5.0 out of 5 stars Snow Patrol Deluxe, May 17, 2006
This review is from: Eyes Open (Audio CD)
(Sigh) I gotta tell ya, this album is moving, uplifting, joyous, melancholy, spiritual, all at once. Eyes Open is a direct evolution from the choppy beauty that was Final Straw. Snow Patrol have coalesced their lush arrangements into power pop a la Weezer ("Hands Open" "You're All I Have" "It's Beginning to Get to Me" "Headlights on Dark Roads"), piano-guitar power ballads a la Coldplay ("Chasing Cars" "Make This Go On Forever") , and the arena anthem "Open Your Eyes" that takes its chord progression almost directly from "Where the Streets Have No Name" by U2. I actually have no problem with bands wearing their influences on their sleeves if they can pull off a wonderful sound, and that's what Snow Patrol does. Their melodies and arrangements stand up to anything on "X and Y", and the production by Jacknife Lee is mesmerizing. HIs Work with U2 on "Atomic Bomb" shows on this record, as well. The song that defines this album, however, is "Set the Fire to the Third Bar" a haunting duet with Martha Wainwright that evokes the spirit of "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. This is well worth repeated listening, as the album does grow on you.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW WOW WOW WOW, February 11, 2006
This review is from: Hot Fuss (Audio CD)
Out of left field comes the Vegas gang the Killers, with an awesome debut, Hot Fuss, which channels many 80's influences while blending in a little emo sexual angst. The opening of "Jenny was a friend of Mine" is evocative of vintage Duran Duran, while "Mr. Brightside" is impossible to listen to without thinking of Ultravox. "Smile like you Mean It" broods like the Cure with a snarl, and "Somebody Told Me" is pure pop perfection. At the midway point of the album is "All These Thing that I've Done" a sprawling gospel-rock anthem that will get a rise out of you. Then a thick -synth drenched "Andy, Youre a Star" brings out some Ziggy Stardust action. "Change your Mind" is a fast-paced ditty with some more Cure jangle, and "Believe me Natalie" almost defies description with its bossanova beat and horn section. The openiong of "Midnight Show" is almost identical to "I Will Follow" by U2, and the album closes with a song of pure uplift "Everything will Be Alright" (NOT a cover of the Naughty by Nature tune). Get this quick!

5.0 out of 5 stars Give me real, don't give me fake, February 11, 2006
Coldplay's Parachutes was a stunning, yet meandering debut album. They were now faced with the task that had daunted so many bands before them, including their mentors U2---How to make our atmospheric, lush sounds coalesce into pop songs?

This album does it. From the opening piano bang of "Politik", Chris Martin and co. try to grow their own Joshua Tree, and very nearly succeed. Nearly every song on this album has an inescapable melody, and the origins of Coldplay's Bono-Edge obsession sprout here, especially on "God Put a Smile" and "Clocks". There are two missteps here, and both sound similar. One is "Daylight" and the other is "A Whisper" which both seem to repeat the same melody over and over again. But every other song on this album is a gem. My personal favorite is the title track and "The Scientist" both evoking Lennon-Mccartney. Get this before X and Y. This one is a little better.

5.0 out of 5 stars How do you turn a 6'5" man into a blubbering fool? Watch this gem, February 11, 2006
This review is from: The Iron Giant (DVD)
When I originally saw this movie shortly after its release on DVD way back when, I could not believe how good it was. I recently watched it for the second time and it now qualifies as hands down one of the greatest animated movies ever made. Not necessarily for the animation, but for the storyline, plot, characters and voice acting. The story of Hogarth Hughes and the giant robot he befriends in the middle of Cold Way USA 50's is unbelievably touching. A must view for any family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Original and Derivative at Once? Absolutely, and it ROCKS!!!, February 11, 2006
This review is from: American Idiot (Audio CD)
Green Day took the concept of a jaded rock opera in the Bush USA and knocked it out of the park. Every melody on this album sounds like you've heard it before and at the same time it sounds fresh. "Jesus of Suburbia" may be the greatest hard rock song in the last 20 years, evoking the spirit of Queen and the anger of the Clash all at once. The title track and "St. Jimmy" are familiar Green Day territory, while "She's a Rebel" and "Extraordinary Girl" are pop masterpieces. This is an addicitve drug that you won't soon get out of your head.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Got Your No-Nonsense Pimp, You Got Your Gorilla Pimp, and You Got Your Drug Pimp...., January 19, 2006
This review is from: Pimps Up, Ho's Down (DVD)
Call me a gorilla pimp after seeing this "pimpumentary." Mr. Whitefolks is simply the greatest individual ever to walk this earth. "A Professional gentleman of leisure" as he states on his answering machine message, the story of a white pimp making it in a brothers' world is simply too great to be ignored. Other characters of note include Don the Magic Juan, Snooky (who keeps his hoes walking with they heads down---nice touch), Ice-T, Pimpin' Ken, and a female pimp Big Lex. Get all up in this piece like chicken grease and buy dis beatch ASAP!

Movie Quotes

"I have to put a ho under pimp arrest for reckless eyeballin'."--Mr. WhiteFolks

"Hoes can just smell a pimp."--Snooky

"Pimpin' and hoein' is the best thing goin'."--Pimpin Ken

5.0 out of 5 stars "We Shall Call It the Library, Where We Bury the Lies.", January 9, 2006
This review is from: Edutainment (Audio CD)
This is one of the sickest, and most appropriately titled, albums ever in any genre. KRS-One lays down his manifesto immediately on "Blackman in Effect" and doesn't let up one ounce on gems such as "Beef" "Edutainment" House Niggas" "Ya Know the Rules" etc etc etc. In Fact, the only tracks I don't like on this record are "Love's Gonna Getcha" and "30 Cops or More". Every other track on this is slammin' in my humble opinion. Way back in the day I would play this constantly along with "By Any Means" and "Ghetto Music"

5.0 out of 5 stars Come on! Come on! Come on! Come on! Do the Donkey Kong!!!, January 8, 2006
One of the all time great albums. Pac-man Fever speaks for itself, but if you have not heard gems like "Donkey Kong" "Froggy's Lament" "Goin' Berserk" and the epic "Ode to a Centipede" obtain this album immediately. You will not regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carrot Top is a Delight, January 8, 2006
This review is from: Chairman of the Board (DVD)
Just remember: Carrot Top cannot be equalled. This movie should have garnered an Oscar for every word of dialogue uttered within its parameters. I'm sure that giving out 32,684 Oscars for one movie would have bankrupted the gold industry, but it would been worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Acting Genius, January 8, 2006
This review is from: Slam Dunk Ernest (DVD)
I bought this movie simply for the cover, which I now have as the background on my computer. But now that I have seen the movie, a tear trickles down one cheek and I sit here speechless, unable to look at anything else in the world without thinking of the beauty that is the team of Ernest and the Basketball Angel, played marvellously by none other than Kareem-Abdul Jabbar. I will not spoil plot details, as other reviewers have covered that ground. Just know that when you see this, your life will change, and you will want the entire Ernest collection, as my wife and I have discovered. We made love to this sweet movie, timing our passionate thrusts to the dribbling basketball.
