4.0 out of 5 stars The Pain, Dedication, and Duplicity of Olympic Lifting., December 24, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This was an interesting book written by a lifter who was twice banned for steroids and then arrested and held in Brazil for drug trafficking. Since the book was written by the athlete himself, we get only his side of the story. When he is talking about the poverty and training of his childhood and youth the story is compelling. When he is explaining away his bans and arrests it is less compelling. This book is worth reading for the insight it brings into the pain and dedication required to rise to the highest ranks of Olympic lifting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read For Master's Lifters (And Their Coaches!), December 24, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm a 53 year old who recently took up Master's Weightlifting. This book is one of the only books I've ever seen directed towards Master's athletes. The author is well-respected in the Olympic lifting community and provides practical hands-on advice about how to enter the sport and how to improve. I thoroughly enjoyed the profiles of ten Master's lifters. I highly recommend this book to both Master's athletes and their coaches.

5.0 out of 5 stars Austen Meets Kasparov, December 24, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I love Jane Austen, and I loved Anthea's trilogy about The Dark Lake. I wasn't sure how the author of a book like The Dark Lake, which reminds me of Catcher in the Rye meets Go Ask Alice, would handle the wit and dialogue from Pride and Prejudice. She handled it extremely well. I know a little about chess but knew practically nothing about the chess world. It was fascinating to learn about the characters in the chess world and the parallels between their behavior and the English characters from the time of Austen. I recommend this book to Austen fans and to anyone who likes a good quick read that is filled with witty repartee.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical Advice From Someone Who Practices What He Preaches, December 24, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This was a good quick read about how to find or make the time for fitness while still being able to work. Nick practices what he preaches, training for and competing in triathlons while developing companies as an entrepreneur, so his advice comes from the perspective of someone who is actually using the techniques to succeed in sport and business.

4.0 out of 5 stars Valuable Read Before Hiking The Salkantay Trail, December 24, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book as part of my pre-reading before heading to Peru for a couple weeks of trekking followed by a visit to Machu Picchu. The book was full of facts and figures and detailed accounts from the Spanish point of view. Perhaps because the Inca were conquered by the Spanish the cliché that "History Is Written By The Victors" is evident in this work. The only surviving accounts of the period are from Spain... The author explains clearly that the only primary sources are from the victors, and that even those may have been fanciful accounts by individuals who were more interested in their own self-aggrandizement to the Spanish Crown than in accuracy. I enjoyed the book and it was a valuable read before going to Peru.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good reference book, November 26, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book was exactly what it said it was, cues and corrections for Oly lifting. I keep it in my gym bag when I go to lift and reference it when I feel something is off in my swing or in someone else's swing. The pictures are plentiful and the cues are short. A good reference book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reacher Rocks, June 7, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It seems like every installment in the Reacher series just keeps getting better. The women are hotter, the plots are thicker, and Reacher keeps getting in deeper and deeper. This is one of my favorite Lee Child books. If you like Reacher, you'll love the Affair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading Before Heading to Peru, June 7, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you're going to travel all the way to Peru to see Machu Picchu, which I highly recommend, please consider reading this book first. You will gain insights into not just Machu Picchu, but also Llactapata and other sites. After reading this, you may feel like setting off on your own Andean adventure, which I can also highly recommend.
