AmazonBasics USB Powered Computer Speakers (A100)
AmazonBasics USB Powered Computer Speakers (A100)
Price: $13.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Not stunning, but OK for a pair of desktop speakers, September 16, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
For the price, a decent set of speakers, but lacking in depth and range...
At $13.00, their compact size and positive reviewes were worth a gamble to replace my GoGroove units
The sound of the Amazon Basics units was adequate, but was not an improvement over the GoGroove units.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value voltage checker and low voltage warning, September 16, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This unit displays battery voltage and provides an audio low voltage alarm.
The unit has a three panel, eight segment voltage display, (the unit automatically displayed battery total voltage, followed by the voltage for each cell), a pair of mini speaker horns, a set of seven connector pins and a momentary switch for adjusting the LO VOLT warning.
The "instructions" on the back of the unit are all but useful, and require amplification.
To check voltage, with the pins facing down, the battery's balance plug is connected to the pins with the ground (usually black) lead at the far left pin.
The LOW VOLTAGE audio alarm is adjusted by connecting a battery and pressing a tiny rectangular momentary switch between the speakers that cycles through the available voltages, the last one displayed being the chosen voltage at which the warning will sound.
The display provides the total voltage, and the "per cell" voltage, and an alarm can be set to sound a very audible alarm when the voltage reaches a preset per cell value (I use 3.5 volts), which provides adequate power to land the airplane before running out of electrons...
I have purchased about a dozen of these for checking LiPo voltages on the work bench, at my battery charger, and in my field box. I also install one in each model I plan to fly on a given day, and given their low cost, am able to give them to friends to try.
A great value tool for the e-flier!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tough, strong all purpose tape, September 16, 2015
This tape is much stronger than standard clear "scotch tape", and is thicker, tougher and more resilient than "packing tape". I use it for repairing flight control hinges on radio control models, for protection on surfaces that contact the ground, and for repairing foam wings on ultra micro models... A real "must have" for RC foam airplane modelers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun in a miniature package, September 5, 2015
This review is from: UMX Radian BNF (Toy)
I had never flown a micro RC anything, mostly due their susceptibility to the slightest puff of wind. The AS3X flight stabilizer technology intrigued me, and I bought it to see how it worked.
The design and construction are simple and well thought out and the materials appear to be good quality. From box opening to ready to fly was under an hour (including reading the instructions and finding a phillips head screwdriver).
The glider flies well, is predictable and solid for its size, and does penetrate wind well (up to my personal maximum of around 8 kt, as it becomes definitely un-fun to fly at higher wind speeds).
The AS3X stabilization system is very helpful for keeping the airplane right side up in gusty wind conditions, but requires that the model is not moved for five seconds while binding to the transmitter, and is a hindrance in "reading" the model's reaction to thermals. In non-stabilized gliders, a thermal is indicated by an uncommanded change in bank or pitch attitude, which is what the AS3X is designed to eliminate, making interpreting the conventional signs much more difficult. What seems to work is to watch for the glider beginning to bounce around, which indicates encountering a thermal, and then try to figure out which direction lift can be found.
The model is extremely light (1.5 oz/43 g) which means that it can gain altitude in nearly any thermal activity. Since it is small and finds lift easily, I thought it a good idea to paint the lower surfaces of the wing and horizontal stabilizer for better visibility. I can attest that the model gets small very quickly and the paint job improves visibility.

PROS - simple construction, good flight characteristics
CONS - learning curve for binding and thermal hunting

Flyzone Flap Optional Calypso Linkage Set
Flyzone Flap Optional Calypso Linkage Set
Price: $4.99
7 used & new from $2.25

5.0 out of 5 stars Good addition for Calypso, September 5, 2015
When using a modern transmitter, to get the most out of the Calypso, flaps add functionality and improved performance...
Flaps added to a simple 5 or 6 channel transmitter allow the pilot to add drag and land the airplane more consistently and accurately.
When using an advanced radio, the ability to "mix" flaps, aileron and elevators provide improved performance for different flight regimes (launch, cruise, speed, thermal, landing), making the Calypso a relatively inexpensive trainer for advanced radio capabilities.
Note -
Five or six channel radio required. (1 channel each for throttle, aileron, rudder, elevator, flaps)
Two additional 9g micro servos are required for flap installation.
( or equivalent)

PROS - Good quality materials, easy installation, improved landing accuracy, additional flight modes available with advanced transmitters.
CONS - a bit pricey for what is provided. After adding a couple of servos, the mod will cost around $20-$30

