Crucial Conversations ...in 30 Minutes - The Expert Guide to Kerry Patterson's Critically Acclaimed Book (The 30 Minute Expert Series)
Crucial Conversations ...in 30 Minutes - The Expert Guide to Kerry Patterson's Critically Acclaimed Book (The 30 Minute Expert Series)

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-Read for That Conversation, June 14, 2013

The layout of this book is great: you get a fully comprehensive view of the original, including explanation about the authors' backgrounds and even reader responses. It's a great way to condense the original--clear and concise. It's easy to read and boils down the essential points of each chapter. Teaching people how to approach difficult conversations is a great idea, especially since most of these conversations come with a high emotional charge. The book's advice about "starting with the heart" and then stating the facts makes a lot of sense, as does moving the conversation through so a decision gets made. It expounds the importance of having a healthy dialogue and looking for nonverbal clues to the other person's emotional state. There are also examples of different scenarios and what should be done. I think this book is a great way to condense the original, and would be good advice to take for anyone who is dreading an approaching crucial conversation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just a Fad Diet, January 17, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a diet that isn't just a fad--the book talks about making real lifestyle changes. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. The program is based on studies conducted by some of the most respected medical research institutions in the country, including Johns Hopkins University and Duke University Medical Center. The DASH diet effectively lowers sodium, making hearts healthier and lowering high blood pressure, but also takes into consideration the amount of sodium the dieter is used to. This is great because you don't feel like you are suddenly on a crash diet: there are two tiers of sodium intake you can choose. The other thing I really like about this diet is that it is more about a lifestyle change: it reduces sodium, increases fiber, and greatly reduces trans fats and saturated fats. It also recognizes the psychological struggles of dieting and has great recommendations for the transition between eating plans. There are fantastic charts with specific breakdowns of each food and food group to guide you through your menu planning, and a super helpful grocery shopping list to guide you through the store. Combined with a menu plan and a workout plan, this book lays out a totally sustainable life change for anyone looking to get healthier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Version, A Fraction of the Time, December 18, 2012

This book is a great dilution of the original for any parent, educator, or childcare professional with questions about education, cognitive ability, and character-building. Though it is a lot of information packed into a short read, it's easy to understand and states each case clearly per chapter. The summaries after each chapter are very helpful--it's like having study notes for each section you read.
I found all the cognitive correlations interesting--for instance, just because you have a high IQ doesn't mean you do well in school, and that the reason lots of low-income children do poorly in school is because of the stress of living in poverty. Also the importance of character-building in children was fascinating, from the chess programs for inner city kids to the privileged private-school students. It makes complete sense that to be a successful adult you have to be able to deal with challenges (i.e., failure). I found it fascinating that privileged, private-school students tend to seek "safer" jobs rather than becoming entrepreneurs, etc. This book has great insights, and I would highly recommend it for someone constantly "on the go" who may not have time to read through the non-condensed version.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Juicing Beginners, November 28, 2012

This book makes a great case for juicing, bringing it out of the trendy diet category and explaining how juicing can become a lifestyle choice. I didn't know there was such a huge difference between smoothies and juices, and the book does a good job of explaining which option would be right for which people. It's super easy to read and breaks down all aspects of juicing in a pretty linear format, starting with an explanation of Green Juicing and moving through a fruit and veggie overview and equipment needs. I found the equipment breakdowns very helpful--I definitely couldn't afford the top-shelf $2,500 juicer, but they offer lots of advice comparing how the machines work with their price point. The information on cleansing was really helpful too--I would not have known to mix my juice with water the first couple of days to avoid feeling sick. They also offer a ton of recipes to get you started, although still say once you're comfortable you can mix and match to find your favorite flavors. Overall, this was very easy to read and informative about juicing and juice cleansing.
