5.0 out of 5 stars Things aren't always as they seem......, September 7, 2005
This review is from: The Upside of Anger (DVD)
"The Upside of Anger" is a pleasant surprise. One would think that a movie about a middle aged woman, bitter and boozed up up over the sudden disappearance of her cheating husband; and doing her best to raise her 4 adult daughters would scream "chick flick" and make for 2hrs of terribly unfunny male bashing.

Instead.. what we get is a remarkably honest and relate able performance by Joan Allen. Her Terry Wolfmeyer is quite a character indeed. Terry is mad. MAD, MAD, MAD! After her hubby all but abandons her and her family, Terry whiles away the days watching TV with a smoke in one hand and a drink in the other. She's sarcastic to everyone she comes in contact with and is pretty much fed up with the suburban "American Dream".

Enter neighbor Denny Davies, a ex baseball playing, pot smoking, beer guzzling radio talk show host - who after hearing about Terry's predicament- decides to become her new neighborly drinking buddy. He doesn't seem to mind Terry's moodiness and although she initially pushes him away- she tends to grow fond of his company.

Of course, the two grow closer and closer until you can only guess what's developing....but the movie ends with a slight twist that this reviewer was not to particularly fond with.

Ending aside however, the "Upside of Anger" is quite an entertaining and well acted piece of work. Having never, never, NEVER, been a Kevin Costner fan- this reviewer was immediately taken with his performance of Denny Davies. Costner shines in his supporting role fantastically. This is definitely some of his best work in years, if not ever. His strong presence helps "The Upside of Anger" become a movie that all audiences can thoroughly enjoy.

There's a lot more to "The Upside of Anger" than what I've just mentioned above. Interesting sub plots with Terry's daughters and one of Denny's co-workers helps the film come full circle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!, September 6, 2005
This review is from: Being Ron Jeremy (DVD)
If you like your humor rude, crude, well scripted and outrageous....then look no further. This is a very funny movie indeed.

Think "Being John Malkovich"- but instead of John you've got Ron - and a bunch of horny guys climbing through his portal and into his body to get a taste of what it's like to be one of the most recognized faces the porn industry has ever seen.

That is...until he farts at least.

It sounds trashy- but this is actually a very comical short film. Oh yeah, it's completely tasteless as well. ;-)

Well acted and written, "Being Ron Jeremy" is worth a vieiwing for sure.

A great little movie to watch with your friends - it also boasts some darn good extras as well.....

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh the humanity!!, September 6, 2005
This movie is beyond dumb. Someone would really have to be highly impaired & below average intelligence to find "Monster In Law" anything but badly acted, very boring, and horrifically unbelievable! This movie Sucks with a capitol S.

This reviewer can not figure out for the life of him WHY movies like this get made or do not get shelved before being released. Straight to Video/DVD is even to good for "Monster In Law".

There is NOTHING believable about "Monster-in-Law". From Jennifer Lopez's dog walking, temp working, sometimes artist sometime caterer character named Charlie meeting Dr. Kevin Fields (Michael Vartan), a handsome and successful surgeon who so completely clueless that his mother is an absolute nut case that he finds it romantic to propose right in front of her as soon as she leaves the loony bin.

And then there's Jane Fondas Viola, a character so unimaginable that it is beyond comprehension. An award winning reporter and talk show host who is so outrageous that she can not control her temper for 2 minutes; going into rages every half second, she flies in and out of a mental hospital upon cancellation of her show, and makes it her life purpose to destroy her sons engagement at all costs . This is the worst thing Jane Fonda could have ever done if she wanted to try and revive her career.

There was one funny scene in "Monster -In- Law and it lasts about 2 seconds. Fonda is sleeping next to Lopez in bed when she starts swinging and attacking Lopez in her sleep. After a few good whacks she pulls Lopez close and cuddles with her for the rest of the night; leaving Lopez trembling and shaking. I particularly enjoyed this because let's face it....who doesn't want to take a swing at J.LO?? Other than that- this film is a total waste of money, talent(Fonda), and time.

It really shows how unintelligent the American public can be when people start to find this tripe funny.

This isn't funny America.... its retarded! I was ready to fly into a Jane Fonda rage and beat the crap out of this DVD when it was over with. This is one of those movies I got suckered into watching with my fiancé'--and she owes me big time after putting me through the torture that is "Monster-In-Law"

Seriously folks....YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! HORRIBLE!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars House arrest....., September 2, 2005
This review is from: Dead Birds (DVD)
Dead Birds is a decent supernatural flick. Part horror, western, & ghost story, "Dead Birds" follows the pursuit of 6 bank robbers who after stealing their loot, decide to take refuge in an abandon farm house on their way to Mexico.

