5.0 out of 5 stars a very interesting work, November 12, 2013
a summary of the 'plot' is beyond me -- but, it's a series of vignettes/episodes, rapidly unspooling from the head of a thoughtful, unreliable, decidedly cracked-up narrator, in a written form that bends poetry into prose, into other things still-more-unexplainable. cole swenson's translation is very good also.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Kind of Personal Essay, July 8, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
a fast-moving, very funny kind of personal essay, that describes an elbow-bend in the author's life (one she likens, in an aside of Dorothy Parker-esque self deprecation, to being a fitfully idiosyncratic, more Broadway-infused personal Eat, Pray Love scenario). The unexpected way Shukert unspools her thoughts, and draws connections between her experiences, and simultaneously peppers it all with her huge knowledge of culture, make it a real pleasure to read. It's like being in the presence of an extravagantly gifted conversationalist, or a fiendishly entertaining monologuist, or some other kind of theatrically adroit sleek-talker.

Quoting it will show much better what I mean; the piece is full of these gems, and also has longer-form humorous/thematic effects that are a pleasure to encounter.

"It was a whole new world. I felt like the part of the movies where the newspapers start spinning and you see me, in clothing of increasing elegance, going from burlesque to vaudeville to the Ziegfeld Follies, and then at the end I'm famous and can finally live the ultimate show biz dream of drinking myself to death in a giant art deco penthouse high in the twirling sky of the Manhattan night."

"When I awoke, often I would have no memory of what I had written at all, until a smattering of "oh gurl" tweets and perhaps a quote or two would start to trickle over the various feeds that let us know, Ed Koch-style, how we're doing."

"TV recapping is a peculiar discipline that has flourished in our disconnected, hyperconnected, insert-your-own-meaningless-Thomas-Friedman-byword-here age."

"Katherine McPhee, a Japanese body pillow outfitted with its own AutoTune processor sang a lot of Rihanna songs...."

And on it goes. Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mine were duds, September 12, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought three of these batteries to use with my x100. They worked fine for about six months, but then they stopped holding a charge. I tried charging them with the standard x100 charger, then with a generic charger, then with the powerful visualizing technique described in Rhonda Byrne's The Secret-- which actually seemed to work a little before I forgot and stopped doing it...

anyway, I decided, i'm not going down the road to allegedly-Maximal power ever again... instead i have elected to purchase an even less expensive, six-dollar, completely non-branded generic battery, which i'm cautiously hoping will last for a long long while, or at least until the meteor comes

5.0 out of 5 stars the best peanut butter of all time, February 9, 2012
'everything's subjective,' but this peanut butter makes all other peanut butter look like the hot brown mess it comparatively is-- i would buy a 9lb bucket of it, but i have this nightmare about peanut butter becoming sentient and suffocating me in my sleep so probably best not to 'trigger' that whole thing any more than necessary

5.0 out of 5 stars It Makes my Dirty Cats Smell like Clean Babies, October 27, 2009
Giving your Cat a Bath is generally unwise... I try to do it only when there is some dire need (e.g., when my cat conceived an inexorable curiosity about the flip-top garbage can, and ended up falling in). This stuff makes them extremely soft, and when I occasionally use it on them, they end up being quite happy (the actual washing part is pretty harrowing, though). It smells like that Johnson & Johnson "no more tears" baby shampoo. Maybe it is, but with a picture of a kitten on the bottle.

That said, I would not wash your baby with this. Just to be safe.
