5.0 out of 5 stars Retron 5 hardware revisions finally make this a great retro console, July 20, 2015
I was an early adopter of the Retron-5 and I had a lot of fun with it but if you've read other reviews, it was no secret that there were some glaring hardware issues. Cartridges requiring tons of force getting in/out of their slots, flimsy design, read errors, wonky wireless controls, etc. I didn't run into too many problems with the earlier model except for one NES game not working at all (Dragon Warrior*, more on that later at the end) and a few NES carts needing inserted/taken out several times until the console recognized the cart. My Genesis/Mega Drive port was fine, I didn't have the "death grip" issues anywhere near as bad as lots of other reviews made it out to be. Hyperkin even released a video on youtube on how to minimize the "death grip", I don't see how it was too much of an issue other than trying to find a reason to complain about something.

Sadly, I accidentally fried my unit when I plugged it into the wrong AC adapter. This is why I bought a new one.

Sometime last winter, a software update announced that there was going to be a hardware update. I decided to wait a few months for that to take effect before buying another Retron 5.There's nothing on the box stating that you're getting the new version of the unit until you open it up and notice the immediate changes to the design of the unit. Below is a short list of immediate things I've noticed.

1.) Plastic between console bays are rigid, no longer wobbly and cheap feeling.THANK GOD, it always bothered me to no-end that my finger would go right through the console when I'm trying to get leverage to take a cart out.

2.) There's no silicon covers over the controller ports. Really don't do much, but it's a nice touch.

3.) Carts for the most part slide right in an out of the unit with ease.No more crunchy sound. Also, console feels more stable and carts are less wobbly. NES cart bay still elave a little too much room and car can wobble a little bit if you're messing around too much.

4.) cart bay doors are WAY MORE rigid, not as floppy as before. Better springs I guess. That'll keep the dust out of the unit for sure.

5.) Unit turns on and boot up sequence is much faster.

6.) controller hasn't changed but response/syncing is a tad faster.

7.) GBA/GB slot looks bigger but I'm not sure, I'll have to look at it side by side when I get a change. The one problem I had with the GB/GBA port was that it never felt like the game was secured into the console. Hopefully they changed that as well.

8.) SD card port much more secure. SD card port was way too flimsy last time, you never knew it was entirely inserted.

Hope this review helps. All the changes Hyperkin made for the Retron 5 were for the better plus the unit is back down in the $130 range, like how it was supposed to be. Recommend this to anyone that wants to play retro games with a cart and with the simplicity of an HDMI cable.

*Dragon Warrior didn't work for me, even after cleaning the cart and buying a second Dragon Warrior. The problem with Dragon Warrior and a few other select NES games is that if you look at the bottom of the cart, you'll notice that the connectors stop about a quarter inch from the end of the board. This wasn't an issue with the original NES, the connectors that held in the cart were long, having no problem reaching all the way up into the cart. With the Retron 5, the 72-pin connectors in the console are slightly shorter, making games like Dragon Warrior and a few others hard, if not impossible to play. I've only gotten Dragon Warrior to work once and that's after trying about 150 times. I initially had some issues with Ducktales as well, that cart has a similar short connector issue but not as extreme as Dragon Warrior. I've tried Dragon Warrior on the new and improved Retron 5 and I still have issues but instead of the Retron 5 not even recognizing that there's a cart in the slot, it just informs me that there was a Rom dump error. This could mean that the cart is dirty, I'll update this review if that's the case. A possible dirty cart doesn't negate the fact that the Retron will have read issues with NES carts with short connectors. This sounds bad but it's really not a major issue, we're talking 4-6 games that were mass produced like this.

If you're into kinky erotica, this is alright. Not great, but ok. The Distorted View podcast has way more messed up erotic fiction every Tuesday (Sextastic Tuesday). Want to hear about a guy get rammed by a cheerios monster? A Woman get it on with garbage maggots? Transformers Porn? Head on over to the Distorted View podcast. Distortedview.com for more info.

No, I don't work for the podcast. Just a fan and thought anyone that would find a book like this an interesting read, would find this podcast quite entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be careful, this government thing goes all the way up to the President!, October 18, 2012
I've read "tell all" books about the expoits of the rich and powerful, but I've never read THIS! It's explosive, throbbing, no-holds-barred tale of the sexual conquests of Mitt Romney (Romnbo by the ladies). This Mormonesque tale of seduction and intrigue will keep you wanting more, and more, and more, and more.

As a side, I didn't know Mitt Romney watches Steve Guttenberg movies to get hard. The more you know.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great price for the content inside, December 23, 2009
I love Mel Brooks. When I heard he's having a collection coming out on Blu Ray, I was excited.

If you're a Mel Brooks fan, this is a no brainer. Now for the dissappointing aspects.

This box set WILL NOT fit on your DVD rack without there being some major changes to the layout of your entertainment center. The Blu Ray/book/jacket/thing is roughly the same size as a hard bound coffee table book. It's clunky and it falls apart easily (the binding agents "glue" was weak on my copy. To top it off, you're sliding Blu Ray discs up against straight up card stock inserts to get them out. It's more of an annoyance than anything, but if you can see through that, you're set.

You'll also notice that there's some movies missing. I'm not saying that Dracula: Dead and loving it should be wiped clean from human memory, but it's the completitionist in me that would like to see all his works in something named "Collection". It's really not a collection, isn't it. More like a "greatest hits", or "The ones we want you to remember him by". I was somewhat suprised that The Producers wasn't in this collection either. Was that 10th or 11th movie going to disrupt the balance of the box set and set the world ablaze? probably not, I'm guessing it was those two timing Hollywood lawyers that kept my dream from becoming a reality.

Long story short, Terri Garr was insanely hot and everybody knows that Druish princesses are attacted to money and power, and Darth Helmet has both.

When Men Grew Tall: Or The Story Of Andrew Jackson
When Men Grew Tall: Or The Story Of Andrew Jackson
by Alfred Henry Lewis
Edition: Hardcover
Price: $48.95
12 used & new from $24.95

5.0 out of 5 stars I have a first edition, May 27, 2008
this book is 101 years old. To me, it's probably the most accurate portrail of a president. The memories of this president were still fresh in the authors mind when he wrote this. Alfred Henry lewis was also known for hit but of muck raking back in the day also. A great read if you can make it through the slightly difficult late 19th century vernacular.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saw these guys open for the Bravery in Toledo, April 23, 2008

This review is from: A Town And Two Cities (MP3 Music)
They're great guys. The bands music reminded me of Sam's Town from the Killers. After the show I met up with the drummer to talk shop. He uses Zildjian Avedis MASTER SOUNDS 14 inch high hats and cymbals... good to know.

I'll be picking this cd up (he told me the band gets more money if you buy the CD at the store than here on amazon) when I pick up GTA IV on the 29th.

Again, if you like the Bravery and/or the Killers, this is a real up and coming act.
