Ten Dirty Pigs, Ten Clean Pigs
Ten Dirty Pigs, Ten Clean Pigs
by Carol Roth

4.0 out of 5 stars Clever Counting Book, October 2, 2006
Here's a cute concept for a counting book. My three year old loves turning the book upside down for the second story. And the catchy rhymes are easy to remember- after a few reads, you can recite from across the room while your little one "reads". The illustrations are colorful as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars If Dr Seuss made silent horror films..., May 27, 2006
This is certainly one of the most interesting silent films of the time period. Unusual story line, beautiful use of light and shadows and very artistic sets all askew as if from a Dr Seuss illustration. Whether you are into German Expressionism or not, this is an entertaining movie to watch. The score for this edition was absolutely horrid- synthesizer and electric guitar-that does not go with the movie at all. After muting the sound the movie was great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Children's DVD, March 8, 2006
This review is from: Good Night Maisy (DVD)
My 2 1/2 year old loves this DVD. There's a lot here to watch, so we usually just show one episode, then he begs to see more. There are three episodes with the usual short stories around a main theme. My son's favorite is the Goodnight Maisy- with the bedtime routines and night time stories, but there are also Spring time and Winter episodes that are equally as cute. The stories are interspersed with catchy songs. A great DVD to take along on a trip or leave with the babysitter.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lacking his usual charisma, March 8, 2006
Herman Cain brings up some of the most important issues that both political parties seem to be dodging- social security, Medicare and income taxes. His background in business gives him a different perspective on these issues, and his suggestions are very practical and common sense. It is always such a treat to hear him on the radio, but this book is lacking the charm and charisma that he radiates. While the message is good, the book tends to be repetitive to the point that I began to get bored.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Introduction to Pastels, January 20, 2006
This book is full of beautiful photos of pastel drawings in different styles and using a variety of techniques. There is plenty of information on selecting pastels, properties of different hardnesses of pastels on different textured papers, blending techniques, storage and care of materials. Techniques are illustrated step by step with plenty of photos to clarify the instructions. Overall a good book for the pastel novice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book of Mexican Folk Art, January 20, 2006
This is a lovely and well made book that features a wide variety of folk art- weaving and fiber arts, carving, painting, ceramics, tin work, etc. It provides a great introduction to different media and styles. The work is almost all very traditional. The book is divided by media, then each page features a large photo of the artist in their studio/home and a description of the work. The opposite page has photos of the artwork by that particular artist. Quite a few photos are full page, and this is a large book! This book is attractive enough to be a coffee table book, but informative and accessable enough to be of good use in a classroom.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute cookbook for families to share, August 22, 2005
Sure it's silly, but this cookbook is geared towards children. The recipes are good and for the most part easy. Emeril has included recipes for everything children typically like to eat. Children (even older children) will need adult supervision for most of the recipes. The photos of Emeril at the beginning of each recipe were a bit much. They could have put more photographs of the processes in the place of the cartoony Emeril photos.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting themed art book, August 22, 2005
This review is from: Dog in Art (Hardcover)
This book features photos of artworks from many time periods showing dogs. Most of the artworks are realistic in style. Towards the end, there are a few more modern paintings. I wish the author would have included more modern paintings. Anyway, this is a great book to introduce young children to art appreciation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining cookbook, August 22, 2005
This is not a traditional cookbook, rather a fun explanation of the how and why of cooking. There are some recipes, but the book is more about understanding the whole process. The layout is nice- lots of color illustrations. It is like taking a cooking class but more fun and a lot cheaper. Topics covered include: searing, grilling, frying and braising. A thoroughly entertaining read for anyone who loves to cook.
