5.0 out of 5 stars Plain and deep guide to finding love and openness., February 16, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A fantastic look, by an American Zen monk, at an ancient Tibetan system for cultivating kindness. A very practical, useful, and deep guide. Just one of the best spiritual books I've ever read, hands down. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A phenomenal third album from the San Francisco boy-girl duo, February 22, 2012
This review is from: Fly South (Audio CD)
Ramon & Jessica, a boy-girl duo from San Francisco, write deceptively simple songs on the edge of folk and pop. On their exquisite early albums, Ramon & Jessica and Handyman's Honeymoon, violinist Dina Maccabee and multi-instrumentalist Jesse Olsen achieved an uncanny lockstep with sophisticated harmonies, bold arrangements and subtle lyrics. Then Jesse moved to the desert, forcing the pair to conspire at a distance. With their third album Fly South, the newly reunited pair have produced their closest collaboration yet, working their signature toy piano and Casio keyboards into a rich texture provided by a number of the Bay Area's finest musicians. Whether they are singing about love, death, the weather--or nothing at all--Ramon & Jessica will disarm your heart, and delight your mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars a moving and thoughtful examination of a neglected subject, August 23, 2010
This is an incredible book. For starters, it's THE definitive cultural history of pain. It includes fascinating excursions into the medicine, history, religion, literature, and psychology of pain. It's got cutting edge reporting from the frontiers of neuroscience. It's also a moving personal account of living with chronic pain, and a sustained and convincing argument for taking chronic pain seriously as a disease. The author's view of pain is nuanced, pragmatic, and deeply humane. She takes an elusive subject and treats it with clarity, diligence and humor. Pain springs eternal. I'll be keeping this book at hand for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional debut, April 28, 2010
A powerful first book of poems, taking an exceptionally wide range of forms and subjects, with plainspoken charm and dense wordplay. A very promising debut for a poet of any age!