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, low cost, simple motor glider, September 5, 2015
I rejoined RC flying after 15 years of "life" happening... WOW have things changed for the better!! Foam airplanes, electric motors and miniature components make it easy to get up and flying for less than a couple of hours of psychotherapy (and far more beneficially)...
The Calypso combines the new technologies into an easily assembled, good flying recreational motor glider.
After studying the instruction manual, assembly took me about two hours for the "receiver ready" version, and the only hurdle was installing the tail onto the fuselage, but patiently following the instruction manual procedure and "encouraging" them into position results in their installation.
It has predictable, docile flight characteristics, a good glide ratio, and is fully capable of thermalling well in excess of 400 ft. At 400 feet altitude, the glider is easily visible. If flights to 1000 ft were to be made, painting the bottom of the wings in contrasting colors is recommended, as it will become nearly invisible. :D
Useful accessories are a comfortable chair to watch the flight, and a beverage, as when thermalling, it is easy to get 20+ minute flights with plenty of battery remaining.
Optional flaps are available, easy to install and recommended to increase drag for landing.
Once the basics of the airplane have been mastered, using an advanced transmitter system (another marvelous step forward in the hobby), I have used the Calypso as my "learning vehicle" for the new radio capabilities, including setting servo response, mixing flight controls for different flight regimes, adding telemetry that includes real time altitude and variometer (rising/sinking) audio.
IMO this is a great re-entrant glider, or the second or third airplane for someone new to the hobby, mostly because its design and construction do not tolerate much abuse, and landing on a given spot can be challenging.

PROS: Good quality materials, mostly well thought out design
Quick, mostly easy assembly, reasonable cost, docile flight characteristics
Replacement parts are available and reasonably priced.
CONS: Assembling tail to fuselage requires patience.
The aft fuselage tail attach structure is weak, allowing minimal impact on the horizontal stablilizer to twist, cracking the attach structure.
The forward fuselage will not tolerate much impact abuse, adding carbon fiber strips strengthens that area.
The forward fuselage is adequate for normal operations, but will not resist much of an impact. I glued carbon fiber strips inside the fuselage just below the canopy opening to increase its strength.

Overall, I am pleased with the purchase, and am enjoying flying the Calypso, and recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good quality attaching hardware, August 20, 2015

Excellent quality stainless steel hardware.
One problem with stainless steel threads is that they tend to "gall" under load*, making it difficult to turn the screw in the barrel Applying a little molybdenum sulfide or graphite grease on the threads make them easier to adjust.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good charger with a clunky interface, August 20, 2015
With four independent charger outputs, this charger allows the user to charge/discharge/balance from one to four batteries at once, of different chemistries.
The user interface has a bit of a learning curve to get the correct combination of battery chemistry, number of cells, charging current, etc, but the inputs are similar to many other chargers, which helps. Navigating the user interface is a bit clunky, but works once learned.
PROS: Solid construction. Able to simultaneously charge/discharge/balance up to four batteries, simple connection. Both 12V and 115V inputs. Beeper signals end of cycle.
CONS: Supplied with a limited number of balance boards and cables, and the buyer must supply battery terminal adapters. For working with multiple batteries at the same time, be sure to order enough cables and balance boards, and have adapters appropriate to the intended use... Seems to take a long time for 4S - 6S LiPo batteries, but charges them correctly.

NOTE: The 4 star rating due to the interface. A more user friendly interface would merit 5 stars.

AmazonBasics Hard Carrying Case for 5-Inch GPS - Black
AmazonBasics Hard Carrying Case for 5-Inch GPS - Black
Price: $9.49

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value semi-hard case for 5" GPS, August 8, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Semi hard case with two compartments separated by a soft elastic divider. The interior is a yellow orange color, with the "bottom" compartment being deeper than the "top", and fits the 5 inch Garmin Nuvi 2597 well. The divider is attached to the shallower top compartment. The case appears to be well made of good quality materials.
The case top is restrained by a pair of elastic strips attached at each end, limiting the opening between the two halves. Am unsure if that is a positive or negative... I have a nearly identically sized Case Logic case for an iOmega USB hard drive that opens flat, and I prefer that configuration for ease of access... If the strips create a problem, a couple of snips with a pair of scissors will cure it.
The case provides good protection for the GPS, with room to snugly fit the GPS, with the car charging and USB cables fitting nicely in the smaller top compartment.
There is not enough room in the case for the windshield mount. I also purchased the "sandbag" dashboard mount, and put it, the windshield mount and the hard case in a soft black zipper bag, providing storage, transportation and a place to "hide" the GPS on the car floor in a parking lot.
