3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre results, at best, July 1, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Using this Norelco shaver reminded me why I stay away from electric shavers. The shaver feels good enough in the hand, has a nice design and the heads/blades are easy to take off, clean, etc. The problems, unfortunately, begin when you start shaving. Even on relatively easy surfaces (cheeks) you will not get a close shave (either dry or wet), even with multiple passes the end result is slight stubble with and against the grain. Worse performance can be expected on more contoured areas (chin, above and below your lips, along your neck, pretty much anywhere but on your cheeks) where you'll need to pass numerous times to get something close to a shave and even then it'll be uneven. I tried the shaver on both dry and wet skin and the results were more or less the same. The shaver in general just doesn't seem put together well enough, doesn't perform well enough, nor does it offer a shave that rivals the closeness of a safety razor. I definitely wouldn't pay the asking price.

I really want to give this trash can five stars but I think it's a little overpriced for what you're getting. It's a good trash can, without a doubt, you get a wide rectangular opening and a wide step for opening the can, making the process easy enough. The trash bags are easy to change and the top closes slowly. There are pretty much two pieces and you put the top on the can itself, it'll snap into place, and you're done. But the 'plastic' look somewhat cheapens the whole feel of this can. The stainless steel version goes for $100 more but looks that much better (not totally sure I'd be willing to spend that much). Good quality trash can but it somewhat suffers in the 'looks' department.

Nice but not great. Easy to put together and performs well enough if you need a reading light by your bed or on a work desk. The magnifying power is limited as is the area of the glass you're working under and I fear there'll be a lot of fatigue if you work under these conditions for extended periods of time. The light itself is good but it won't light up an entire room, in some ways it's also limited if you're working in the dark or at night. The price point is somewhat reflective of what you're getting.

3.0 out of 5 stars EAS 100% Whey Protein, June 27, 2015

I use protein shakes at least five times a week after working out. At the moment I'm using Dymatize Nutrition Elite Whey Protein Powder which has the best taste, better than this EAS Whey Protein. Comparing the two, servings per 8oz of water, EAS has 150 calories, 26g of protein, 170mg of sodium and 80mg cholesterol with an additional 2g of sugar and fat each. The Dymatize has 117 calories, 24g of protein, 90mg of sodium, 15mg cholesterol and 2g of fat and 0 sugars. Although the EAS has 2g more protein, it fails in every other category aside from fat when compared to Dymatize. And Dymatize tastes better. I'd recommend that company/product (Cafe Mocha being my favorite) for those interested in a good protein powder.

The product itself is a good idea, well made, and aesthetically fits very well in a modern bathroom. What i don't like is the fact that you need to pay extra for the hoses and shower heads that you'll need to use with this shower column. most likely you won't want to use whatever you had before and will wind up spending even more money on Kohler products. If you're OK with that, then this is a very nice addition to your shower and giving you the ability to use a handshower and a 'rain showerhead' (at least that's what I'd go for). Installation is the only thing you really have to worry about, make sure you're able to drill holes where they are needed and you're set. In general I'm a fan of Kohler products and this one didn't disappoint.

Stalingrad: The City that Defeated the Third Reich
Stalingrad: The City that Defeated the Third Reich

