MeasuPro DCT250 Ultra-Fast Instant Read Digital Cooking Thermometer with Timer, Silver
MeasuPro DCT250 Ultra-Fast Instant Read Digital Cooking Thermometer with Timer, Silver
Offered by MeasuRite
Price: $24.99

Five ACCURATE Stars! This MEASUPRO DCT250 wired digital cooking thermometer is a marvelous piece of kitchen technology. It allows the chef to hit the exact degree target either by direct observation during the cooking process or by using the digital timer, both at a distance from the stove or oven. The cooking thermometer is 5 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 3/4 inch deep: it can bend in the middle to allow better viewing of the 1-1/2 inch by 1-3/4 inch LCD screen which displays large easily-read letters and numbers. The screen displays the timer, actual temperature, and target temperature. The timer has a 24 hour maximum period. The device has an 8-1/2 inch bent probe, with 6 straight inches for piercing the food: the bent angle helps stabilize the probe. There is a 3 ft 8 inch long braided stainless steel wire between the probe and the digital thermometer. Use cooking gloves when handling the cooking probe and the braided wire, as both the probe and the wire will be hot. Celsius or Fahrenheit can be displayed.

In testing, the device worked exactly as advertised, both taking the temperature of external food, of food in an oven while it is cooking, and food being boiled in a pot on a stove. With cold foods, the Measupro thermometer went down as low as 33 degrees before displaying "low". Although not tested beyond 350 degrees, it is advertised as capable of measuring foods up to the maximum 392 degrees beyond which the Measupro could be damaged. The device comes with very clear and specific User Manual containing USDA minimal cooking temperature guidelines and other cooking charts for specific types of food. This is an excellent device with 24 hour timer allowing the cook to monitor the temperature of food from over 3 feet away. Minor cons: a carrying pouch and a probe cover would be helpful additions. Highly Recommended. Five EXACT Stars! (MeasuPro DCT250 Ultra-Fast Instant Read Digital Cooking Thermometer with Timer. Braided wire and probe. AAA battery. User manual in English and German. Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This particular V8 Protein Shake comes in a Chocolate Raspberry flavor in a one-serving 10 Fl Oz screw top plastic bottle and it is delicious! This is one of three available flavors. V8 advertises it as a protein shake and it does deliver 12 grams of Protein in a low fat drink. But there are also other benefits: a 1/4 cup of vegetables, along with 3 grams of fat, 0.5 saturated fat, 0 trans fat. It also packs 28 grams of sugar, 34 carbs, 3 grams of fiber, 160 mg of sodium, and 5 mg of cholesterol, and 210 calories.

Beyond this, in a 10 ounce bottle and based on a 2000 calorie daily standard, it has 30% of Vitamins A, D, and C, 15% Vitamins K and B12, 20% foliate and iron, lesser amounts of thiamin, niacin, B6, & riboflavin, and an impressive 40% Calcium. A special point is that it does not contain high fructose corn syrup. The only drawback for some may be the high sugar content, but it gives a delicious protein, sugar and vitamin boost. No refrigeration is needed for storage, but serve chilled and shake before opening. Four HEALTHFUL Stars! (V8 Protein Shakes, Chocolate Raspberry, 10 Fl Oz-1.25 cups. Pack of 24)

Sing a Song of Basie by Lambert, Hendricks & Ross (1992) Audio CD
Sing a Song of Basie by Lambert, Hendricks & Ross (1992) Audio CD
7 used & new from $11.50

Five LANDMARK Songs. "Sing A Song of Basie" captures the legendary vocal trio of Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks, and Annie Ross on their initial 1957 recording that jump-started the 'vocalese' craze in jazz that directly led to groups like the Double Six of Paris, the Swingle Singers, Manhattan Transfer, New York Voices, and continues to this day with many jazz vocal groups. Using the actual Basie arrangements and backed by an all-star Basie rhythm section, master vocalese lyricist Jon Hendricks stepped beyond the scat singing of "Pops" Armstrong, and singular vocalese of Eddie Jefferson and King Pleasure by writing `in context' words to the 'note for note' Basie Band jazz solos, and the actual classic trumpet, trombone, and saxophone section arrangements used by the Count Basie band. The four-part rhythm section consists of Basie stalwarts Sonny Greer on drums, Freddie Green on guitar, and Eddie Jones on bass, along with big band arranger Nat Pierce doing a great Basie imitation on piano. There is some overdubbing here that was not used in later recordings.

