My Love for You Is the Sun

5.0 out of 5 stars Tender verse, outstanding illustrations, September 12, 2014
This is a lovely book. Julie Hedlund’s short, tender rhymes assure a baby of his/her mother’s love through comparison with things found in nature: the sun, a tree, a river, rain, wind, snow, the ocean, and a star. The illustrations are photographs of Susan Eaddy’s beautiful and amazingly realistic clay creations, which surely will be a favorite with both young children and adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Short Story Writer's Guide, December 4, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is the best book I’ve found on writing short stories. Much of the instruction also applies to writing novels. Where it does not, the author points out the difference.

With the exception of the last chapter on finding a market, I believe little of the advice is outdated. Timeless guidelines for writing the short story are clearly explained. The author cautions beginning writers against stepping outside those guidelines but gives examples where some accomplished authors have done it successfully.

I have the e-book and have not noticed errors in the digitalization. It would be helpful if the Table of Contents linked to chapters, but the book is so useful that I can live with that flaw. Thank you, BiblioLife, for providing such a valuable service.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heart-Warming Small Town Story, December 3, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
IRS agent Sarah is sent to a small town to uncover unreported taxable bartering. What she finds leaves her questioning her career goals and her relationship with her successful, ladder-climbing boyfriend.

This is a clean, heart-warming, quick read about a small town where people work together for the common good. I liked the people and wouldn’t mind coming from a town like that, or going back to it.

Good and Evil in Afghanistan
Good and Evil in Afghanistan
by Paul Soderberg
Edition: Paperback
Price: $17.95
16 used & new from $17.64

5.0 out of 5 stars Original and Thought Provoking, December 3, 2013
Paul Soderberg is a gifted storyteller who has lived in Afghanistan doing famine-relief work. Using his personal experience with the country and its people, he drew me into scenes so vivid that I felt as if I were there.

The Legend of the Alone Stranger takes place during the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. It is the humorous tale of a man who, after multiple war-related misfortunes, comes to believe he is the Lone Ranger. It has been awhile since he heard stories about the American legend, and the Lone Ranger has become the Alone Stranger in his confused mind. On a white camel, carrying an old flintlock rifle and followed by a trusted companion who wears an eagle feather in his turban, he sets out to fight for justice. I laughed at his adventures, and the ending was so tender it brought tears to my eyes.

The March of the Frozen Martyrs takes place during the American Occupation. It is a compelling tale about 300+ war orphans and abused children who unite to kill the Giants--their name for adults, regardless of nationality or political affiliation. Three pairs of adults set out independently of each other to rescue the hardened, well-armed children. All the characters are brought together with fast-paced, gripping suspense and surprising twists.

Both of the stories were inspired by Afghan legends. Rays of compassion, hope, and love gleam amid the carnage of lives that have been devastated by Afghanistan's seemingly endless wars.

This book is not light reading. Plan time to savor the rich descriptions and ponder the serious themes. It is a book that will stay with me for years to come.

Barky Learns His Way
Barky Learns His Way
Price: $2.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun collection, November 3, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a collection of seven short stories written in rhyme. Barky is an adorable puppy who makes new friends and has adventures that lead him to the conclusion, “I guess it’s really true that mothers do know best.”

The stories are interesting and moral values are taught gently. The rhyme almost always sounds naturally conversational. The cute illustrations are not credited, so I assume art is another of Jill Porter’s talents.

I enjoyed the stories, and I think my grandchildren will, too.

The Feathered Flounder Writer's Guide
The Feathered Flounder Writer's Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and a Pleasure to Read, November 3, 2013
Although this book was written as a guide for submissions to an online publication, it contains a wealth of useful information for all writers. The book, itself, is an example of excellent writing worthy of study. Its instructions, tips, and discussions are well organized, clearly written, and informative. Each of the sixteen chapters is spiced with interesting and often humorous anecdotes that effectively support its points. The author respects the reader's time by staying on topic and avoiding unnecessary padding.

This is by far the most enjoyable writer's guide I have read. I was so impressed with it that I am now reading some of Paul Soderberg's fictional works.

This case fits my HTC 4G Sensation perfectly. There is enough grip along the sides to make the phone easy to hold but not so much that it would be hard to slide the phone into a pocket. It is attractive and the quality of the materials and construction is excellent. I am very satisfied with it.
