This is a handy device that cuts drum over- ring without killing it completely. I mainly use it my snare drum, because that's the only drum that needs a bit of muffling in certain situations. But I've tried it on a 14" floor tom a couple of times, and it worked great.

This thing will not give you a dead "studio" sound, which I don't like anyway. It does not kill the fundamental note of the drum; it just dampens the over-ring. I could see using 2 of them if you want a deader sound.

It comes on and off the hoop quick and easy, and it comes with a stick-on felt patch so the rubber won't mar the drum head. Nice invention!

Since drum makers have quit installing internal tone controls, this is the way to go.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of his best stand alone books, April 26, 2015

Pronzini's Nameless mysteries get the most critical and popular attention, and rightfully so, but his stand alone novels are deeper explorations of human neuroses and psychoses. This is one of his best stand alone books, involving revenge and childhood trauma. The suspense is steady and ever-increasing, and since the characters are so well-drawn, we care about them and their fates.

Pronzini's style is unique. He hardly ever begins a sentence with an article like "the" or "a," giving his prose a conversational quality.

This book ranks with The Crimes of Jordan Wise in terms of suspense and momentum. It's a compulsive read, which I think has always been Pronzini's intent. He wants to "hook" the readers and keep them reading. You'll have have a hard time putting it down until the surprising climax.

Pronzini has a long and prolific history as a writer. He's a must-read for aficionados of noir fiction.

I'm looking forward to the new Nameless novel, Vixen, which is coming out this summer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice long rise for taller guys, April 19, 2015
I'm 6'5", and I almost always have to buy "tall" size shorts, not just for the longer inseam, but also for the longer rise (between crotch and waist).

I tried on a pair of these shorts (regular size) in a store a few years ago, and to my surprise, the rise was long enough and the waist was high enough. The inseam was maybe a tad short, no big deal with shorts. They have lasted through scores of washings and are are still in great shape.

I'm getting ready to buy a couple more pairs. I hope they haven't changed their design!

Skink--No Surrender
Skink--No Surrender

Edition: Hardcover
Price: $12.49

4.0 out of 5 stars Profound themes---for readers of any age, April 18, 2015
This review is from: Skink--No Surrender (Hardcover)
In recent years, Hiaasen has been concentrating less on his typical dark humor stuff and more on novels for younger readers (In case anyone thinks he's lost his fire, don't despair; read _Dance of the Reptiles_, the latest collection of his _Miami Herald_ columns. He still kicks ass just as hard as ever).
Hiaasen is a parent himself. and I think it's commendable that he's writing for young readers, especially since he never fails to inform them about the ongoing environmental desecration of our beloved state. He's planting very important seeds in these books. The first scene in _Skink_ involves a sea turtle nest, which is federally protected, yet poachers always find ways to steal the eggs and sell them. Later in the story, Skink follows a driver who has thrown a beer can out of his window, and when the driver goes into a bar, Skink fills his gas tank with beer and stuffs the empty cans up his tailpipe. This is the Skink Hiaasen readers have always known and loved.

Aside from the environmental themes, there is a plot about a missing girl, the cousin of the teenaged narrator, Richard, who is not a bad role model for young readers. Unlike a lot of kids his age, he actually has a moral code. And of course, it's gratifying to again read about Skink, Hiaasen's greatest character. He helps Richard find his missing cousin Malley, who has run off with an Internet impostor.

Adult readers should not dismiss this book. It's a great, fun read with important themes. It's a National Book Award Longlist Selection, and for good reason.

I have chronic sinusitis due to allergies. I take an antihistamine daily (Allegra), but that has a drying effect, so the mucous in my sinuses gets dried up like glue.
Sinus Buster blasts my sinuses open and immediately starts drainage. I'm running for a Kleenex as soon as I use it. This is a good thing!

I have found that I need to use it at least twice a day, three times on a bad day. And it doesn't have the "rebound" effect like over the counter decongestant sprays.

It burns like a son of a gun for about 3-4 seconds, but after that, blessed relief.

The main ingredient, Capsacian, comes from hot peppers. It's the same stuff used in pepper spray. You would think it would burn your sinus tissues, but it's a low dosage, and it doesn't do any damage to me. Some people may be sensitive to it.

Capsacian also has anti-inflammatory properties, so it helps people with migraines, too.

I love this stuff! Too bad it's so expensive!

For those who don't know about the legendary Eddie Jefferson, this would be a good place to start. The Slide Hampton arrangements are gorgeous, the band is stellar, and Eddie is in top form. This man was simply one of a kind. Only the hippest of the hip know about him! He was jazz personified.

As much as I admire the Rhodenbarr series, this particular book has an especially convoluted plot and countless characters--so much so that the final "drawing room" scene in which Bernie "solves" the mystery goes on forever. There are so many loose ends to tie up, I lost track of them all.
I recommend that people who are being introduced to this series not start with this one.
Still, if you're a fan of Bernie, you'll enjoy the book. You'll just have to pay attention more than usual.

Interesting backstory stuff for Spenser fans. The book doesn't have plot per se, but plenty of conflict--and a chance to see how Spencer developed his code of ethics. I'm subtracting one star for the intermittent scenes on the bench, where the adult Spencer is telling the always-annoying Susan about his childhood. She is the one puzzling anomaly in the Spenser books. How many times do we have to hear about her Harvard degree? How about none?

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for Eddie Jefferson fans, March 16, 2015

Considering Eddie Jefferson's long career and his stellar reputation in the world of jazz, it's surprising that there is not more video of him performing. Well...maybe not so surprising. Jazz singers can sometimes appeal to mass audiences, but Jefferson was so hip and so "inside," it was perhaps impossible for him to reach the masses. After all, how can you appreciate what he did if you aren't already familiar with the classic jazz solos he sang?
This video is a gem, in spite of the late 70's video quality. The sound, however, is pretty good. Jefferson belts out a set of his great hits, with a young Richie Cole burning right alongside. Jefferson lets the band open with Duke Pearson's "Jeanine," with Cole blowing an ebullient solo, then the main man walks on and takes the mike. It's apparent that Jefferson was looser and more improvisational in live performance. Occasionally, he forgoes some of the lyrics and scats instead. Nobody could scat like Jefferson. The set includes memorable versions of "So What" and "Night in Tunisia.," as well as a breakneck tempo "When You're Smiling" that showcases the band.
It's very moving to watch this video and remember the tragic circumstances of Jefferson's death, only two days after this show. An incredible artistic genius who added so much to the world of jazz.

This is a 1975 Pronzini stand-alone, every bit as good as his other non-series books. The streets of Singapore and the jungle of the Malay peninsula play an integral part in this story about an ex-smuggler pilot who is trying to go straight, but he gets framed by some unsavory types on a steamer ship. The characters are well-drawn and intriguing. Pronzini keeps you captivated throughout, and he never ceases to pay off in the end. The man is amazing.
