4.0 out of 5 stars The raves are well deserved, save one, November 12, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
While it's hard to say more than all the rave reviews here have already said (about the great writing, acting, directing, editing), the one slight letdown is the surprise ending in episode eight. While it has some of the elements of any good surprise ending (i.e. that it would be hard to predict, yet it instantly makes sense of a couple of small details that just click into place when the revelation is made), nonetheless, it lacks one element that all *really* good surprise endings have -- that it feels like a natural development of one of the characters whom we already had gotten to know.

We just don't get enough information about the perpetrator to show in the end (a) why the perpetrator would have been capable of this act and (b) why those closest to him would not have suspected he possessed the character flaw that led to it. Because of those missing elements, this is just not in the same class as the great surprises in, for example, The Crying Game, The Sixth Sense, or House of Games, where in each case, a well-developed character suddenly has revealed another facet of his or her psyche, and it is something that feels as authentic as it is astounding.

That said, this series is very good, and better than 98% of what you see in both TV and cinema.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warning - Buy one size larger than usual, and you'll be OK, September 4, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Had to exchange the first pair because these definitely run too small. I have a closet full of size 9's that fit me just fine, but the size 9 in these was way tight - unwearable. Exchanged for a so-called "10" -- which I've never had to do before -- and honestly they are still a bit tight, but I like them.
Good for indoors (would not recommend for outside). Buy one size larger than usual, and then for the money, you've got good indoor slippers!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice notebook, expensive for what you get, January 27, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I had thought this was a four-pack of 80-page notebooks for 10.99. Nope, you are paying $10.99 for a single notebook. It's very nice. High quality paper, very opaque (you cannot see through to the next sheet), micro-perforation making it easy to tear, stylish design, colored page edges, very cool. Just, eleven bucks for 80 pages!
The description on Amazon is hard to decipher. These are standard 3-hole punched. The number "four" refers to, I suppose, that they make it in four colors, so you could conceivable buy one of each and have a different color for four subjects. Otherwise I see no correspondence of the number four to this product.
If labelled appropriately this would be a 5-star binder, but expensive. Giving three stars because the marketing language so poorly represents what you actually get.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fits the Swiss Tool perfectly, very nice upgrade, January 24, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Never mind that a cloth pouch comes with the Swiss Tool. You want this leather one, trust me. Feels better, easier to slip on your belt, clearly will be more durable, and looks classier. The Swiss Tool is a rather pricey item so why not get it a good pouch? Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Works OK but has one frightening manufacturer's defect, January 24, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This works about like any adapter, but after a few months (just barely past Amazon's return window), the cord started to pull out of the base unit, exposing live wire! Granted it's a low voltage (20 volts at 3.25 amps) wire, but still not right.

Over the years, I've owned over a dozen of laptops of different brands, and I've used scads of different chargers and I have *never* had a laptop charger do this before.
So no, it's not because I'm doing something silly like playing jump-rope with the charger! It's a defect.

I am writing this review to warn others, because on inspection of how a rubber fitting holds the cord-end in place (or rather, fails to hold it in place), I cannot believe this was a one-time fluke -- rather I feel that it could be inherent in the design, sorry to say.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good sound and comfort, but fails to auto-connect, making you do the pairing sequence over and over, November 23, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Fails to auto-connect; you have to do the pairing sequence every time.
Tried two of these units, both failed to remember the last pairing and re-connect automatically, as they are supposed to.
This was with an up-to-date Sony Bluetooth transmitter that works fine with everything else -- the problem is absolutely in these headphones.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great features for the dollar, but alleged size adjustment not as simple as they make it sound, November 21, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The description on Amazon is very sparse and does not (as of this writing) explain the sizing method of this item. The item boasts a removable insole and a somewhat stretchable heel loop. By including the insole, you can reduce 1/2 size, or by stretching the heel strap, you can increase the size. Thus it is supposed to be adjustable.

Sounds great. Problem is, the insole (if you need it, like I do, in order to get the fit right) immediately starts slipping out of the back of the shoe with every step you take. Notice that there is just open space at the lowest part of the heel, and that's where the insole starts to protrude -- by several inches after taking 30 or 40 steps.

So I have the following choices: (a) constantly shove the insoles back in or (b) remove them permanently and tolerate a looser fit or (c) glue the insoles in permanently

Nonetheless for the price, the comfort, and being able to take out the trash in the rain, etc. you can't complain. But you have to get lucky on the fit, as the adjustable feature really just doesn't work.

I am updating this review after a few months with a somewhat higher rating. Despite them being a loose fit, because the price is so low and because it is a unique product, I decided to keep them. It is a great convenience being able to slip them on without stooping over, and still have it not flop like a flip-flop sandal. I only wish the maker would bite the bullet and start producing half-sizes, so that all of us can have the size we were meant to have.

Hi-Rice SD-813 Portable Metal Mini Speaker With LED Diaplay / FM / Clock / Alarm Clock Dual Speaker Red
Hi-Rice SD-813 Portable Metal Mini Speaker With LED Diaplay / FM / Clock / Alarm Clock Dual Speaker Red

1.0 out of 5 stars No, it's not an alarm clock, October 29, 2013
Ordered this on Amazon, and was glad to see that it has nice sound and plays mp3's well enough. It is labeled as an "alarm clock radio" and this is clearly wrong. It has no clock at all, let alone an alarm. Since I bought it to wake up to music, this shortcoming made the purchase a waste of time.
If you just want a portable speaker, it's fairly good for the price. But there's no clock!

Jerry Murphy Quartet

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Jazz quartet with impeccable piano, September 19, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Jerry Murphy Quartet (MP3 Music)
As a jazz pianist, Jerry Murphy is as solid and as versatile as you can ask for. He can do any number of different sub-genres, on both acoustic and electric keyboard.

It's hard to compare him to anybody, though Oscar Peterson comes to mind. Though Jerry doesn't flaunt his speed as much as Oscar, the speed is there whenever he wants to call it up.

The bass, drums, and vocals are top notch. If you want a solid jazz standards disc with plenty of variety, you won't be disappointed here.

Jerry is especially strong on his creative arrangements and interesting chords -- he never sticks to the original chord progression on his covers.

This is solid Jazz from the foundation all the way up to the ornamentals. Enjoy.

Disclosure: I was lucky enough to take piano instruction from Jerry for a few years, way back when (which helped get me a full ride scholarship to Pepperdine in the Music Department -- all thanks to Jerry's help). I just recently stumbled across this album of Jerry's on Amazon and didn't know I was in for, as I actually never had heard Jerry play in a group (only solo). What a blessing. RIP Jerry.

Excellent notes and introduction help elucidate the radical ramifications of this important text. Amazing that there was never before an English translation.
