5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, but not cold, July 28, 2012
This review is from: The Harvest (Paperback)
Something always seems to temper Holt's rather bleak landscapes in The Harvest: so that after he's taken you through failed marriages told from several points of view, a friend's betrayal, an avuncular pedophile, a stalker, a psychiatric facility filled with troubled, neglected children, and a mass murder, among other circles of modern hell, he'll leave you feeling lucky to have come across this book.

"The Stalker's Villanelle," the chilling account of a man who's about to kill his former wife, has already won critical acclaim and is probably going to enjoy a long life in the anthologies. Of the sonnets, of which there are more than a dozen, there are a number of standouts including "Take Me," the heart-rending but clear-eyed account of a social worker's visit with troubled boys, and "Our Murder," about the details and "sensible absurdities" of divorce, which begins, "The deadliest smile that ever scaled a face", and ends: "Our talking now is just a hollow show; / We murdered conversation weeks ago."

There is light verse here as well and Holt is sometimes very funny, most of all when he's making fun of himself, as in "Godot Revisited." But it's the surgical strikes he performs on himself and others you'll remember longest, I suspect. I bought this book twice because it got soaked in my backpack during a storm, and I knew I'd want it around to dip into now and then. It's dark, yes, but not cold. A fine book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware -- only 1 disc of 2 disc set, November 26, 2011

This review is from: The Kink Kronikles (Audio CD)
I love the Kinks, and would give this a 5 star rating for the CD itself, had I received what I ordered, but the advertising on Amazon.com is deceptive: when I ordered "The Kink Kronikles" the image announced it was "a specially-priced 2 disc set", but what I actually got was only disc 2 of that set. Grrr.

1.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE -- This software is NOT compatible with Mac, May 19, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I downloaded 4000 Fonts because it was listed under 'Mac platform,' and the 'Systems Requirments' section says: 'Mac'. However, under 'See more systems requirements,' you find that the program is compatible with ' Windows® 2000, Windows® XP, Windows® Vista, Windows® 7.'

I learned of this after I tried to install the program, and got the following message: 'Cannot be run in DOS mode.'

I feel that Amazon.com is misleading consumers into buying and downloading a program that cannot run in Mac. BEWARE. Don't waste your money.

4.0 out of 5 stars wonderful, but..., March 16, 2010
This review is from: Fado: Exquisite Passion (Audio CD)
Here, the songs are exquisite and passionate, as advertised. The CD itself, however, is not very adventurous.

First, there are just 4 fadistas featured in the 13 selections. Among those left out, in no particular order, just among modern singers: Dulce Pontes, Joana Amendoeira, Margarida Guerreiro, Anabela, Ana Sofia Varela, Ana Lains, Misia, Katia Guerreiro, etc. The list of intriguing, admirable artists from Portugal goes on and on.

Second -- this is strictly a personal opinion -- often the songs do not represent the best that these singers have to offer.

You won't go very wrong with "Exquisite Passion," but if you're at all familiar with fado, you've probably heard most of the songs on this collection. If you're a newcomer, I think I'd shop around a while before choosing this CD to start out with.

4.0 out of 5 stars rare and fine, but. . ., April 2, 2006

You'll get everything you'd wish for and more from a CD that features two such great artists, except for clean sound to go along with the fine singing and playing. On a well-worn, well-loved vinyl album, maybe one wouldn't notice the muted snap, crackles and pops so much, but it's odd for a recording made in 2001. Thrilling in parts, "A Winter Talisman" is still worth buying, but I'll buy it again if it ever gets remastered with the care that it deserves.
