I thought Don Giovanni maybe should be a bit younger and slimmer. The somewhat dark and slightly drab clothing and staging looks like a typical opera stage and not a "wow" vibrant set. Also, the video is not full widescreen much of the time.

Overall, this may have the best Don performances available on DVD but not the best widescreen production.

Music/Singing: A
Production/Staging: B+

Be aware that this same DVD is also listed at Amazon.com as B000787WZG and has a better selection of used DVDs. Do a search with that number. The reviews are very good there, too. Had I seen that earlier I would have bought one there instead of through the Met website.

I have not seen all the various version of this opera on DVD but I concluded this was the best one to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Horrific Story of the SS Einsetzguppen, Early Holocaust and WWII, December 7, 2013
This book was written by a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist/historian. It is very disturbing to read. Being a World War II history buff, I know this story to be true. However, the author makes estimates of the number of people murdered and overstates the amount. The actual killed in these actions was perhaps 1.5 million based on the works of others, but the author uses inferential information, such as bullets used, in his estimates overstate the number a bit. Other than that error, the book is a chilling and much needed history of the subject.

Many people may not realize that the exterminations of Jews and others in Eastern Europe so Hitler could have "Living Space" started as mass executions. They recruited cold-blooded people who could do this, such as former prison inmates, and anyone else who would not excuse himself voluntarily. However, even those people could not handle the killings after awhile.

The stories are very sad to hear. Picking up a child by the hair and shooting the child in the back of the head. Making prisoners dig their own graves before mass executions. Simply horrific. Some of the theories as to why may not be appreciated by history purists, but good books are written with flair and the author is writing with a purpose. The why additions can be ignored if so desired.

The SS Einsetzguppen divisions perpetrated these mass killings in their official "actions". Then the genocide was moved to the extermination camps, such as Auschwitz, to be more efficient.

This is one of the saddest stories in history. People need to not forget what happened.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece Production. Mozart Masterpiece. Truly Great for Non-Opera Lovers or Anyone New to Opera, December 7, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mozart - Cosi fan Tutte (DVD)
This is a masterpiece!

The story is both hilarious and clever. The music by Mozart is among the greatest ever written and so perfectly matches the acting.

This production on Blu-ray is a masterpiece and the standard by which other opera DVDs should be judged.

If you are new to opera, definitely watch this. It will shatter any bad myths you have about opera. It is so entertaining for anyone.

Refer to the other reviews for the specifics as to why it is so great. My only criticism is that Anke Vondung seems to frown in her eyes too often but sings wonderfully and great overall.

Fantastic singing and acting by Miah Persson, Luca Pisaroni, Topi Lehtipuu, Anke Vondung, Nicolas Rivenq and Ainhoa Garmendia. Persson is young and gorgeous. Terrific performance by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (on period instruments and one of my all-time favorite orchestras worldwide) and hilarious story.

By the way, this opera should only be performed with YOUNG actors for the four main parts, especially the two women and especially Dorabella (looking like an older teenager ideally) or the story does not make sense. The title should be translated as "Girls Are Like That." Da Ponte poked fun at men characters in his other two masterpiece Mozart operas, and now he pokes fun at young women.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cheap and Old Looking. Instead, a Different Excellent Newer Production is Better, December 6, 2013
Old, old production. This one has close-ups and is filmed like a 1970s TV movie, and these still shots seem to move slowly. The director is good with this approach for personal drama movies but not this opera. The stage sets, when they appear, look like a second-rate regional theater production.

The screen size is the size of old TVs, not widescreen, and not very good video quality -- more like an old Saturday's 1970s kid's show. This may be good for kids.

Having seen both DVDs, I highly recommend Mozart - Die Zauberflote [Blu-ray] instead. The production is fantastic in this newer pruduction.

If you like Mozart and/or opera, also consider the even better Blu-ray opera of Mozart's Mozart: Cosi Fan Tutte [Blu-ray] with Miah Persson, Luca Pisaroni, Topi Lehtipuu, Anke Vondung, Nicolas Rivenq and Ainhoa Garmendia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional and Gets Better, December 6, 2013
Outstanding, and it gets better as the show goes on. Great video. Great filming. Great singing. Great acting. I did not care for the outfits of the Queen of the Night and the trio at the beginning, because they are unflattering, but that is just personal taste.

If you are a fan of Mozart and/or opera, also consider the even better Blu-ray opera of Mozart's Mozart - Cosi fan Tutte with Miah Persson, Luca Pisaroni, Topi Lehtipuu, Anke Vondung, Nicolas Rivenq and Ainhoa Garmendia.

3.0 out of 5 stars Split Decision. Awful at Times Mixed with Brilliant Genesis Insights. Great for Secular Non-Believers, November 24, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book unearths the lesson about human nature and presents them to a general secular audience. Genesis is brilliant and everyone could learn the lesson of Genesis.

If you are secular, this book should be your first choice about Genesis while actually reading Genesis at the same time. It would be an exceptional introduction if you are a non-believer.

However, it definitely should not be your go to book if you are a christian. (For that I would recommend the Collegeville Bible Commentary). Some comments in the book are offensively radical to many Christians.

Make sure you read genesis from the Bible as you read this.

Frustrating. Overall, at times one of the worst books I have read and yet it contains some brilliant gems of Genesis interpretive information that make it invaluable for understanding certain pieces Genesis.

Also, 1/3 of the book is useless filler.

The good insights could have been summarized at 1/3 of the length. This feels like a well researched dissertation and experienced insights stretched into a book with entertaining filler as fluff.

Your first-choice study guide should be the Collegeville Bible Commentary -- not this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre. Horrible Book Overall Offset by Strength of Historical Details, November 24, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The context of this book is simply poor. If I were writing a book about the Vikings, this would not be it. So many interesting tidbits are missing. Try looking up many interesting historical facts to learn about that and you will not find it. Instead, the book is loaded with information that is third-rate compared to things that are not included.

Some people say it is hard to read because it is loaded with so many details. I say it is hard to read because it is missing so many interesting details and loaded with poor content and third-rate writing.

Go to the table of contents and try to look up anything related to war, war tactics, military tactics, warriors, weapons, battle tactics, axes, spears, swords, battle stories, code of honor of warriors, views of religion as it relates to Viking war, etc. You will not find that. How can this book be described as having too many details?

The book succeeds marvelously at making such an interesting subject arcane.

I read through many fascinating books about the Vikings at the library that were way, way way better.

Those weaknesses are offset by strong but mind-numbing general history of historical events.
