5.0 out of 5 stars Ackerman's books should be read by all residents., November 24, 2002
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have come to the conclusion that at least some Ackerman's books should be obligatorily read by all residents in pathology and dermatology. This would open their minds to different ways of thinking and different ideas during their "formative" years.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice tape, September 22, 2002

You can see different styles in a short time. It is also interesting to see how some of these power-people are slim, not at all overgrown by muscles.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dowland with saxophone: interesting at first, wears down, July 27, 2002
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
When in 1992 for the first time I went to London for a conference in pathology, as a Pole I was hoping to learn something (like anecdotes) about John Dowland (or other Brithish Renaissance masters like Thomas Tallis, or William Byrd). Unfortunately, none of the educated Britons I met has heard about these composers. This is the state of music today: people are exposed to droppings from the stages of some [bad] British pop music but know little about Dowland.
This Dowland recording is interesting: vocals are classic but some instruments, like saxophone, are not. I like it.
I am now rewriting this review. After listening to this CD 10 times, this peculiar blending of old(er) and new becomes less fresh, not to say annoying. I am now not sure if I am at all happy with this CD. Dowland in its original does not raise such doubts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant in some ways? Maybe, but it is hard to listen to., July 16, 2002

I am not sure if one can get used to this type of "angry" music, even trying to listen a lot to it. For those who like Mingus, this is a great recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still probably the best Chopin etudes, July 16, 2002
Recorded in the 70-ies, these are still probably the best performances/interpretations of Chopin etudes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book!, July 6, 2002
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a detailed description of Ackerman's views about dermatology, dermatopathology and surgical pathology. Like so many Ackerman's works, it is also a work of art, sometimes with the impressive detail, color and light of stained glass in a medieval church.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very nice movie about World War II in Russia, June 28, 2002
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This movie is a remake of Ozerov's Angels of Death (highly recommended, available only in original version, so you have to understand Russian).
For Westerners trying to make a "Russian movie", this is a great success. Beautiful acting, although I did not like Khruschev (he looked different and was not vicious as portrayed by Hoskins).

4.0 out of 5 stars Too expensive, too voluminous, a bit boring, not great., May 16, 2002
It is not easy to write a good histology book. Most histologists are not pathologists, and do not know a bit about real histology. These guys are M.D.'s, but because there many of them, the book is not a great success. E.g. there is no Toker cell, try to find a Merkel cell (not in the index, present in text).

Somebody is selling top British defense secrets to the enemy. The talented British agent Steed contacts the double-agent barber. They whisper, but not quiet enough. The barber is killed. The list of potential traitors includes three high ranking officers. They have weaknesses: drunkeness (leading to headaches), gambling (to the extent of neglecting official duties), and womanizing. They also have butlers. Steed decides to join a butling (gentlemen's) school. The action becomes more heated with Mrs. Peel joining the force as an officer's girlfriend. At the end Steed and Mrs. Peel are saved by a retired, senile, patriotic, but not really demented general.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent religious music, May 12, 2002
The "Svetoslav Obretenov" choir, directed by Gueorgui Robev, recorded in the Saint Alexander Nevsky basilica in Sofia,
Bulgaria, in 1970.
If you want to get some understanding of Slavonic (Orthodox) Lithurgy, listen to this. Almost out of this world!
