5.0 out of 5 stars A must-see film, February 27, 2011
This review is from: Hurt Locker [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
An amazingly visceral and potent look at war its costs. Expert direction and stunning cinematography. A film that manages to be suspenseful and thrilling but at the same time sober and unromantic. A truly great film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bill Haley came before Elvis, April 23, 2010
This review is from: The Decca Years & More (Audio CD)
Just to correct a previous reviewer, Bill Haley was recording rock and roll in 1951, a full 3 years before Elvis Presley made his first record at Sun. Rocket 88, Rock the Joint, Crazy Man, Crazy and many more were recorded on the Essex label in Philadelphia before Haley signed with Decca in 1954. Presley and Haley are both great in different ways. While you can argue about who is better, the fact is that Bill Haley was first and deserves credit for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only legitimate Bill Haley DVD available!, September 25, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rock 'N' Roll Is Born (DVD)
This British DVD is recent (2008?) and hard to find, but well worth the effort. It fills in the gaps between hillbilly music, R & B and rock and roll. Bill Haley is the true white pioneer of rock and roll. He was recording rock and roll 3 years before Elvis ever set foot in a recording studio. This DVD tells his story with unedited performance footage from the extremely rare 1954 film "Roundup of Rhythm" which shows Haley and his Comets before "Rock Around the Clock" was a hit. American critics have almost always discounted him and his music and created the "rock and roll was invented in Memphis by Elvis and Sam Phillips" myth. I'm glad that European fans and critics have recognized Haley's importance from the start. If you want to hear great music and see a forgotten pioneer, then I highly recommend this DVD.

Great artist who is little known now, but was a major force in the late 40's-50's blues and rhythm scene. Great pianist -check out "Down the Road A Piece" and a solid vocalist too. This compilation from our German friends at Bear Family Records is perfection itself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unsung singer, January 16, 2005
This box set is a major investment, but well worth it for any fan of great singing. The bell-like timbre and soaring range of Anita Carter's voice is unlike any other popular vocalist in the 20th century. So few people know about Anita Carter, but thanks to Bear Family records that will hopefully change. Now I hope that Bear Family will release all the sides cut by the Carter Sisters (Anita, June and Helen) and Mother Maybelle.

5.0 out of 5 stars An little-known treasure, January 16, 2005
This review is from: King of Hillbilly Bebop (Audio CD)
This wonderful double CD introduced me to Hank Penny. As a western swing fan, I thought I'd heard it all, but Hank Penny's edgy, hard drivin' music took me places I'd never been in this genre. His smooth vocals lend the smart, often hilarious lyrics just the right amount of irony. The musicians are all first rate; from Noel Boggs to Speedy West and Merle Travis and the early 50's numbers like "Hadicillin Boogie" show that Hank was one of that elite group of musicians who anticipated the coming of rock 'n' roll.
