King and Maxwell
King and Maxwell

3.0 out of 5 stars A good solid read., August 21, 2014

This review is from: King and Maxwell (Kindle Edition)
The characters have excellent development and interaction across a longer time line than just this novel. With both likable and negative traits. You can identify with the lead characters inner worlds, and how they deal with the tension between themselves and the secondary characters in the story world.
Humor seriousness and mystery compete for primacy, but the lead characters personalities drives the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intrigue in Bangkok at night and day; A world unlike most anywhere else., December 8, 2013
This review is from: Bangkok Cowboy (Kindle Edition)
An engrossing story of the Bangkok underbelly, as told by a world weary PI with a hardboiled attitude, good instincts, and a big heart when it best applies. Great characters all around, both lightly drawn supporting players, with just enough depth to be understood for their roll, and easily forgotten after they've played their part, and others more deeply drawn into their worlds. All with pluses and minuses, who's personalities all play a part in the final denouement.

As with the city it is placed in, sexuality simmers frothily on a sea of convenience, desire, and inescapable internal needs, that take no mind of more staid conventions. The story covers huge swaths of the city and it's characters of all persuasions. McMillan illuminates them with with deft strokes, and accurate background information on their milieus that rings true for anyone familiar with Bangkok's under-currents. Detail that doesn't overwhelm the story telling.

A good travel read, or something to snuggle with on a cold night,
as the winds howl and you wish you were in somewhere steamy, with company just as warm.

5.0 out of 5 stars For lovers of the golden age of sail, October 29, 2010

Anyone who knows old wooden sailing boats knows the name 'Captain Nat Herreshoff'.
He was one of the greatest designers of America's cup winners and of classic yachts who's designs stand the test of time for sailing pleasure craft. My family has own a Herreshoff designed boat for generations, but this book told me things I never knew about the man, his company, family and those he interacted with. A great read with historical references far afield of just the boat builder/designer. Well worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars great music, October 29, 2010

A fine album by a family act that are total pros, and nicely recorded.
The Issacs mean what they sing about, and they sing gospel.
But it is fine music whether you are regular church goer,
or just a music fan liking nice clean and enjoyable music
in the gospel style.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid & safe machine, October 29, 2010

I have neck/back disc issues, and wanted to let gravity do some of the work to help repair it. I looked at dozens of possibilities. This one is the best combination of controlled and gentle, smooth progress to inversion. The machine is well made, and handles my weight easily, a definite concern for me.

I imported it to Thailand, because I couldn't find anything like this.
I had to have a friend in USA reship it. [...] aprox. purchased and shipped to Boston. Another [...] aprox. got it here, plus [...] aprox. for import duties.

Total cost to my door +- [...]
I am still happy with this machine even at that price.
I haven't seen any Inversion system that is as good a combination of
safe for large persons, and gentle enough for use with injured disks.

Maybe not every single OpAmp in existance here,
but Walt Jung is the man for this stuff, no questions,
clear format, and way to grasp the differences If you have
the basic background in electronics, then this book should
give you most all that you would need to know on OpAmps.

5.0 out of 5 stars For all who follow the history of yacht racing, March 7, 2010

A well written book, a great story of international scope,
with characters out of a fairytale in some instances,
and others solidly grounded in the here and now,
practical nuts and bolts, of boat building in those days.
And a David and Goliath story in both directions.

A great read for anyone who loves wooden boats,
or the oldest sporting challenge cup in the world.

3.0 out of 5 stars Classic old school blues rock, March 7, 2010

Listened to it once so far, sounds like them both,
with a bit more gravel in the voices and a bit less volume on the amps.
Much of it original music, but some chestnuts from both past careers.
If you liked them before, you'll enjoy their current maturity, and darker tonalities.
They can both still rock the blues when they want too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little known, but excelent movie with great piano playing an characters., November 5, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Imagine a child who was born on a ship, in 1900, and never set foot on land in his life, yet learns to be a world class jazz piano player from listening to a few scratchy 78 records brought on board by passengers and crew. This is the oddball life of "1900", the title character, played very well by Tim Roth. He becomes a word of mouth draw for transatlantic travelers, such that even the self-described 'worlds greatest piano player' AKA Jelly Roll Morton, must come and see him...just to KNOW who's best.

Challenged by 1900's abilities, they have a 'cutting session',
each in turn trying to beat the other, and...
well you can find out how this ends. I ain't tellin'!

It is wonderfully shot and narrated, and one of my favorite movies,
with music as central but not over-ridding the personal story.

A movie I have long tried to get here in Thailand, and had to send
a Euro zone 2 cd to my sister to send to me. But I liked this movie enough to do that just to see it again.