Jochen Hellbeck's "Stalingrad" is a testament to how much we still don't know about the Eastern Front over 70 years after the war has ended. Within the Soviet Union a historical commission was created to chronicle the struggles of the Red Army and the Soviet Union during the war years, to create a history that well enough encompassed the courageous actions of men and women in the face of an enemy that few others were able to withstand, less so achieve victories against. Unfortunately, while much information was gathered by the historians of this commission, little of this rich material ever saw the light of day. Hellbeck, however, was given the ability and funding to be able to take numerous interviews from survivors of the Stalingrad battle and weave a compelling narrative about the endurance of the Red Army and the fighting for the city that bore Stalin's name. In many ways Stalingrad became a turning point in the war against Nazi Germany and while initially numerous Soviet publications appeared on the battle, including memoirs, readers must keep in mind (and many already know) that much of that literature was tainted by Soviet propaganda, rhetoric, and adhered to the whims of Soviet censors. Those histories and memoirs that appeared in the post-Soviet period are recollections that without doubt have been influenced by time (not to say that they should be dismissed, but simply treated with an understanding of their weaknesses and limitations). Thus, a work that encompasses written interviews with survivors of the battle mere days or weeks after the fact offer many advantages for those interested in this period and these events. Of course these accounts are tinged with ideology and Socialist cliches, but they are also rather candid about topics like German prisoners of war, cowardly behavior by some Red Army commanders, commissars and soldiers, as well Hellbeck offers a large number of endnotes that help guide the reader through many of the actions, units, and locations that are mentioned and also helps to showcase where readers can find discrepancies in accounts by the likes of Chuikov and Rodimtsev. Without a doubt this is a fascinating look at the Red Army and its struggle against the Germans at Stalingrad, the fierce nature of the fighting comes through these interviews on a regular basis and some of the descriptions of the courage and loyalty shown by Red Army troops are truly inspiring. This is a needed addition to Eastern Front literature and I can only hope that this rich archive is further explored and utilized by historians in the near future.

KitchenAid KKFMA11CA Professional Series 11 Piece Cutlery Set, Candy Apple Red
KitchenAid KKFMA11CA Professional Series 11 Piece Cutlery Set, Candy Apple Red

4.0 out of 5 stars KitchenAid Cutlery Set, June 22, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I've used a few different types of knives in my kitchen. My first foray into more professional and better quality knives was a Wusthof set I purchased around 8 years ago. Eventually I saw that while the Wusthofs were good, there were much better alternatives, although the cost would increase. But I'm happy to pay a premium, or hunt for good sales, if the item is worth it. Thus I turned to Shun knives and have never looked back. This KitchenAid set reminds me of my Wusthof knives, and rightly so since it is German steel that these are made of. The handles even resemble their German counterparts. And in many respects the quality matches up to what I've experienced previously. Thus, this KitchenAid is a good 'starting' set for someone looking to get into a good cutlery set but there are much better alternatives out there. You get a lot with this set, aside from a very hefty block to hold your knives you also have shears and a honing steel. Quality wise, as mentioned, the knives are good, especially when they're new, but I doubt they will last as long as others (I already had one Wusthof knife have its handle break in two, while the Shun have given me absolutely no issues whatsoever). Not sure as of yet what the price point is, but I wouldn't pay over $100-$125 for this type of set.

Asking price (over $20) is too much. It's a nice planner but nothing special. You've got a three year reference guide in the front (2015, 2016, 2017), each month takes up two pages with the left page having a minor lined section cut out all the way on the left for some notes, each month has its own tab and at the end you've got some pages for 'future planing' that goes through 2017 and some pages for general notes, finally there's a holiday list at the end. As I said, it's nice, the cover and back are sturdy, but the asking price seems too much for what you're getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pre de Provence No. 63 Men's Shower Gel, June 17, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I use shower gels daily and they're mainly of the average variety (Irish Spring, Dove, Bath & Body Works, or whatever I can find around the house that I stocked up on previously). Most shower gels smell fine, usually I find they lean on the feminine side in terms of scent or they're of the 'clean' (fresh laundry, fresh cut grass, etc.) variety. But this No. 63 shower gel is great! Fresh citrus scent up top that reminds me of classic men's colognes and a nice warm, sweet base that barely lingers on your skin after the shower is done. I doubt I'm going to use this as a shampoo as I use a conditioner anyway so the scent won't really last. The asking price is a bit on the high side, but this is one of those products that I like enough that I'd be willing to pay the asking price in the future, and it gives me a good excuse to explore the rest of the line. Overall, this is a really nice product that I'd happily recommend.

I'm not crazy about the rose scent in this soap but it's nice. The soap lathers well, washes off quickly and leaves your hands feeling soft and clean. On my skin the scent lingers but isn't overpowering, although my entire bathroom now carries the scent of this soap. Says something about the quality I'd say, I've never experienced anything of the sort from any other soap(s). Very nice soap for a good price.