What they soon come to realize is that the house is cursed, and that they are being stalked and attacked from the evil spirits within. As they fight to remain intact as a group, they slowly come to realize the horrific mystery that the house holds. Good performances all the way around help this solid scipt succeed.

A little sluggish at times (but necessary to build suspense) , Dead Birds proves to be unique in creating a different sort of atmosphere for its chilling tail of a house possesed.

The ending is pretty cool too. Not the best movie, but certainly worth a look for fans of the genre.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the typical girl next door....., August 31, 2005
This movie is mindless fun. It's not as good as your "American Pie" or early 80's sex comedies (i.e. Porky's, Last American Virigin), but it does have a little bit of heart to go with all the overblown fluff.

Matthew Kidman (Emile Hirsch) is just your everyday average nerdy senior- whose never even gotten close to getting laid. He's terribly envious of all the popular kids in school who seem to be having the time of their lives. Howver, he's so out of their league that he really is quite pathetic.

Enter Danielle (Elisha Cuthbert) the new girl next door. After Mathew lamely busts himself by getting caught watching Danielle change by the window, and a quick act of revenge by Danielle, the two become friends.

Mathew is too much of a wimp to make a move on Danielle, but she eventually eases him out of his shell more and more each day. When at a party and one of the jocks begins hitting on Danielle, Matt finally makes his move and kisses Danielle.

Looks like the kid has some balls after all! Good job Matt.

Matt eventually finds out that Danielle is a washed up porn star, and she has moved in next door to start a new life as a clean and wholesome girl. That is until her ex boyfriend and manager Kelly (Timothy Olyphant)strolls into town to haul her off to the annual Las Vegas porn connection.

After Matt blows Danielles cover and makes her feel like the tramp she once was, she decides to high tail it with Kelly. Matt is completely whipped over her by this point and begs her not to go -but alas, she bails anyways.

Matts balls have gotten pretty big by now, and he takes off to rescue her from the clutches of her evil pimp. Eventually after Danielle returns home- Kelly comes back with a vengeance for Matt - causing him to lose the school funding he has been working on to bring a foreign exchange student to his school. He also manages to slip him some Ecstatsy - on the very night he has to give a speech in an attempt to gain the scholarship to college that he has worked so hard for.

Nerds and porn stars eventually come together to hatch a plan to raise the money once again - this time by making their own porno right at their very own school.

"The Girl Next Door" is the kind of movie I would have enjoyed a lot more as a teenager than as an adult. Now grown up- you realize how far from reality this kind of stuff is--but as a kid- this would have been a fantasy flick that I would have killed to see come true in my own life.

Overall stupid but enjoyable.

Recommended for all you nerdy/horny teens with big dreams and not much else.......

4.0 out of 5 stars Strings you along nicely......, August 31, 2005
This review is from: Strings (DVD)
"Strings" is quite a unique and intersting movie going experience. This just happens to be one of those movies I had never heard of before that I ran across doing research, and decided to give it a shot. My biggest problem with "Strings" is that the puppets do not move their mouths, which made it a little hard to follow the dialogue as it switched back and forth between characters. Once your able to get past that - this is really a beautiful little film.

A little over-dramatic but with some pretty high production values, "Strings" is unlike no movie you have seen before.
The cinematography, voice overs, and set designs are well done and very pleasing to watch and to listen to all throughout.

One thing I enjoyed about "Strings" was the how the actual strings were incorporated in the movie. There is no effort to hide them. In fact, the strings themselves are part of each characters actual being, reaching all the way up in to the sky with the "head" string being the strongest and most valuable. Cut the head string, and your dead! Get a little to playful, and you might get tangled and need some help getting undone! Interesting little concept.

Strings is a fantasy story about a King who commits suicide, leaving the throne to his son. When his son is lead to believe by his evil uncle that some outside rebels are responsible for his death, he seeks out to find them and avenge his father. In the process he goes on a magical journey, learning about life, love, war, and the fact that people and things aren't always quite what they seem.

"Strings" is a film that stands on its own two feet- apart from anything else out there. All in all, it's a very impressive piece of work- and a good family oriented film.

5.0 out of 5 stars T.K.O. !!, August 31, 2005
"Million dollar baby" is a complete winner of a film. This is actually an Oscar recepient that is hard to dispute. Knockout performances from Freeman, Eastwood, and especially Swank. It's really hard not to be moved by this film once it has been seen in its entirety.

