1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointing, January 10, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My girlfriend had picked up a very nice Calphalon cook pan at Ross for a great price and she really loves it. I thought I'd get her some more Calphalon cookware for Christmas and bought these pots. The very first time using two of these pots was a disaster. They don't come clean. The cookware film is coming off. One has a white film, the other has a black film. Absolutely do not buy this particular model. They are total crap.

Alan Greenspan: The Age of Turbulence, Unabridged Library Edition
Alan Greenspan: The Age of Turbulence, Unabridged Library Edition
by Alan Greenspan
Edition: Audio CD

4.0 out of 5 stars Would have liked to hear Alan himself do the recording, September 11, 2009
The CD has the complete book unabridged. Alan Greenspan has been an important figure in the US economey over the last 30 years. Insight into his thought process is perhaps the most illuminating feature of this book. The CD case is typical, which means clumsy to use and not too sturdy. The recording is decent, but would have been 1000% more valuable if were actually done by Alan Greenspan himself. Although the reader seemed to grasp all of the information, there is something lost in the intonation that would have been delightfully present had Alan made the recording.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good course for part-time advanced learner, September 11, 2009
This review is from: Using Spanish (Hardcover)
The book is laid out in bilingual format. English on the right and Spanish on the left. Several of the English translations are quite poor, almost non-sensical. The recordings are good. The Spanish is good. Professional speakers from Spain, rather than Latin America. All of the recordings are in Spanish. In total, about 3 hours of dialogs.

I got a better price for Using Spanish at [...].

Why let those many hundreds of hours of Spanish study be slowly forgotten? I use this course as a refresher and listen to it while taking a shower. So currently, it takes no extra time from my day. There was a time when I was studying this course intensely and spent a hundred or more hours on the material. That's good news too, in that the course is not so elementry that it is easily mastered. There is a website called how-to-learn-any-language.com that tells of my journey using this material. Look for luke's learning logs. The journey starts around page 30. There are comments on all the dialogs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Workout Record, September 11, 2009
This review is from: Let It Be (Audio CD)
I have listened to this recording perhaps 2000 times. It is one of the best, most heartfelt, dramatic, moving, teen/coming of age records I've ever heard. I've been listening to it for over 20 years now and it's still fantastic. My favorite by far of all of the Replacement recordings. Although not a live recording, it captures the magic of The Replacements live. I've got an older CD release that has only the original 11 songs from the vinyl release. I'm tempted to update because my workout lasts longer than the 11 song CD.

2.0 out of 5 stars Should perhaps be called "Eat to Get Fat", September 11, 2009
I switched my diet from the traditional bodybuilding diet (lowfat high protein) to the high carboyhdrate low animal protein diet in Eat to Win. Although I'd always been underweight, this book changed that. Unfortunately, even though I was doing heavy weight training, most of the weight I put on was fat. I still have the stretch marks it piled on so fast. I would give this 1 star for that debacle, however, the attention on blood profiles, cholestrol and triglycerides was ahead of the pack, and therefore give it 2.

2.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly wordy, windy and redundant, January 14, 2009
The book includes some discussion of Warren Buffett's investment strategy, but the author repeats the same material over and over and uses questionable analogies and even goes so far as to suggest that his own opinions are perhaps better than Buffett's.

A Few Gripes:
Author talks a lot about diversified portfolio theory. Buffett prefers to pick a few good stocks. The prose surrounding diversified portfolio theory will dull your senses with its redundancy.

Value versus Growth:
Author compares Google, which Buffett never invested in with the Washington Post, which had a similar spectacular rise in value, although over a longer time. The 20/20 hindsight armchair quarterback isn't useful.

The book really sounds like it was written by a middle school student and there was apparently no editor to insist the 220 page book could be done in less than 80 if the redundancies were removed.

Sorry, I don't usually write reviews, but this book is poorly done. I suspect the endorsements it got (not from Amazon readers, but from others) were from people who probably never actually read the book. The 5 star ratings from Amazon readers make me wonder too.

There is a new 2008 edition. Since it has 30 more pages, it's unlikely that the fluff in the first edition was removed.

If you are interested in Warren Buffett's investment philosophy in a more cogent, readable, enjoyable form, check out "The Midas Touch", which is delightful, entertaining, enjoyable, and not painfully redundant. The Midas Touch is a much better choice if you want to study Warren's investment philosophy.

Believe the 1 and 2 star reviews. They speak the truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful for understanding Latino culture, February 21, 2006
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is helpful for understanding Latino culture, even if one is not a Christian. The author is humble and insightful. If one is Christian, I believe this book will help broaden one's understanding of the Bible, although the book isn't a bible study per se.

3.0 out of 5 stars verguenza del ingenero de las grabaciones, February 21, 2006
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Me parece que el ingenero de las grabaciones las manipuló para eliminar pausas dentro de las frases. Asi que, las grabaciones pierden algo dramatico. It seems to me the recording engineer manipulated the recordings to remove the natural pauses a speaker makes for dramatic effect. Also, I think the engineer sped up the voice. I believe the engineer's goal was to make the recordings take less time, which may have saved a few CDs worth of time for the collection. Unfortunately, the removed pauses not only removes some of the drama in the reading, it also makes listening in general a little more tiresome. On the other hand, you can probably hear everything in about 20% less time because of the engineer's efforts. I've occasionally sped up a recording myself if I thought the reader paused too much, but in this case, I think it was done by a computer - something like, "if pause is greater than .2 seconds, make it only .2 seconds". The problem is that a computer is not an artist. Nonetheless, I plan to listen to these recordings a lot, and I believe they will come in handy with the NVI/NIV dual translation bible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Platiquemos is a complete course for speaking Spanish, April 28, 2005
I've tried a several courses and books for learning Spanish. Some promise the easy way. As far as I can tell, there is no easy way. It takes a lot of time and discipline to really learn a foreign language. I'm talking about knowing the language well enough to understand movies, TV, and converse with native speakers. Platiquemos is one of the few courses that can take you from the beginning to the end - fluency. It is an 8 level course.

I bought the download edition from the platiquemos-letstalk website. It has over 47 hours of audio, and 1400 pages of text. You cannot finish the course in 47 hours though. It's really a 600 hour course. You'll need to listen to each lesson several times, and that is a good thing. Some course like Pimsleur offer 50 hours of audio, but you only have to listen to lesson once or twice because they're so easy. In the end, they have about 100 hours of instruction. The U.S. Foreign Service Institute created the course Platiquemos is based upon. They train diplomats and other people to be able to communicate professionally in language languages. They have found it takes about 600 hours to learn Spanish if you have effective materials. They actually created a course to teach people with no previous experience in Spanish to communicate well. This is that course, updated with modern typesetting.

Although you'll be glad you have all the text in the course, 90% of the time, you can study away from the written materials. That's great if you commute. The course will teach you how to read though, so you won't be illiterate when your done. You'll be able to speak, read, and understand Spanish.
