5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Resource on Officer Surviva, November 19, 2014
Officer safety is important to me and I read a lot of books on officer safety
topics. Most are geared toward police only because there has not been anything
written for probation or parole officers. Additionally, the reality is that too
many departments do not place a heavy emphasis on officer safety. Yes, it is
talked about but there are not many quality training classes that cover the
reality of violence that officers may face especially when working alone in the
field. I am blown away with this book and glad that there is finally a book
geared specifically towards probation/parole officers.

Officer Survival for Probation and Parole Officers by Scott Kirshner is an
excellent book that will propel the topic of officer safety for those who work
in the profession of community corrections. This book is long overdue and covers
so many vital topics to include: mindset, office safety, field safety, use of
force, searches, first aid and more. Even the topic of active shooters is
covered. I found the exercises to be practical, relevant, and extremely useful.
In the beginning of the book is an assessment that, if you answer the questions
honestly, will tell you areas that you are lacking. I also like that there is a
heavy emphasis on taking responsibility for training. Even if your department
does not offer safety related training classes it does not mean that you can’t
train outside of what your department offers. Complacency is also covered which
is such a huge problem especially for officers who have been around for a long
time and think that nothing is going to happen or that they can talk their way
out of every situation.

The chapter on self-aid/buddy-aid really opened my eyes to the need for more
training on first aid and the importance of carrying some quality medical gear
with me. I am definitely going to get a tourniquet, pressure dressing, chest
seal, and a hemostatic agent. I am also going to seek training on how to use a
nasopharyngeal airway. These items have never once been covered in any
department training that I have seen. After reading that chapter I now realize
how important these items can be should the worst case scenario occur to myself
or a partner.

If you are a PO and only read only one book this year then this is the one to
get. It is literally a phenomenal resource for officers. Stay safe!

1.0 out of 5 stars First One Faulty. No Second Chances On Critical Gear., July 31, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
When I received this light, I had high hopes for it. However, it did not work for me. I had to screw it down very tight just to get a faint, and flickering light. I used various brands of batteries, but nothing worked correctly. Sadly, I am returning the product, and I will not be using a replacement, since reliability is paramount to me. This was actually to be an experimental model, and if it performed well I would have ordered the version that utilizes the CR123 battery. Instead, I now have to go through the hassle of the return process, and pay the price of postage too!!!
So now, I ordered Fenix Flashlights 170 Lumens Flashlight (Upgraded), 1.5-Inch, Black to fill the role. I have had excellent results on three previous lights from Fenix, and I think readers of this review would likely do better with them too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reality Based Bug Out Book, May 8, 2014
This review is from: Realistic Bug Out Bag (Paperback)
Realistic Bug Out Bag by Max Cooper is definitely one of the better bug out bag
books available. There are a flood of books on the topic with most being very
short in length, quality, and insight. Although I am no stranger to the topic of
bug out bags I picked up a lot of gems in this book. Cooper hits the nail on the
head by reinforcing the idea that you may need to bug out on foot for a host of
reasons. Because of this, not only must your bag be light but you have to be in
condition to walk for an unknown period of time. Too many books focus solely on
lists of items to put in your bag without much insight or consideration of other
factors. This book is very “reality” based which cannot be overlooked especially
if you ever need to bug out on foot.

Aspects about this book that I like include:

+ The focus is on reality and not theory
+ Provides excellent advice on how to test your ability and conditioning
+ Discusses different variables that can impact your ability to effectively bug
out
+ Advocates using written goals and provides a resource (I have yet to find
another BOB book that focuses on using goals – great concept)
+ Stresses that food is a necessary component of your bug out bag even though it
is possible to survive up to 30 days without food
+ Provides a different approach to your actual bag. Many books focus on blending
in but Cooper provides another option.
+ Has a 21 question bug out assessment to keep you focused on your abilities and
needs
+ Full of valuable nuggets of information that you may not have previously
thought about
+ Talks about the realities of bugging out with children and the elderly
+ Provides a list of resources
+ Good use of photos

Overall Assessment:

Realistic Bug Out Bag by Max Cooper is one of the best bug out books that I have
read on the topic and I have read a lot. I have learned that the subject of bug
out bags, preparedness, every day carry, etc. is so large and diverse that one
book is not going to hit on every possible topic. The same goes for this book.
But, if you are looking for a truly realistic view of bugging out this book is
your resource.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable Resource, March 24, 2014
Personal Radio Service: Part 95 by Kent Hertz covers all of the Code of Federal
Regulations for FRS, GMRS, MURS, CB, Personal Locator Beacons, and other
devices. While the information in this book is available on the internet for
free I value having the ability to have it in book form that I can just grab off
my shelf and look through as a reference. Unfortunately, I have seen way too
much wrong information being presented on the internet that can end up getting
people into trouble if they violate the law. Also, navigating the FCC website
can be a hassle. This book provides me with the rules and regulations straight
from the source. Even though I am a fairly experienced two-way radio operator I
was very surprised on how much information regarding the rules that I did not
know especially relating to GMRS which is a very common radio. This book is a
good reference and well worth the price even though the information is available
in other places on the internet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent EMCOMM Resource, March 24, 2014
Emergency Radio Communications by Caleb Watts is a valuable resource for anyone
interested in using a two-way radio for emergency communications purposes.
Having an emergency communications plan is absolutely necessary during a
disaster and this book provides information that is relevant for anyone who is
looking for information on the development of such a plan. There are a lot of
two-way radio options available but each one has its own unique set of rules, as
well as, pros and cons. This book provides all of this information in a very
easy to understand format.

