3.0 out of 5 stars Good...but, May 22, 2014

It's nice to have these recipes, but there is something missing. Sometimes there is an ingredient mentioned in the directions for preparation that is not listed in the list of ingredients.. so how much of the elusive substance? Usually I can figure it out. But it would be nice to have them complete.

This is a very cute, wise story, very Dickens. I read it originally a half century ago, and was delighted to find it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful classic, beautifully read, December 25, 2011

I have just, on Christmas Eve, given myself the gift of hearing this beautiful, classic Charles Dickens tale Great Expectations performed by the master narrator, Simon Prebble. As all of Dickens' tales do, this provides a look at life for the ordinary man in that time and place, England in the 19th century. It is also a parable about the worth of people as judged by their wealth, status and power vs. their character and more. It is filled with wonderful character studies that only Dickens could do: Miss Haversham, stunted and destroyed by her bitterness, in turn doing great damage to the beautiful, cold Estella. The star of the novel, the orphaned Pip, raised by his shrewish and abusive sister and her wonderful, loving and simple husband Joe, the friends Pip makes, etc. Mr. Prebble reads this great novel as no one else can. He brings the characters to life so I could feel their emotions. All of the characters had unique voices and suitable accents that matched them perfectly. I was particularly moved by his portrayal of Joe. By the way, Mr. Prebble's beautiful, very masculine voice does the female characters believably. One does not even think about it. Thank you, Mr. Prebble, for narrating this novel and providing me with the best Christmas I've had for a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars The audio book narrated by Simon Prebble is ideal, June 16, 2010

The Pickwick Papers

This wonderful unabridged classic delight sounds in the audio performance by Simon Prebble as if Charles Dickens wrote it almost 200 years ago in the hopes that eventually Mr. Prebble would be here to perform it! He so brings it to life, that no one has to find it dense or difficult. It is funny, wise, touching and in one instance sad. Many times the listener will exclaim "Right! Exactly!" As situations from the early 19th Century strike one as humerously apt in today's world. The characters are all instantly recognizable and their voices are perfect for the personalities. I am most grateful that the extremely talented Mr. Prebble gave us an audio to which I will listen repeatedly and which I have already recommended to others. A true classic and a truly classic performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good - especially as performed in the audio book, October 27, 2007
This review is from: Stolen Magic (Audio CD)
Starting from a basic story line which sounds as described to be ridiculous, a "guardian" read magician good guy, runs afoul of a bad guy magician and gets turned in to a unicorn and captured. A virginal young woman, apparantly ugly and dim-witted, rescues him and runs away riding him. Needless to say she is ensourcelled. She manages to turn him human again, he frees her from her spell, revealing her as bright, talented and beautiful. But he is still turns back to a unicorn at times and they both are still at risk of recapture. Romance develops but she must remain a virgin, right? Actually this is well written, suspenseful and full of plot as the two battle the villain. There is plenty of mystery, and plenty of magic as well.

I particularly enjoyed the fabulous Mr. Prebble's voices! I thought the villain's voice about the best villain I have ever heard. The female voices were excellent as were all the regional accents. Especially remarkable were the scenes with one voice after another calling out, crowd scenes, each voice different, varying in regional accent as well as voice tone and texture. Needless to say his conveyance of emotion, such as in the sisters' reunion scene, and the suspenseful scenes, was movingly effective.
