1.0 out of 5 stars I Returned My Copy!!!, November 19, 2005
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought the 50th Anniversary 2-DVD of Oklahoma! After reading all the scathing reviews concerning the horrible quality of the Todd-AO version on disc two (which I happen to believe), I have returned my unopened copy.
Releasing a DVD of such inferior quality, especially of such a beloved classic, is simply inexcusable. I hope that Fox gets a ton of complaints and suffers where it REALLY will hurt them, in both their profits and credibility. For Fox to knowingly distribute such a poor product is disgraceful, and ALL consumers should voice their opinions VERY STRONGLY. Otherwise this kind of garbage will go unchecked. I only wish I knew where to contact Fox with my comments. Anybody know? Thanks.

BTW, if you've never seen Oklahoma!, it's a beautiful movie musical adapted from it's origins on Broadway. The songs are all classics, and include "Oh What a Beautiful Mornin'", "The Surrey With The Fringe On Top", and "Oklahoma!" The sweet love story from a bygone era (just before Oklahoma became a state), centers around a cowboy, his sweetheart, and the man who trys to come between them. There are plenty of laughs, dance, song, and drama, along with a stunning dream ballet sequence. It deserves a much better treatment than what it's getting in this 50th Anniversary Edition. I understand that the CinemaScope version on disc one is fine. Small consolation.

P.S. To add further insult, Fox now adds a disgusting Anti-Piracy/Copy commercial on their currently produced DVDs that REALLY should be aired on TV or mentioned in the newspapers! These ads DON'T belong on DVDs that HONEST consumers are purchasing...after all, THEY ARE NOT THE CRIMINALS!!!! Another moronic move by Fox.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!, November 3, 2005
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Todd Crow provides a bravura recording of the Liszt piano transcription of Berlioz' "Symphonie Fantastique". Hard to believe that only one pianist is playing! If you love this Berlioz masterwork in it's orchestral version, you'll be blown away by this CD. Todd Crow is a virtuoso pianist and brings out every nuance of Berlioz' incredible score. There are other piano versions available, but this one is tops. Grab it and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but...., November 1, 2005
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I agree with the other reviewer concerning the merits of pianist Melvyn Tan performing the complete Beethoven piano concerti accompanied by Sir Roger Norrington and the London Classical Players. My only reservation is that his fortepiano is overwhelmed by the orchestral accompaniment most of the time. It just seems jarring to hear tinkling notes emitting from Tan's fortepiano only to be answered with gale-force volume blasting from the orchestra in return. Perhaps if smaller orchestral forces had been used along with some restraint, or better miking of the soloist, I would have awarded this set 5 stars. Still, since fortepiano renditions of these masterworks are rare, this is a valuable and worthy edition to any music library. BTW, the horrid photo on the CD Box cover is really a turnoff. Surely, a better choice could have been made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, November 1, 2005
Pianist Bronfman and conductor Zinman team up and deliver an outstanding recording of the Beethoven 3rd and 4th piano concertos. From the very opening measures of piano concerto #3 one realizes that this CD is going to be something special. Not only is the pianist great, but so is the orchestral accompaniment. Of the five piano concertos that Beethoven wrote, only his third was written in a minor key and it is awesome! It ranks along side his 3rd (Eroica) and 5th symphonies as one of his most passionate and outstanding compositions. I love all five of Beethoven's piano concertos, but the third is my favorite. The coupling of concerto #4 is also very fine. Here Beethoven is at his most lyrical, with a beautiful second movement. It is very obvious that both the pianist and orchestra are in sync in every way and relishing every moment. At a bargain price this is one CD that should not be missed!

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB!!!!, October 11, 2005
I happen to own at least 15 recordings of Berlioz' "Symphonie Fantastique" and most are very good to excellent (the Norrington, Gardiner, and Davis versions are especially fine). However, the Paul Paray/Detroit Symphony version on Mercury Living Presence, newly released as a SACD, is simply unsurpassed. The excitement that this ensemble produces is beyond what mere words can describe. The music ignites sparks. Every movement is a joy, played with precision and passion. One truly hears and feels the unbalanced nature of the artist that Berlioz is portraying in his five movement masterpiece, which was way ahead of it's time when written. Even today it sounds modern and fresh. I especially like the second movement portraying a Ball, fourth movement portraying a March to the Scaffold, and the final movement portraying a Witches Sabbath (you'll never hear the E-Flat clarinet entry solo played any better than here.) But then again, the entire symphony is wonderful. With the Hungarian March, Trojan March, Corsair and Roman Carnival overtures included on the SACD, this is a superb value. If I could only own one recording of the Symphonie Fantastique, this would be the one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paul Paray/Detroit To The Finish Line......., September 28, 2005
If Paul Paray was a race horse, I'd place my bet on him each time to win...and indeed I would. This former conductor of the Detroit Symphony has the "Midas Touch", for everything he touches turns to gold. This SACD of Chabrier and Roussel is no exception, and belongs in everyone's musical library. No matter how many other recordings of these pieces you own...these renditions are essential. If the only Chabrier work you know is "Espana", you are in for a real treat, as all his music is tunefully delightful. The Roussel "Suite in F" is a nice constrast in musical styles. Consistently, each Paray/Detroit recording is a gala event. The pieces contained on this SACD are all very familiar to me, and yet it's as though I'm hearing them through a different set of ears. Conductor Paray brings out orchestral nuances like few other conductors can. Each work is played with energy, finesse, impeccable interpretation, and with extraordinary sound, which is a Mercury Living Presence trademark. Do yourself a favor, anything that Paul Paray and the Detroit Symphony have recorded...BUY!!! I have not lost a race yet. Very Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical, September 27, 2005
I received an advance copy of the "Cinderella 2 Disc Platinum Edition", which I greatly appreciate. "Magical" is the best word to describe this DVD release, available October 4, 2005. The VHS, which until this "first time ever" DVD release, was the only available format (out of print for some time) and pales in comparison. The restoration of both the Technicolor and sound is very apparent and beautifully done. The picture is sharp and the colors are vivid; they literally jump out at you. I was amazed. It's difficult to believe that this animated classic was made in 1950. I find it pointless to give a synopsis of this well-known story, but I'd rather commend the efforts of the Walt Disney Studio for producing a DVD which is worthy of a great Animation Studio. Earlier DVD efforts, such as "Pinocchio" and "Dumbo" were dismal. They were slapped together without the benefit of video/audio re-mastering or any extra materials. Disney has finally woke up and is giving their loyal consumers great DVDs by re-releasing their animated classics with Special Platinum Editions. "Lady and the Tramp" is scheduled for the Platinum treatment in February 2006, hope more will follow. The supplemental materials are plentiful and excellent, adding hours of further enjoyment. Highly Recommended.
