5.0 out of 5 stars Chronicler of an era, July 11, 2014
Bought at Doug's speaking engagement at the Computer History Museum which also held a large-print exhibition of selected photos from this book. Beautiful printing, compelling images, exceptional timing (especially for the bug-eyed reaction shot), a very fortunate man to have been granted such access. A wonderful chronicle of a time I witnessed almost in my back yard. My big takeaway from his talk was that many in today's high-tech are looking for a quick payday and don't have the same passion for shepherding their product for the long-term that those depicted did. Every generation stands on the shoulders of giants; these guys and gals knew and admired those who came before them (Moore and the rest of the Traitorous Eight, Packard, Hewlett, et al)…today's leaders would be wise to learn.

A stellar cast and crew. Excellent camera work and a number of creepy sets. I've not read the book from which this film is based so can't comment on the transition, but a few things mystify me: Why does "mystery woman" ask Glenn Ford's FBI agent character out? From nervousness? That came out of left field. Speaking of left field, love the tension of the heroine waiting through the Giants-Dodgers game. Last mystifying item: Why does someone with asthma run so well and not carry a portable inhaler? Wonderful, wonderful snapshot in time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect companion!, January 9, 2014

The Apple product decision-makers are following in Steve's footsteps in weaning users off aging technology. Be that as it may, I've got a huge media library and it's not going away soon; not to mention the need to burn masters for video production or whatnot. When transitioning to a new system without optical media readers/writers I had to get an external drive, and I chose this over the Apple-branded one. It's been working great for several months now, both as a reader and burner of CDs and DVDs. Only during one burn did I need to plug in the second USB for that added burst of juice; otherwise, the main USB connector has been sufficient. Sleek unobtrusive styling, too; and a great value.

Long ago, in 2006, a local dance station was my savior during a horrid temp assignment. One of the songs in their heavy rotation at the time was Jason Nevins Electrochill Remix of this track, which was unavailable via normal MP3 purchase channels, and I despaired of ever finding it…and then I found this CD! The other versions of the track are fine, but this is the one I listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars No sour grapes here, a story that needed to be told, January 9, 2014

I'm sure that some Steve acolytes will look askance upon Miss Brennan's tome. Her long-time association with Jobs provides valuable insights and influences that other biographers may not have even been aware of, and her fluid writing style is a joy to read. Do I agree with everything she says? No, but I appreciate her journey and her willingness to share it with us. She did a great job raising Lisa and carving her own place in the world. FYI: I read this not long after reading the Isaacson bio and believe they're very complementary.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last!, January 9, 2014

Finally, Mr. Smith has completed his long-awaited companion to Vol 1 "the early years" and not a moment too soon. Although much has already been written and spoken about the long-lost S.F. treasure that was Playland, Smith's historical research, deft editing of available photos (some I'd never seen before), and his own writing breathes new life into the long-vanished and provides a concise timeline for Playland as a whole as well as individual rides and attractions. Highly recommended for San Franciscans afflicted with a terminal case of nostalgia. Thank you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Took me in unexpected directions, January 9, 2014

As I've been a big fan of Gary Kamiya's columns on sfgate.com, I figured this would be a slam-dunk. Although I did enjoy the book, it was a far more challenging read than I had anticipated, but provided many new insights into both old familiar S.F. haunts as well as places I had never heard of. I am inspired to replicate a few of his hikes this year.
