A creepy, surreal fantasy adventure set in an intricately imagined secondary world. They don't make them like this anymore.

4.0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful, meandering journey, January 7, 2015

An understated series that makes some interesting observations about the human condition. Although there is sporadic violence, it's not the focus of the story.

Just a fun space operatic romp, with memorable characters and a great sound track.

An okay series, but short and somewhat disjointed. There are developments at the end that could have been better foreshadowed, so as not to seem like they came from left field.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of adventure stories drawn from real history, January 7, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this for the Napoleon miniseries (which is overpriced elsewhere), but wound up also enjoying Longitude and (especially) the Horatio Hornblower films. Benedict Arnold was hard to endure, given the characterization of the man as a venal and belligerent prima donna. Still, an excellent deal.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, October 29, 2009
This review is from: Seven Swords (DVD)
Choppy cinematography, poor characterization, and an incoherent plot. I'm not sure what the director was trying to accomplish, but the film as presented is practically incomprehensible. The fight choreography is nothing special, and the dialogue seems to lurch from one non sequitur to another. One gets the impression that better editing could have produced a very different (and possibly superior) film, but what is there just doesn't hold together.

1.0 out of 5 stars So preposterous, I couldn't finish watching it., January 20, 2009
An utterly atrocious film. Not only is the premise completely ludicrous, but the (literal) climax of the movie depicts the protagonist being raped -- raped! -- by his spiteful ex-girlfriend, who is awarded a sizable cash prize for her crime. The protagonist is then harangued by his volatile love interest for "cheating" and forced to apologize! And all of this is somehow supposed to be funny. What. The. Hell?! If the roles had been reversed -- if the rape and humiliation of a female protagonist had been portrayed as a comical misunderstanding -- 40 Days & 40 Nights would have been barred from theaters for trivializing sex crimes and poking fun at their victims. How can anyone find this kind of sexual double-standard acceptable, let alone entertaining?

5.0 out of 5 stars Grim(m) Fairy Tales, July 22, 2008
I came by The Last Wish via The Witcher video game, and I am quite satisfied with both. As a European, Sapkowski seems not to have been tainted by the triteness and commercialism that has afflicted so much speculative fiction in the U.S. His writing is gritty and dark, like the original fairy tales on which it seems to be based. The protagonist, Geralt of Rivia, is a classic anti-hero--a warrior who has made himself into a monster in order to combat still greater monsters. His task is necessary yet thankless, and he approaches it with the attitude of a hardened mercenary--as just another job. I cannot express how refreshing that is in an era of Tolkien-clones and shallow D&D novelizations, in which every character has some Grand Destiny(TM) and good and evil regularly clash in Titanic Battles for the Fate of the World(TM).

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Wuxia Comedy Romp, July 22, 2008
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Royal Tramp Collection (DVD)
I've enjoyed Stephen Chow in Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer, so I figured I'd give The Royal Tramp Collection a try, and I wasn't disappointed. The pair of stories about a conman who inadvertently befriends the emperor of China (and beds and marries his spoiled sister!), while simultaneously defusing multiple competing plots to overthrow the dynasty, is hilarious in its zany unlikelihood. The films combine excellent kung fu action and slapstick comedy in an entertaining package. Be sure to watch them with the English language track. The voice acting is nothing special, but the translation captures a lot more of the humor than the lackluster subtitles.