The entire recording is marvelous but the 'best of the best' begins with Memphis Slim's "Everyday", recalling Joe Williams, in a great imitation of the Basie band, the fantastic `call-response' sections of "Two For The Blues" between the 3 singers, Annie Ross anticipating her famous "Twisted" hit of later years with her turn on the opening of "Two O'Clock Jump", "Down for Double" with Ross' wild altissimo trumpet section imitation. The `ringer' here is the Benny Goodman Basie nod "Fiesta in Blue" with some great solo and section work by Ross, Lambert, and Hendricks. Hendricks has a wild solo on "Blues Backstage" and Ross has some stupendous solo work in "Avenue C". As usual, the masterful Dave Lambert spends a lot of crucial time in the background doing 'bottom note' and low-range integrated trio voice work. This recording was a sensation when released and remains a timeless work of musical art that belongs in any comprehensive jazz music collection. My Highest Recommendation. Five HUGE Stars! 5.0 out of 5 stars "LIVE-DIE-REPEAT", INDEED: GREAT TOM CRUISE & EMILY BLUNT SCI-FI FLICK, December 16, 2014
"Live, Die, Repeat" is the Tom Cruise Sci-Fi film that was released as "Edge of Tomorrow" with "Live Die Repeat" as a tag line. In its second life as a DVD and on-demand rental movie from the usual TV and smart gadget outlets, LDR is the main title with EOT becoming the tagline. Cruise continues on his action hero path following his last "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" movie, as well as the crime fighter "Jack Reacher" and the futuristic "Oblivion" movies: all good but not great. But 'Live Die Repeat" is great, featuring Cruise as a non-combat US Army officer, Major William Cage, tasked with providing information and a face (along with the life-sized picturesque poster of Emily Blunt's Rita in full battle gear plastered all over London) to the human-alien conflict but he is put on the front lines against his will. They are fighting a unique & clever alien enemy and in the ensuing battle, Cruise is killed in the initial encounter as shown in the trailers, but somehow comes back to re-live the recent events, over and over. Along the way, we are introduced to Brendan Gleeson's General Brigham, Bill Paxton's Master Sergeant Farell, Emily Blunt's Rita character, the alien enemy and its real intentions, as well as some peculiar traits that affect Cage's perception of time. A really enjoyable SciFi film with some mind-boggling CGI, unique air ships, dangerous weapons, awesome battle gear, and a near perfect ending. Adapted from Hiroshi Sakurazaka's novel "All You Need Is Kill". Highly Recommended! Four and a half MARVELOUS Stars! (Amazon prime video: Time-1 hr and 54 minutes.)

George Jinda & World News
George Jinda & World News

Five APPEALING Stars! This is a great "smooth jazz", adult contemporary music performance by leader, composer and master percussionist George Jinda who is probably best known as the other half of the potent Grammy-nominated duo "Special EFX" along with guitarist and group originator Chieli Minucci: a duo that used occasional musical guests such as McCoy Tyner to fill out their ranks, although Jinda and Minucci performed alone at times to great acclaim. The music is mostly beautiful themes, latin beats, and deeper solo and group performances than the usual smooth jazz background music.

This group is called "George Jinda and World News" and consists of leader Jinda on percussion, Randy Roos on guitar and guitar synthesizers, Szakcsi on acoustic grand piano, and Gerald Veasley on electric bass. Guests include saxophonist Mark Johnson, drummer Lionel Cordew, vocalist Carol Vito, and Gabor Bado on acoustic rhythm guitar.

