4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Beginning Marketers Who Are Trying To Understand How To Maximize Online Reviews, June 15, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This book does an exceptional job of breaking down the current review platforms and why they are (or are not) important to anyone who has a business. The discussion about why reviews matter more now than ever since any business can be reviewed by anyone helps business owners who don't understand marketing or the internet get a grasp on why they must start paying attention.

The first time many people get involved in paying attention to reviews is when they get a negative review, they get furious, they want it removed . . . but negative reviews can have a positive result as discussed in the book. However, the most important thing is to understand exactly what you need to do to curate your image online and to manage your customer experience both online and offline.

At first I thought this probably should have been a much shorter guide but as I dug in and saw the detail that was being provided for the major review platforms and many second tier platforms I changed my mind. Understanding exactly how the different sites work and understanding the strategy for managing them makes determining what you will do where and how to interact made me change my mind.

Additionally, the information on cultivating reviews was very powerful. We all hope to get very positive reviews but don't really know what to do beyond asking a few friends to help that have the most impact. The big takeaway for most people reading this book regardless of how experienced a marketer they are is the comprehensive strategy development about putting reviews to work for you in a proactive way. That part alone is worth the price of the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost A Redemption Story- Great Writing About Mountain Living And The Struggles Of Being A Child Of Divorce In The 70s, June 15, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I grew up in an even smaller Idaho town than the one the author did and have spent years in and around mountain towns around Idaho and the Northwest. In every town you'll find people who are fiercely independent, who are struggling to make a living from the land or to keep the land they have and to preserve a way of life that is slowly fading.

Novella's story of her father begins with a call from the authorities saying her father hasn't been seen for a while and people are worried, he is in his 70s and the mountains and the commerce associated with them are brutally unforgiving.

Novella's search for her father is both real and a not so subtle back story of her attempt to reconnect with a father who has been noticeably absent most of her life. When she finds her father and tries to reconnect she is disappointed, angry, and very observant of how they are alike . . . and not at all alike. As she strolls back through the towns and valleys of her childhood she portrays a cast of characters that are still living and reflective of the reality of the struggle to survive in even modern mountain towns where access to basic necessities like running water in houses and indoor plumbing are still sometimes not present. Her description of her father filling up yellowed milk jugs with water at a gas station water pump is some of the most simultaneously telling, and haunting writing that you'll read . . . unless you lived through the 70s and thought nothing of drinking from a hose or stream in a time when you'd have been laughed out of town for spending $2.00 on a bottle of water.

Gone Feral does a beautiful job of using sparse sentences to create volumes of emotion. If you were born before 1975 and knew anyone who was divorced you probably knew someone like Novella and her father. Mom and dad divorce, dad or mom move on, mom takes the kids and maybe dad shows up or send a card at birthdays and christmas. This life is multiplied when one parent stays in the small town, working as a logger or trapper, farmer or guide. Every moment is consumed with survival and a kind of craziness, real or developed can set it.

Novella's father clearly has some degrees of mental illness and yet he is for the most part lucid and intelligent, he has travelled and lived internationally, he is a craftsman who can create beautiful guitars and play them delightfully. But he is haunted by demons that will never let him go. The descriptions of Novella's anger at her father and her attempts to connect are truly heart wrenching, you can feel her emotion and his attempt to try and portray something like emotion, though his appear to be limited to self loathing and anger.

While this book isn't wrapped up with a happy ending it couldn't be more appropriate. Life goes on in mostly expected ways and it isn't a movie, there are no heroes and no saviors, just people trying to make sense of it all in a world that is changing in ways we all have a hard time understanding.

This is one of the best books of its kind. If you lived through the 70s this book is for you, if you grew up in a small town this book is for you, if you simply love delicious writing, this book is definitely for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Short Read That Covers A Lot Of Ground From Stoicism To Business, Humanity and Success, May 16, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is a great, distilled primer on Stoicism that leads you directly to the big books on the subject. I like the way he approaches living a stoic life. What I really enjoyed about it is how human and approachable he made Marcus Aurelius and Seneca. The applications to real day to day life made the book a joy to read and to find new ways of applying the philosophy.

The big idea that I took away from the book was to look at obstacles in new ways but leverage persistence to truly create change. The direct approach surprisingly is usually not the best approach. Seeing through different eyes as described by Ryan Holiday via the application of Stoicism gives you the tools to develop a new plan, a process they will create real change. This is a book about the long haul and the great good, not get yours and go which has become so prevalent in business books today.

If you want to get more done, stress less, be more creative and begin learning the basics of one of the most advanced forms of philosophy and life this is definitely the book for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone and definitely not for small businesses or entrepreneurs, May 15, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I wanted to like this book after reading all the great reviews and it wasn't bad. This isn't a book for companies that are small, that are not well funded or that are not leading with a big personality. This is a book for those companies whose leaders want to be visible and somewhat controversial and outspoken.

While at a macro level the ideas are good they are not presented in a way that a leader or business owner could really apply them to their business if they bought the book. This is a book of concepts and "look what I did" business ideas. And, they are definitely directed at the high tech and venture based businesses.

I felt like this book tried to hard to establish the author as a celebrity and didn't focus on the issues that entrepreneurs who are not venture based face. I would have liked a much more in the trenches book that talked about real world issues that most businesses face and how to deal with those. Or a book that addressed problems that a majority of business owners face and talk about solutions and examples of implementation for those issues.

I would have given this book four stars if a majority of the book wasn't available on the author's blog. The book is well written and does have some great material but you have to really search for it and the application.

