30 Events That Shaped the Church: Learning from Scandal, Intrigue, War, and Revival
30 Events That Shaped the Church: Learning from Scandal, Intrigue, War, and Revival
by Alton Gansky
Edition: Paperback
Price: $14.21
73 used & new from $9.89

5.0 out of 5 stars What a unique juxtaposition!, February 11, 2015
A storytelling novelist, Alton Gansky writes about a normally dry and boring topic: church history. The combination makes for a highly engaging readable book. As Gansky says in the introduction, this book is a companion book to 60 People Who Shaped the Church. "In this book, I focused on events that continue to shape our Christian behavior and thinking." (Page 10) The writing is lively and keeps readers turning pages. It is a fascinating overview of church history. I highly recommend this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Life from an Author Committed to Reading, February 7, 2015
This review is from: My Reading Life (Audio CD)
I listened to the full audio book version and enjoyed it. Bestselling novelist Pat Conroy has had an amazing life reading books and writing books. He has been consistently reading 120 pages a day since he was in high school. I learned a great deal and found it worthwhile listening. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Read, February 3, 2015
Alex Stone is an interesting storyteller. I had no idea of the connection between magic and physics until reading this book. It held my attention for the entire book--until toward then end where he went into detail about his creation of magic tricks (lost me). I enjoyed the reading experience. If you have any interest in magic, mentalists and the hidden power of the mind, you will want to read this volume.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Little Light-Weight on Actual Content, January 28, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
One of my long-term friends in publishing recommended this book so I bought it and read it cover to cover. It does cover the basic steps of publishing and have some good points. It emphasizes the need to have a completely proofread book, the need to have a good editor and also to have a high quality title and cover design--which I appreciate after seeing many poor quality self-published books. The lack in this book is the slim emphasis on marketing and promotion. Yes marketing and promotion is one of the ten steps but needed to be greatly expanded for the book to have a higher rating and recommendation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read This Book to Open Your Eyes to Miracles in Your Life, January 27, 2015
Susie Jennings has had an extraordinary life. In this highly engaging book, you will quickly discover her life has not been without tragedy. Yet Susie has learned not to see difficulties as problems but challenges for God to overcome. Each chapter will help you gain fresh clarity for your own life. The book is organized into five sections: Miracles of God's Promises and Plans, Miracles of Answered Prayers, Miracles of God's Perfect Timing, Miracles of Obedience and Miracles of God's Provision.

Through the excellent writing of Allison Bottke, you will be challenged in your own spiritual journey. Whether you read the book cover to cover or use it as a daily devotional, 31 DAYS OF MOUNTAINTOP MIRACLES is worth reading and highly recommended.

This review is from: The Third Target (Hardcover)
Joel C. Rosenberg has done it again. THE THIRD TARGET grips readers from the opening pages. I stayed up late last night and kept reading until the final page. Yes everyone was relatively safe when I reached the last page but it left me eager to read the next book in this fascinating series. I highly recommend this remarkable story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Loved the Writing / Disappointed with the Book Production, January 8, 2015
For over 50 years, Marty Sklar was one of the insiders of the Walt Disney Company. This memoir is filled with insights and fun stories but tremendous insights for every reader.

I loved the personal stories and the detailed insights into the Disney culture. As Sklar writes, "I am proud to say that because my Disney career began at Disneyland one month before the park business began, I retired in 2009 as the only case member to have participated in the opening of all eleven Disney parks around the world." (Page 285) This book is filled with insights such as "In a Disney park, not only is storytelling 'the thing'--everything tells a story." (Page 286)

I enjoyed reading DREAM IT! DO IT! and recommend this engaging memoir.

As you can see from my words above, I liked this book and gave it high praise. Here is the disconnect on this book that a high class outfit like Disney missed. The book is a beautiful hardcover with full color photos and well-written. Yet it violates the basics of book production and uses a san serif font typeface--which is never done--except maybe some newbie who self-publishes their book. San serif type is hard to read. Just take down the books on a random shelf and see how many books you find with the san serif type. I would expect zero. It is simply not done. That is the reason I downgraded the rating on this book.