Aspects about this book that I like include:

+ Includes a communications assessment to help you determine your needs
+ Page 6 has a useful chart containing information on different radio systems
and their capabilities
+ Covers: FRS, GMRS, CB Radio, MURS, and Amateur Radio
+ Provides information from the Code of Federal Regulations which is the direct
source for current rules
+ The chapter on equipment provides specific recommendations of radios
+ Has a model of an Emergency Communications Plan that you can use and modify to
your needs.

Overall Assessment:

Emergency Radio Communications is a great book for preppers or other individuals
looking to put together an emergency communications plan. It is full of valuable
and up-to-date information. Many preppers claim they are lacking an effective
comms plan and this book will get you up to speed.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Relationship Between Prepping and Psychology, March 4, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Psychology of Preppers: Mental Health Issues by Gunner Morgan is a very good
overview that ties together the “possible” link between mental illness and those
who engage in extreme prepping. The author provides an excellent definition,
which appears to be his own, of “extreme prepping.” The section on “life
domains” was very informative and the insight between reality television shows
and prepping hits the nail on the head.

If you are interested in psychology and prepping this is a good book to get.
There does not seem to be a lot of information on the relationship between
prepping and psychology so this was a great reference.

I would recommend Psychology of Preppers: Mental Health Issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful Information for Building a Trauma Kit, March 3, 2014
This review is from: Building a Trauma Kit (Paperback)
I first heard of Gunner Morgan when I read his book [[ASIN:B00I9E0NJW Trauma
Care for the Worst Case Scenario]] which I thought was great. He now has this
new book called Building a Trauma Kit which is equally great. This book is full
of useful and relevant information on building a customized trauma kit. But, he
also goes into additional components such as medications and supplies for
medical situations as well as trauma. The medication section covers both
prescription and non-prescription medications. I really thought some useful
information was provided especially when considering giving medication to other
people. The section on wound suturing was perfectly accurate and relevant
considering all the talk on this subject.

Aspects of this book that I like:

+ Well thought out
+ Provides useful information on building an individualized kit
+ Includes a needs assessment to help focus you on what type of kit to build
+ Covers trauma and medical
+ Useful information on prescription and non-prescription medication
+ Insightful discussion on wound suturing
+ Provides a list of specific components that the author uses in his kit
+ Shows how Good Samaritan laws can be very different from state to state
+ Uses legitimate references to back up many claims
+ Provides a list of resources for further research

Overall Assessment:

Building a Trauma Kit by Gunner Morgan is an excellent complement to his book
Trauma Care for the Worst Case Scenario and well worth adding to your resource
library. I picked up a lot of useful information that will help me modify the
kit that I currently use. I especially recommend this book to law enforcement
officers and preppers.

I definitely recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical, Relevant, and Useful, February 17, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Practical Defense for the Untrained Person by Gunner Morgan is finally a book
that provides relevant, realistic, and detailed information that can be used.
There are a lot of “self-defense” books that provide no useful information. This
book on the other hand actually has specific information that is actually
useful. While the focus of this book is the “untrained person” the information
is still really applicable to the experienced as well. This book covers:
Mindset, stress reactions, breathing exercise, realities of conflict, different
types of fighting styles, targets to strike and weapons of opportunity. If you
have never been in a fight this book will tell you exactly what you need to know
in a straight forward manner that is realistic and practical.

Overall Assessment:

Overall, Practical Defense for the Untrained Person is an excellent resource for
those who need to know how to handle the toxic realities of violence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get this Book if you are Law Enforcement or a Prepper, February 13, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Trauma Care for the Worst Case Scenario is an excellent book on items to carry
in your medical kit especially relating to severe bleeding and open chest
wounds. The military has shown that rapid ability to stop serious bleeding is
absolutely critical and saves lives. This book goes over items such as
tourniquets, pressure dressing, chest seals, etc. and the author provides
specific product recommendations. Also discussed are tactical considerations if
you are injured but still have an active threat that wants to hurt you. This
requires a different level of response than say from an auto accident or a
natural disaster. At the end of the book are some basic practical exercises that
you can use. The book is well organized and full of useful and relevant
information when dealing with very serious and life-threatening injuries. This
book is concise and very relevant especially if you work in a dangerous
profession or society goes south!

If you work in law enforcement, the military, or you are a prepper then this is
a must have book in your resource library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have Resource for your Student, February 3, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Goal Setting for Scholars: Creating a Successful Life by Scott Kirshner, M.Ed.,
is a great resource for younger individuals to learn how to set goals. I
recently read the authors other book, “How to Set Goals and Keep Them” and this
book is written in the same easy to use format. The big difference with this
book is that it specifically targets a younger audience. This book is great for
middle school students, high school students, college students, and even young
adults who maybe lack direction. It is also good for school age individuals who
talk about their goals but don’t know how to write them down so that they can
actually achieve the goal one day.

Aspects of this book that I like include:

+ Short and to the point to keep your kids attention
+ Is geared toward younger individuals
+ Provides a lot of relevant examples of goal setting
+ Uses a format that is easy to use but detailed and specific
+ Discusses the relationship between motivation and goals
+ Reviews self-talk and how to stop negative self-talk
+ Provides valuable advice and insights
+ This book is a great opportunity for a parent to engage with their children on
the importance of goals

I got this book for my daughter who is in high school and looking at her future.
This is a solid reference to keep her on track. If the author comes out with a
paperback version of this book I will definitely pick it up.

Overall, Goal Setting for Scholars: Creating a Successful Life by Scott
Kirshner, M.Ed. is a must have resource on setting goals especially if you have
a kid in school. After reading this book your child will know exactly how to
write down their goals. Highly recommended.
