Under the Black Flag: The Romance and the Reality of Life Among the Pirates

Price: $9.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Not great, but could be better, March 26, 2015

There's tons of quality information to be had here, and you can tell the author does his best to bring the information he's gleaned from judicial summaries, shipping report, and testimonials to life. However, the tale he weaves is incredibly meandering, so that most chapters don't seem to have any real cohesive subject, and the chapters bounce back and forth so that the book as a whole doesn't move forward in any sort of logical or chronological manner. And unfortunately, whether due to the author's style or the limited research materials, the final product comes across as rather dry, and for lack of a better word, boring. Recommended for the pirate enthusiast, but don't expect to be riveted to your chair during the read.

Love Alestorm, love everything they release, and this is no exception. For a live album, the production levels are excellent. The instrumentation and vocals are all clear, and the tracks have a suitable level of crowd noise to make it feel like you're there. Since this is a live album, there's nothing new here for fans, but it's worthy of the occasional listen in-between their regular, studio albums.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Headphones, but not Worldbeaters, February 25, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought these based mainly on the review from The Wirecutter website, which tested dozens of low cost earbuds and listed these as the best, but so far, I'm reasonably disappointed with them. Don't get me wrong. The sound quality isn't bad—they beat the pants off your standard Apple EarPods or bargain basement headphones—but the quality isn't the best I've heard by any means. The highs are a bit tinny, and the bass is FAR weaker than that on my old Sennheiser CX300s. The price on these is nice, but for an extra $10 or so, the Sennheisers are better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slicker, Cleaner, but still the same old Amaranthe, November 9, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Massive Addictive (MP3 Music)
Amaranthe continues to refine their sound in this, their third release, becoming even more slick and processed than before. If that previous sentence makes you cringe, than you aren't in the market for Amaranthe's latest album, but if you're already a fan of their first two albums, you should find plenty to enjoy here. In my opinion, it's not quite up to the same level as The Nexus, but it is on par if not better than their debut. If I could I'd award the album a 4.5 out of 5, but if you're an Amaranthe fan, you can rest easy with the knowledge that this is more of the same band you know and love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yarr, Alestorm be back, me hearties!, November 8, 2014

This review is from: Back Through Time (MP3 Music)
Let me get right to the point—this is Alestorm's best work so far. Back Through Time is ferocious, melodic, and deliciously piratey. If you're a fan of Alestorm's previous work, you'll love this offering, and I can't recommend it enough. But beware! You may suffer from yarrr-heavy language syndrome and grog withdrawal if you stop listening to it for too long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to Full Force, November 8, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
After the departure of singer Christian Älvestam, Scar Symmetry stumbled a bit, putting out solid if somewhat unspectacular releases in Dark Matter Dimensions and The Unseen Empire. You could tell the talent for spectacular creations was still there, but the band hadn't fully jelled yet. Well, it appears the band has recovered from that slight stumble and is now back to running full tilt. The Singularity Phase I is excellent, mixing melodic and harsh metal elements in spectacular fashion. It's not their best work—honestly, it may be hard for them to ever replicate their success with Älvestam—but it's easily a 5 star worthy album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best effort yet, November 8, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
To me, Delain has always been something of a fourth wheel in the symphonic metal scene, lagging slightly behind the triumvirate of Within Temptation, Epica, and Nightwish. Not any more. The Human Contradiction is flawless from cover to cover (or bit to bit if you live in the digital age). Powerful vocals, soaring operatics, and excellent song composition combine to make this their best effort yet, and one of, if not the best, symphonic metal offerings of the year. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars More of the same, and it's still great., November 8, 2014

If you're a fan of Alestorm's unique brand of pirate folk metal that they've established themselves to be the leaders and best at, then you'll surely enjoy this latest album of theirs. Do they break any walls they haven't already torn down? No. Is it their best effort? In my opinion, also no. I personally enjoyed Back Through Time more. But is it a solid, entertaining album? Absolutely. Simply put, if you're an Alestorm fan, you won't be disappointed.

Price: $4.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer for Self-Publishing, October 5, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Just finished reading the revised second edition of Let's Get Digital, and I can say that it's an excellent introductory primer on exactly what the title says: how to self-publish and why you should. It covers the why in greater detail than the how, but the how is covered in great enough detail that someone who's looking to self-publish will know where to start after reading this. There's not much information here that someone who's been following self-publishing won't already know, or pearls of wisdom or magical bullets that will make your self-publishing experience stand out, but there's lots of good, common sense advice and tips to be had.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to discoverability and visibility for indie publishers, October 3, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is an excellent guide to discoverability and visibility for indie and self published authors in the brave new world of digital publishing. I consider myself pretty well up to date on the trends and topics du jour in indie publishing, but there was still a fair amount of good, new advice to be had for me here. With that said, the book won't provide you with any miracle solutions to sell more books - just good, quality advice about how to approach sales in the most sensible way possible.