The 'best of the best' begins with the awesome lilting, latin-tempo "With A Message" that received airplay in Los Angeles back in the day. It features a beautiful main theme and endless vamps by Jinda, Szakcsi and some crucial Veasley moves that allow Szakcsi and Roos to create floating shimmering improvisations. "Springshot" is funky and smooth party music. The marvelous, uptempo "Luscious Rebecca" is dominated by the sound of a marimba but it's probably Roos' guitar synthesizer, with Veasley and Jinda really burning it up in the background. "It Could Have Been You" is a beautiful ballad written by Jinda and Szaksci with Roos and Szaksci creating gorgeous sensitive improvisations. "Mariella" is a beautiful fiery tribute composed by Randy Roos and excellently performed by the group with Szakcsi producing a flute/guitar effect from his synth, riding a 3-note group vamp. There are guest appearances by Johnson, vocalist Vito singing in unison with the instruments, and drummer Cordew on the lilting "Shelia's Caribbean Skirt". Jinda's tribute "For Miles" has Roos' synth imitating Miles' muted trumpet sound amid an eerie bass and percussion musical background. In all, a marvelous deep 'smooth jazz' album recorded in Jinda's native Budapest Hungary and in New York City, with George really cutting loose on his arsenal of percussion instruments in the background and great solo and background performances by the rest of the group. Highly Recommended. Five BLAZING Stars (JVC CD, 9 tracks. Time-47:42. George Jinda left the bandstand much too early in 2001 at age 60. )

5.0 out of 5 stars SINGLE TRACK REVIEW: STEVE KUHN TRIO's AMAZING "THREE WAVES", December 14, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Three Waves (MP3 Music)
Five RELENTLESS Stars! A stunning, relentless uptempo avant garde jazz trio performance led by innovative piano master Steve Kuhn in his debut recording on Contact Records. The rest of the trio is filled out by the resourceful Steve Swallow on double bass and the dynamic drumming of Pete La Roca (Sims). "Three Waves", also the album's title, is composed by Argentinian composer Sergio Mihanovich.

"Three Waves" is a great descriptive title. Kuhn is calling down the huge amounts of musical thunder and lightning from his keyboard, as Swallow's humming bass is like a hurricane gale, and La Roca lashes his drum set like torrential rain, as the musical waves crash on the shore and the next set of waves ramps up the music's intensity. It's hard to imagine where Kuhn and Co got the strength for that last charging crescendo, after the great bass and drum solos. It's an almost exhausting exhilaration for the listener. A "Tour De Force"! Then there is a great rendition of the standard "Never Let Me Go" (2:59), tantalizingly disguised, with chordal hints given until Kuhn is ready to reveal the familiar 5-note theme at the very end. My Highest Recommendation! Five STORMY Stars! (1-MP3 track. Time-6:50)

Smartek® Fabric Defuzzer Cloth Shaver Black Cord/Cordless
Smartek® Fabric Defuzzer Cloth Shaver Black Cord/Cordless
Price: $16.99

Five USEFUL Stars! This Smartek Fabric Defuzzer is an upgrade from those smaller, push on/off button models, being larger than most that I have used over the years at 5 1/2 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 2 3/4 inches high, weighing 7.5 ounces. It fits nicely in the hand with thumb and finger slots on either side (flip it 180 degrees for 'left handed' users). The 'cleaning head' is 2 inches in diameter: twice as larger than most and the head is flatter and does not require the 'rocking motion' of smaller devices. The fuzz collection compartment is a large 3 1/8 inches by 2 5/8 inches by 9/16 inch. Use care in removing the collection compartment, pulling from the center. The motor seems very powerful and caution should be used while gently applying it to any cloth.

In testing, the larger head allowed the shaver to collect more fabric 'lint, pills, and fuzz' making it faster, more efficient, and the rechargeable battery makes it useable on a larger number of items with each charge. The rechargeable battery was able to keep the test unit running continuously for over 3 hours with no overheating noticed. Recharge the unit using the provided AC power cord. Highly Recommended for usefulness and price. Five EFFICIENT Stars! (1 each Smartek® Fabric Defuzzer Cloth Shaver Cord/Cordless, Model ST-41, recharge wall cord with plug, small cleaning brush, and instructions. 4.0 out of 5 stars "DEAD DROP": AN ACTION-PACKED INTERNATIONAL SPY THRILLER, December 13, 2014

