5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't know that!, March 30, 2013

What would you do if your child were kidnapped by hostile people? Scott Zesch answered that question and also answered the question about how the children reacted to the abductions and maltreatments. I consider Captured to be the best researched and written story that I have so far read about white people who were kidnapped by the American Indians. From a family story about one of his relatives who had been captured, to the inclusion of other stories about the kidnapped white people in the history of the American west, his writing is crisp and exciting. Often the information is brutal and sad and he can never answer the questions about the difficulties faced by most of the whites, especially when they were returned to the white culture. But these were incredible stories about truly incredible people and the bridge they created between white and Indian cultures; Hollywood movies lied.

5.0 out of 5 stars To understand anything about the Civil War, you must read this book!, November 20, 2012

I learned more about the people, events, and effects of the Civil War from Team of Rivals, than I ever did having college degrees in the history of the United States! It is as easy to read and as beautiful as any prose, and the brilliance and passion of Abraham Lincoln leaps off of the pages. The movie, Lincoln, is based only on a very small portion of the book, and reading the massive volume is like watching 100 movies! To understand modern American life, and modern American politics, it is incumbent upon everyone to read Team of Rivals. The loss of Lincoln in America's future after the Civil War, becomes astoundingly clear.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like reading a doctoral thesis, November 5, 2012

As an avid reader of memoirs of the Civil War era, I was really looking forward to this new biography of Seward. It is definitely packed with details and explanations of Seward's life and behaviors. The style became tedious to read, however. Still, excellent though, as Seward himself was "packed with details" and "sometimes tedious!" (In my opinion!)
