A Search in Secret India
A Search in Secret India
by Paul Brunton
Edition: Paperback
Price: $18.63
86 used & new from $5.36

4.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Journey of Paul Brunton, May 14, 2015
This is a story of the author's spiritual search and his experiences with yogis, mystics and other holy men in India. Paul Brunton was a western journalist who approached this task with skepticism and with a scholarly journalistic style for seeking the "truth". As a result, Paul Brunton uncovered incidents of charlatanism as well as examples of true mysticism. Paul Brunton eventually became a follower of Ramana Maharshi and through Ramana's tutelage experienced his own spiritual awakening. Ramana Maharshi is recognized as perhaps the greatest saints in the 20th century and, notwithstanding the foregoing, Paul Brunton's spiritual experience must be viewed and regarded with the same skepticism that he used in evaluating other yogis and spiritual methods. It seems true that that the only measure of any method to spirituality is one's own personal experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overview of Prostate Conditions and Treatments, April 21, 2015
"The Prostate Book" written by Paul Scardino, a renown prostate surgeon and chairman of the Department of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, is an overview of the prostate including normal functioning of the prostate and some of the most common prostate problems which are experienced by many men. These include BPH, (an enlarged prostate), Prostatitis,( inflammation of the prostate), and prostate cancer. The author provides excellent guidance and explanation of the various treatments to the aforementioned conditions. This book is an excellent guide and overview for all those who have prostate cancer and or less serious prostate conditions to those interested in a more academic interest in this subject. I would highly recommend this book.

The Great Prostate Hoax: How Big Medicine Hijacked the PSA Test and Caused a Public Health Disaster
The Great Prostate Hoax: How Big Medicine Hijacked the PSA Test and Caused a Public Health Disaster
by Richard J. Ablin
Edition: Hardcover
Price: $18.65
44 used & new from $6.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Informative but not Helpful, April 7, 2015
Dr Ablin is a pathologist, professor and scientist who initially discovered PSA which was later marketed into a testing mechanism for the detection of cancer. Dr Ablin contends that the PSA Test is not a specific test for prostate cancer in that it could be and indication of an enlarged prostate, prostatitis, infection and other factors. Moreover, the cancer that is found is only fatal in only three percent of the cases leading to the conclusion that a man would have an equal chance of survival opting for no treatment than a treatment potentially leading to incontinence and or impotence. It is interesting to note that men between the ages of 60-69 are likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer 60 percent of the time soley as an age related disease increasing as one enters his 70 and 80's. Although this is a very interesting and informative book which casts a pall on the multi billion dollar prostate industry in which many people are pushed into unnecessary and expensive treatment, the author makes no suggestions of what approach or approaches could by most viable options in treating prostate cancer. This is not an uplifting book.

Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion
Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion

3.0 out of 5 stars Provacative Explanation of Spirituality/Religion, March 19, 2015
The basic principal of this book is that our feeling of "I" is an illusion, that there is no "self" or "ego" and that only consciousness exists. The author states that he is a self proclaimed atheist whose view of organized religion "is a monument to the ignorance and superstition of our ancestors". After studying with a wide range of monk, lamas, yogis, and other contemplatives, the author gravitated toward the path of "Self Enquiry" of Sri Ramana Maharahi and eventually to the practice of Dzigehen taught to him by Tulka Urgyen Rinpoche, a Dzogehen Master. The author states that under Tulka Urgyen Rinpoche, the author was able to recognize that consciousness is intrinsically free of self. the author states that he came to Tulka Urgyen Rinpoche yearning for "self transcendence" and in a few minutes was shown that he had no "self" to transcend. The author provides a masterful presentation of the comparisons between Western and Eastern Traditions but misses the mark in several respects. He seems to applaud drug experimentation in the achievement of "self transcendence" which many people would discredit as a means to "enlightenment". The author also discounts the "near death and other psychic and spirituals experiences" as not mystical ones but only phenomena influenced by brain activity. In addition to the foregoing, the author only seems to accept his own experiences and discounts all others. Concerning a topic which is totally beyond any intellectual explanation and could only be understood by personal experience, it would have been better for the author to be less critical of other disciplines.