Four ADVENTUROUS Stars. "Dead Drop", an enjoyable spy novel by author Raymond Thorn with many intersecting storylines, begins in 2003 with a well-trained CIA surveillance team following a man through the streets of Central District Hong Kong: the results of this caper will come back to haunt the Agency for years. Gabriel Linden has been on the outs with the Agency but gets a chance at redemption using his own resourcefulness. With this backdrop, author Thorn takes the reader on a whirlwind international spy thriller in destinations such as Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Along the way we meet Amira, Shane, Garcia, determined and elusive killers, CIA hi jinks, breathtaking simultaneous pursuits, and many deadly situations. A few minor plot holes and fanciful scenes, but this novel is very interesting, has well-defined characters, and has an unusual, action-packed ending. Very Definitely Recommended. Four COMPELLING Stars. (271 pages reviewed in Kindle text and text-to-speech.)

TBMax "Drums" is an ultra small drum-shaped speaker which weighs 1.3 ounces and can literally disappear into the palm of the hand. It produces good sound in proportion to its size of 1 and 1/2 inches high by 1 and 4/16 inches across. The Drums speaker comes with Bluetooth 2.0 and a 3.5 mm aux input port. In addition, it can receive telephone calls and has a built- in microphone. It can control the transmitting sources functions, but not volume which can be adjusted from the transmitting device. It excels as a personal speaker that could be used on a desk at the office, without spilling sound down the hallway or to adjacent offices or to bedrooms in a home. A female voice verifies configuration with statements such as "Bluetooth!", "Connected!", and such.

In testing, the device paired separately with 2 individual Bluetooth devices over a maximum distance of 35 feet, line of sight: if objects are in between the speaker and transmitting source, the sound sometimes breaks up.

The speaker produces low sound adequate for use 'close to the listener ' in a quiet room and it produces fidelity matching that of the original recorded source. In listening to a test musical track used to evaluate speakers, it produced the required tones. The metal grill of the speaker should be pointed up when in use. If it had more volume capability it would be a great small room speaker, but still not suitable for parties.

The speaker charges up using a lithium battery within 2 hours and plays for up to 8 hours. The aux in port works with 3.5 mm jacks. Always use the provided flat 12 inch USB to micro B cable, because some similar cables will not charge this speaker. The speaker has on/off, play/pause, telephone answer, and changing tracks buttons. The buttons are located on the bottom.

As an excellent personal close-up speaker and for the price, it is Highly Recommended. Four and a half UNIQUE Stars!

Vivaldi: Violin Concertos by Giuliano Carmignola (2013) Audio CD
Vivaldi: Violin Concertos by Giuliano Carmignola (2013) Audio CD

"Vivaldi Con Moto" is the latest Archiv Produktion recording from virtuoso violinist Giuliano Carmignola, the violin master of Baroque music and the perfectionist music of Antonio Vivaldi in particular. He is recorded playing inspired, beautiful versions of Vivaldi concertos which Carmignola ostensibly 'listens to' while driving his motorcycle across Italy. With excellent support from Accademia Bizantina under the baton of maestro Ottavio Dantone, Giuliano presents the glorious world premier of Concerto in F major, RV 283, and original manuscript interpretations of the Concerto in E minor RV 281 and the Concerto in C major RV 187 which shares musical commonality with the opera Griselda. In addition there are marvelous performances of Concerto in D major RV 232, Concerto in E flat major RV 254, and Concerto in D minor RV 243, composed 'sans' the E string (Some versions of this recording also have the Largo movement from Concerto in A major RV 350.) The Vivaldi treasure troves 'unearthed' from sources such as European monastery basements and ancient library boxes continue to yield fresh dazzling music for musicians such as Giuliano Carmignola and Accademia Bizantina by way of the composing genius of the Red Priest for the benefit of the music world. These are great performances from stem to stern. My Highest Recommendation. 5 MASTERFUL Stars! (18 tracks, ~70 minutes. Mr Carmignola plays a 1739 Florenus Guidantus violin.)