"Million Dollar Baby" is laced with just the right amount of honesty, comedy, integrity, action, drama, and tragedy. It really is a beautiful piece of work that should equally appeal to both sexes and audiences of every age. This film definitely has it all.

"Million Dollar Baby" is a movie that is not worth describing the plot for, as it really must be seen to be appreciated and respected. Swank and especially Eastwood should be proud of what they have given us. A crowning acheivement for two outstanding performers.

If you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favor and make it the next movie on your list. "Million Dollar Baby" is without a doubt a landmark film and and a new American classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Seek it out...., August 30, 2005
"Hide and Seek" is an above averave thriller that deserves to be seen. This reviewer certainly felt that as far as "thrillers" go, this was one of the better ones that have been unleashed upon the masses in a while.

Ahhh... life was all too good for little Emily Callaway (Dakota Fanning) until mommy slit her wrists in the bathtub. Now, what was once a happy go lucky little girl has become an extremely introverted little nut case. She has no friends her own age, barely says a word, and can stare you down with one look of her bulgin baby blues.

Of course, Daddy (David) Calloway (Robert De Niro) aint doin so hot either. He has lost his wife and he's losing his daughter a little more each day; so he packs up and heads upstate.... hoping that change will help his daughter "heal".

However, once they move in to the new house, little Emily starts getting kookier by the moment. She shuns Davids attempts to find her new friends, begins closing herself off even more, and develops a new "imaginary" friend named Charlie; who seems to have vengeful motives of his own. The further Charlie's influence begins to affect little Emily, the stranger and stranger things get for poor David. Of course, it all leads to the climactic showdown--which is done in typical thriller fashion.

This reviewer enjoyed "Hide and Seek". I have read plenty of reviews that state that this movie was a waste of Deniros and Fannings talent. Thats a real crock of B.S. if you ask me. Deniro and Fanning both turn in subtle then chilling performances. Fanning elicits childlike fear with a cool precision.....and Deniro...well.....Deniro is Deniro and thats good enough for me! They are both very talented and do what they need to make the movie work..

Nice supporting roles from Famke Janssen (Dr. Jean Gray from X-men) and Elizabeth Shue help flesh out the storyline nicely.

The very -very- very- end of the movie is kind of hokey but the other 98% of the film delivers just what a thriller should. The script is sharp, and not as predicatble as previous reviews claim.

The film puts a nice little spin on a subject that has been played out before--so while "Hide and Seek" is not entirely original, it is without a doubt thoroughly entertaining and watchable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Insightful!, August 30, 2005
Having always been fascinated with the adult film industry and the people not only in front but also behind the cameras; I must say that this is a pretty good film.

Lots of different interviews with people like Randy West and Nina Hartley, who have been around and working since the early 80's (at least!); as well as a lot of other interviews with the newer up and comers.

"The Secret Lives of Adult Stars" covers a wide range of topics and touches a lot of bases. Everything from views on penis size, AIDS, condoms, strippers turned porn goddesses, the role of the men, directors, couples in the biz, stalkers, fans... you name it...and there is probably a section of the documentary that deals with the subject.

If you interested in seeing lots & lots of interviews by some of the industries leading names.... and the subject matter & behind the scenes knowledge is something that interests you, then this reviewer would strongly suggest checking this movie out.

Just keep in mind...this IS a documentary - not a porno.

2.0 out of 5 stars Grimm indeed......, August 30, 2005
I wasn't to impressed by "The Brothers Grimm". As a whole, this was not an entertaining movie for me.

The film certainly has an interesting concept: The Brothers Grimm (Matt Damon & Heath Ledger) are con-artists who go from town to town exorcising witches and demons and such from the local townsfolk. When they are recruited by a constable who forces them to battle the haunted forest of Marbaden to rescue several missing children (i.e. Gretyl, Little Red Riding Hood) they have no choice but to accept or be punished.

The performances by Damon and Ledger are good, and the cinematogrphy is nice "eye candy" throughout the picture. The movie looks decent, but then it turns into crap less than halfway through.

Clumsy direction, a weak script, faulty editing, & bad French accents, turn "The Brothers Grim" into a mess of a movie.

Besides a few short but fleeeting comedic lines, the "Brothers Grimm" was a real disppointment; and as far as summer films go, this was a total let down. You would think that after delaying the release of the film for a year (a clear sign of trouble) , they could have put something better together.

Many people applauded in the theater after the movie had ended. I am not sure if they were applauding beause they liked the movie or they were just glad to see it finally come to an end.

In the case of this reviewer, I'd definitely have to go with the latter of the two.