Sermons of Meister Eckhart
Sermons of Meister Eckhart
Price: $0.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking and Inspiring, March 15, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The fundamental philosophy of Meister Eckhart is that the "Absolute", "Abstract Unity", or "God" is devoid of all attributes and that we are formed by means of a "spark" of the "Divine". This spark enlivens and sustains us and is the basis of our consciousness. In contrast, our finite self which is an outgrowth of our eternal self, is represented by our mind and body. Unfortunately, we often identify with these finite expressions instead of the eternal aspect of our "Self". This is not an easy book to understand and does not go into the depth of Meister Eckhart's spirituality as some of his other books; however, it is inspiring and well worth the read.

Crumbs from Sri Ramana Maharshi's table
Crumbs from Sri Ramana Maharshi's table

4.0 out of 5 stars Difficult but Uplifting, March 8, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a short book into Ramana Maharshi's path of "Self Enquiry" by means of asking the question of "Who am I". Ramana Maharshi states that through constant probing of this question the "I" disappears and what survives is "Self Knowledge" or "Self Realization". Ramana Maharshi also believes that "Self Enquiry" is the easiest and most direct method leading to salvation. Although this is an uplifting book, it is not one that is easy to understand but well worth the read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to Comprehend, February 22, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Self-enquiry (Kindle Edition)
Although the reader my garner the central theme of Ramana Maharshi's philosophy and or mysticism, this book is to technical for the average reader. I believe there are other books that give more of an insight into this philosophy and or mysticism. "The Secret Path" written by Paul Brunton, a follower of Ramana Maharshi, explains this theory of "Self Realization" by asking the central question "Who am I" and outlining the method and practice of this path through self analysis, breathing technique and mental quiet. Therefore, although "Self Enquiry" is somewhat informative, I would not recommend it.

Glimpsing Heaven: The Stories and Science of Life After Death
Glimpsing Heaven: The Stories and Science of Life After Death
Price: $8.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Analysis and Summary of Near Death Experience, February 17, 2015
This is a book very similar to other books concerning the "Near Death Experience"; however, this book seems to be a more comprehensive study into this interesting phenomenon. The author conducted a study and comparison of numerous interviews of people who had a "Near Death Experience". The common similarity in all of these people was that they were drastically impacted in that they had a totally changed view of spirituality and the importance and purpose of their lives. In most cases these people were very reticent about sharing their experience with others in fear that they would be viewed as "loons". Also, due to this life changing event, many of their marriages ended up in divorce. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the nature Of the "Near Death Experience" seems to be connected to the life circumstances and personality of the individual. I believe it is difficult to make any objective assessment of the "Near Death Experience" due to the subjectivity involved and the fact that it is virtually impossible to make any scientific inquiry into this phenomenon. Although this book was very interesting and informative, I did not find it especially uplifting especially if you factor in the horrific "Near Death Experiences".

Krishnamurti: Reflections on the Self
Krishnamurti: Reflections on the Self
by J. Krishnamurti
Edition: Paperback
24 used & new from $15.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Analysis of the "Self", February 15, 2015
This is one of the finest books written on mysticism/philosophy that I have ever read. This mysticism/philosophy is very similar to that of Paul Brunton and that of the great Yogi Ramana Maharashi. Krishnamurti was a mystic, philosopher, author and public speaker who was gifted spiritually and who was seen as the next "World Teacher" by Charles W Leadbeater who was a prominent occultist and head of the Theophist Movement. However, notwithstanding the foregoing, Krishnamurti denounced all organized belief, the notion of gurus and the whole notion of the teacher/follower relationship. He advocated that true "Self Realization" arises through our relationship with others and the realization that there is no difference between the observed and observer. I would highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Theory and Practice of Mysticism, February 8, 2015
This is clearly one of the best written books on mysticism which I have ever read. Paul Brunton was a follower of the great Yogi Ramana Maharashi and had an experience of enlightenment while sitting with Ramana Maharashi. Paul Brunton basically espouses Ramana Maharashi's "God Realization" by asking oneself "Who am I", an inquiry into the nature of self. The author subsequently outlines a method of self realization through his method of self analysis, breathing, and mental quiet. This book is both inspiring into the nature of mysticism and practical in terms of its clear technique. I would highly recommend it.