3.0 out of 5 stars This product is good but not great - Does work well as a pre-shave wash, March 5, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I've used the Axe face wash for about 10 days now and I've found several things:

1. The product is really not that much better than soap and water and I didn't find the scent that enjoyable.
2. I did find that as a pre shave wash I got a much closer shave, this worked much like a shave oil.
3. I liked the ease of use at night for a quick face wash before bed.

Overall this is a good product and one I might buy occasionally but it wouldn't be a go to wash or pre-shave treatment primarily because (and it is not marketed as this) it doesn't really exfoliate which I prefer.

I don't have more to say about this as I really felt pretty average about it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong On Fundamentals, February 14, 2014
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a great book for someone just learning archery. I picked it up to help my 9 year old daughter learn the basics of archery as she has just taken up the sport. I found the book to be contain very solid basics presented in a useable format for a learner or someone coaching a beginner. This is not a book for advanced archers who are already shooting.

Also, you should note that this book is about traditional target archery and not hunting or other types of archery.

The books is broken down into easy to use segments that help build one skill on top of the other. The language is easy enough that my daughter could read the book and understand the information as well. I'd strongly recommend this book for beginners and coaches.

My only real complaint about the book is a lack of index, I hate when there is a basic table of contents and no index to find things quickly. I would have also liked a better review of compound bows and shooting accessories as well. All that said this is still a very complete book that should be part of every archer's library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, Great Thinkers, I Mostly Liked The Celebrities, February 14, 2014
This review is from: Brainwave (DVD)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a 3 DVD set that is chock full of interesting ideas on the mind and dreaming. I really like the context around which the series is built. My favorite interviewer was former Black Flag lead singer Henry Rollins.

With that said, I thought that it was hard to have the interviewers ask really relevant questions given their lack of knowledge of the science. Sometimes it felt like they were trying too hard to find a good question to ask. That said what kept me going was the way in which the scientists were able to bring the topic back around and make it interesting and the way in which the celebrity interviewers were able to hold the conversation anyway.

This is a deep dive into your dreams, how they happen, why they happen, what causes crazy dreams and even lucid dreaming. It is also a deep dive into your mind and your brain. You will walk away from this many hours later much richer in your knowledge of the mind and the dream state.

I was floored by the big ideas and research being presented, but I'm particularly fascinated by how the mind works. Some people might find that a little dry . . . except in this series they keep even the dry stuff interesting and that is one of the great values of the celebrities in the series.

Overall for this to be a five star to me they would need to have added a third professional interviewer to the mix to really bring out the very best stuff, but this is great even without.

Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars There is a lot of noise in the headset, February 1, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I wasn't really happy with this wireless headset due to the number of times it dropped calls and the amount of static in the headset. I moved it around to keep it away from other power supplies, monitors etc., but it still didn't work that well. Combined with the number of times it dropped calls it made it unusable.

I've had great luck with Plantronics headsets over the years so I was really surprised and disappointed with the quality of this one. I can't recommend it in good faith. I gave it two stars because I think it might work fine in a solopreneur office or a single office phone use but I'm not completely confident of that. Also be careful, the range is severely limited by walls so if you have into an office with several walls between the base and the headset quality degrades to nil quickly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid book for beginners with good photographs of each exercise being performed properly, February 1, 2014
This review is from: Body Trainer for Men (Paperback)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Body Trainer for Men is a good book and really appropriate for men or women. All exercises can be performed by either sex. The book is pretty well written but I found it a little dry and not always complete in the description of the exercise. The descriptions were good enough but I thought they could have been better.

There are many books that cover the material in this book so if you have read a few already you won't find much new here. However what is better than most is the number of routines that the author has constructed for many different results and sports applications. The book is also broken into sections for beginner, intermediate and advanced workouts.

The information on diet is not thorough enough. I'd have liked to see something that reflected more current research and thinking on diet, weight loss and muscle building. The book seemed a little incomplete in that regard. I think the challenge is that the author tries to cover too many approaches to eating rather than picking a program and advocating for it and showing how to apply it.

Overall I'm happy with this book but felt like it was more directed at people who had not really spent much time reading about working out. Had it been a little more complete in areas, a little more interestingly written I would have given it four stars, if I could give it 3.5 I would for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars My 9 Year Old Daughter and I Loved This Book! Great Puzzles and Exceptional Learning Opportunities, November 10, 2013
This review is from: Mind Benders (Hardcover)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
First off this book is big, bright, and visually appealing to kids. They can't wait to open it up and get into it. I love it when books are made to be accessible and appealing to kids.

The book is chock full of great puzzles that require kids to think and do something. My daughter really enjoyed the math mind benders and the shape construction problems. The shape construction problems come in several forms. Shapes that you lay out to make new shapes. Cardboard pieces that you must first fold into 3D shapes and then stack those into other shapes. The puzzles took her a few minutes to figure out but she didn't have to use the answers to complete the problems with one exception . . .

The Horseshoe problem, that one was tough!

There are many other puzzles, riddles and challenges for kids to explore as well and each is well described and solvable for most kids in the 8 - 12 year old range I'd imagine. The book isn't full of easy challenges, some of them are quite difficult but present an opportunity for the child to learn something new as they discover the answer and something that they can apply.

My daughter especially liked the riddles and math tricks that she could memorize and share at school. We've had the book over a week now and it is a daily read so far. I strongly recommend this book for kids that are curious and those you'd like to see be more curious. I'm very impressed with the quality and construction (the book is designed to open flat) of the book along with the quality of the information contained inside.

Great book for 8 - 12 year olds!
