5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful and Well Written Pragmatic Guide, January 13, 2015
This is an exceptional little book packed with useful practical information. It can help anyone regardless of where they might be on their particular personal trajectory. If the principles are applied one can live a fuller, happier more productive life.

Yes, it's a self-help book -- but a good one because of de Jong's concise writing style, his many real life examples, his inspirational approach and his no-nonsense approach.
You want to change your life? You want to succeed? Look at the person in the mirror. That's the person you have to really study first. De Jong offers insightful ways of doing that. You hold your future in your mind.
How can one not be impressed with a book that addresses such astute questions as "Why don't more people live the lives they want? "Do you know what you want your life to look like, but have no idea how to make it happen?"

The book addresses these and many other provocative issues every human encounters.
I also like the idea that it is not a wordy, goody-two-shoes book full of false promises. For instance, "all you have to do is dream, anything is possible." That's foolish and misguided advice as de Jong points out, if you have poor eyesight there is no way in the world you can become a fighter pilot. So discover your strengths and limitations, develop a plan of action, stick to it and you shall indeed blossom!

I received a pre-publication copy of this book a few weeks ago but it will be available to all very soon.
It's a great gift for a high school senior, a college student, someone beginning their career or in a mid-career crisis, or someone entering retirement -- another crisis point for many!

In short, everybody can benefit from reading, studying and applying the principles in this slim book. It is full of self-directed exercises that can really open hidden parts of your psyche and nourish your varied potentialities.

So -- Take Action! and Build the Life you want!

GrinGa: My Love Affair with Panama
GrinGa: My Love Affair with Panama
by Hindi Diamond
Edition: Perfect Paperback
18 used & new from $6.38

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic accurate picture of Panama and the Canal Zone, January 8, 2014
Hindi Diamond was a modern day journalist pioneer in Central America and especially in the Republic of Panama and the American Canal Zone.

She was a quick study and could write a story to make you feel you were there witnessing history in the making. Her lively style enhances this book.

She was also handy with with her trusty camera and recorded much of the area's local history during World War II and decades thereafter.
This is a good read -- fast paced, a slice of history and ever so true.

NB: Dr. Mellander has written several books about Panama.

Military railroads on the Panama Canal zone
Military railroads on the Panama Canal zone
by Charles S. Small
Edition: Unknown Binding

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but complete and accurate, January 8, 2014
The very topic of this book limits its scope and potential audience. Further, the author writes in a rather dry business style : data-filled, terse and to the point. Not a criticism just an observation. But luckily it is also accurate and truthful .

Book won't be a best seller but adds to the varied history of military trains and railroads that existed throughout the world during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Mr. Small has captured the trials and usefulness of the military railroads in the Canal Zone.

NB : Dr. Mellander has written several books on Panama.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Topic -- Interesting Book, January 8, 2014
Anybody who has read a whodunit court room jury trial book know how important the selection of a jury is or can be.
Just look at recent trials in the U.S. and notice how some jurors weren't interested at all in the facts for their minds were made up. Some had political views, some were prejudiced either for the defendant or against the defendant. It's not pretty but that's what we have.

People get paid to help lawyers analyze who will be disposed to favor their client. Truth has nothing to do with it. Figure how a person might vote, if that person will support your client -- then select him. Far too much emotion in our trials -- but that's what we have.

Discerning persons will be interested in this book which gives the lay person insight on how juries are selected. The give and take, the psychology of it all.

Is it a lousy system?> No, just not perfect and I hastened to add a lot better than what exists in many other countries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful and historically sound, January 16, 2013
This well-written book covers an important era of United States, Great Britain and the Isthmus of Panama diplomatic history.

Panama pre-1903 was a part of first Gran Colombia and later Colombia. Panama joined Gran Colombia under Simon Bolivar in the early 1800s when virtually all Spanish colonies separated from Spain after Napoleon placed his brother on the Spanish throne.

The age old dream of building a canal across the Isthmus motivated several European countries. The U. S. opposed those ambitions and evoked the Monroe Doctrine to justify keeping Europe out of the Americas.

That lead to a diplomatic tug of war between the U.S. and various European countries who wanted to establish a foothold on the Isthmus. England was certainly in the forefront.

This good and historically sound book covers all the British and U. S. diplomatic maneuvering very completely and quite effectively.

For more details consult the Panama Canal Museum at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida.

NB: Dr. Mellander earned a Ph. D. in Latin American history and specialized in Panamanian-U.S. history.

Secret Affairs: Franklin Roosevelt, Cordell Hull, and Sumner Welles
Secret Affairs: Franklin Roosevelt, Cordell Hull, and Sumner Welles

2.0 out of 5 stars Sloppy rendition of an important era, January 16, 2013
Sorry but this is really poorly written and biased.

Franklin Roosevelt's State Department was a snake pit. It's story, fascinating to a fault, should be chronicled for the public and future historians.

It's a story that should be told in a concise and far more scholarly fashion. Gossip may be interesting
but it is not main point to be made.

The author is to be congratulated, however, for amassing a vast amount of information in one volume. Some of it is new information,or at least not very widely known. But the prose and disjointed multiple events and personalities, overwhelms the reader. For instance, he brings in key persons without introducing them in an adequate fashion. The result is confusion even for those who have studied the era.

The book's greatest contribution may be that others can use it as a point of reference for more lucid presentations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reliable and scholarly insight into the Tainos, January 8, 2013
A thoroughly researched study written by an acknowledged expert on the people, the Tainos, who greeted Columbus when he explored the Caribbean.

It is a serious treatise not a travelogue. It may be hard reading for some since the author was an anthropologist and a dedicated researcher. He worked and studied for many years in the Caribbean. His scholarship permeates the book.

Interestingly, much of the book traces Taino heritage as well and thus provides the reader more than Taino history.

All in all, a reliable good read.

Leaders of Color in Higher Education: Unrecognized Triumphs in Harsh Institutions

5.0 out of 5 stars Painful realities faced by "minority" university administrators, December 7, 2012
Professor Valverde, former university administrator, has compiled an academically sound volume on the known and unknown hurdles faced by "minority" administrators.

Although things seem to get better every year, this book highlights the rugged and treacherous terrain that still exists. Based on academic publications, in-depth interviews with those who have "made it" and his personal experiences as a high level academic administrator, this is a must read for all students of administration.

The material is divided into three sections.

The first explores leadership within very broad parameters. It is highly detailed and academic. Valverde documents internal and external prejudices as well as institutional biases --some obvious, some not.

Secondly, Valverde focuses on the establishment's inability to accept that the nation's student body has changed dramatically since they were students. There are, of course, many exceptions, but they are just that -- exceptions.

Early pioneers such as Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, George I. Sanchez and Tomas Rivera career trajectories are detailed. As well are the pathways of women of color. Useful inspirational vignettes add to the value of this book.

The third part details the successes that have been achieved. Valverde details a plan to help change the negative culture and practices.

Through it all he remains optimistic that the the nation will move forward.
