This review is from: Lady Windermere's Fan (1925) (DVD)
I have seen this film, almost a masterpiece, years ago in the Madrid Filmoteca, and I have just bought this DVD, released by the studio SYNERGY (???). It is a very truncated and damaged edition. How do they dare to release such awful thing? DONT'BUY IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Garlan and Rooney were wonderful., January 9, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Yes, Garland and Rooney were wonderful. The plots of these films are a little trite and boring, but who cares?. Here are "La Conga", "Hoe down" and "I got Rythm", with Busby Berkeley at his very best, and a lot of marvelosus songs by Judy Garland twenty years old and at her peak: "Nobody", "But no for me", "How about you?", "Our love affair", "Embraceable you", "I cried for you", "Strike up the band", etc. Someone greater than her in the american show bussiness?

3.0 out of 5 stars Fine, but not as good as "Divorce italian style"., January 9, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A good film. Very good acting of the whole cast and very good cinematography, the white houses and the black dresses, etc., but a little too much overblown and overwritten. The "message" is sometimes not very subtle (the "carabineri" putting his hand over the map of Sicily an shaking his head, the nightmares of Sandrelli, etc.). Besides, there is no Mastroianni.

2.0 out of 5 stars Beware! Only 70 min., August 29, 2008
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Most silent films, damaged by the course of the time, exist in different versions of different running time, but when a DVD is released is supossed to be the most complete version existing (for instance, the Flicker Alley DVD of "La roue").

Well, this is not the case with the Kino "The outlaw and his wife" (price: 27 $ !). This is a very truncated version and shouldn't have been released in such conditions. Its running time is only 70 min., when nowadays exists a version of 105 min. that I have seen four or five years ago in the Madrid Filmoteca and in the french TV channel Arte.

The truncated Kino DVD version is, I suppose, the existing in the Kino shelves and released in VHS many years ago. That's very bad !

Not to speak of the nasty tinted of "Terje Vigen" in the companion DVD, that destroys the range of grey light and shadow of the original.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gance was great, and "La roue" is his best film, June 9, 2008
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: La Roue (DVD)
Gance's films were eclipsed during decades for "Napoleon", the best know of them. At last, here we have "La roue", one of the most towering achievments in the art of silent movies, in my opinion the equal only to some films of Griffith or Stroheim.
Thanks, Flicker Alley. I am waiting for other Gance films: "J'accuse" (promised for next month) and "La dixieme simphonie" (when this one?).

4.0 out of 5 stars Four Lubitsch films., March 31, 2008
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
"Smiling lieutenant" is a masterwork (10/10),a film at the same level than "Trouble in paradise", "Heaven can wait" or "Cluny Brown". These are my favourite Lubitsch.
"One hour with you" is perhaps not at the same level, but also very good (9/10).
The other two films in the pack are minor ("Love parade") or very minor ("Montecarlo") Lubitsch.

Perhaps not the best Murnau film, but surely the best edition of a

silent film I have ever seen. Wonderful!
