5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great -- Even for Women above 45, September 18, 2005
I read this book in late April, started following it on May 1 and have lost 35 lbs since then. I'm healther, have twice the energy and have decreased my family's food bill. Not bad for a $20 investment.

This book is great for women who are discouraged by the recent crop of articles that say women of a certain age can't lose weight. And the family benefits as well. While my kids and husband weren't overweight, my daughter lost 7 lbs; my husband lost 8; and my son now bikes everywhere and no longer eats junk food. They are all definitely healthier and happier.

I've tried to follow many diet books, plans, etc. This is different. It explains the differences in diets, explains the chemistry behind food and what it does to you. At the end, it's a blueprint for how to live your life, from an eating and exercise point of view.

For those who haven't hit bottom, this book may be too much work. But for those of us who really want to live the second half of our lives with quality, this is a must read and must adhere to.

In addition to the book, other supporting resources are (1) the recipes section of [...], and (2) some kind of software to keep track of your eating, nutrition and exercise. The software will keep you on track as you learn how to adjust your eating. The recipes will help you implement the advice in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Explains How You Feel Going through a Divorce, May 21, 2005
Don't wait until the divorce is final to get the book. The emotions described begin the moment you and your partner begin discussing separation. Explains the negative and positive stages of divorce recovery and -- when you're in one of the bad stages -- gives you hope that there is an end to the pain.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disservice to Anyone Who Wants a Fundable Business Plan, May 18, 2004
This software is a joke for anyone who would want to use it to get a bank loan or venture capital. For example, you can set a 3-year or 5-year forecast. Then it asks you to apply a growth rate to your year 1 sales, and it applies that growth rate over the entire forecast. Anyone knows that growth rates vary year-to-year based on the stage of your business.
I won't even get into how bad the expense forecasting section is.
Anyone trying to raise money will be told their plan is worthless when they present it to investors. Whether the funding source comes from a bank or VC, they will want to see a monthly (12 months) build to a quarterly (12 quarters) to an annual (5 years). In other words, they (and you should) want to see if the cash you're asking for will cover the needs within the financing period. This software won't support such a basic, critical requirement.
Don't waste your money. This software is amateur.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adds Much-Needed Context to Personalities, November 29, 2003
This book does an excellent job of synthesizing the political beliefs of the many founders of our country, providing context of both time and economic conditions. It is a well-written, engaging book for those of us who got caught up in the new round of biographies -- John Adama and Benjamin Franklin, most notably -- that renewed our love of U.S. history. It puts these figures in context against each other and gives us something to build from as we continue the exploration of our country's roots.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Airplane Book, May 4, 2003
This is a great airplane book: a story that is absorbing and well written enough to compensate for being stuck for hours on a plane. Sizzling sex is not part of the story at all, but a good plot is. Unfortunately, the book ended before the plot ran out of steam, which is why it gets a 4-star instead of 5-star rating. Devereaux should have spent more time creating depth around the romance as well as unraveling the mystery -- in other words, should have been a longer book. But it was well-written and the supporting characters were interesting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than Her Last Several, April 28, 2003
Nora Roberts sells a huge number of books, but if you've read her for a long time, you'll notice that, for the last five years or so, they are written from a "Nora Roberts" cookie cutter in the Nora Roberts book baking factory. Anyone can write them. They're getting pretty dull to the point that I've passed on several of her more recent books, where I used to buy them all.
Well, this one follows her pattern but the plot is interesting enough to pull the characters along. Not that the plot is believable, but everything is put together well enough for an OK book.
If you want to read good Nora Roberts, go back five years and more to her older books.
It is unfortunate that many of the classic romance authors are in this cookie cutter phase.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read, December 16, 2001
Barbara Freethy is a good writer. Both the heroine and hero are likeable, believable characters who go through self-discovery processes as they fall in love with each other. They become better people able to gain perspective and make commitments because of what they go through together. The author showed some strength in developing the book the way she did as well. While it's clearly a romance novel, it isn't totally a fairy tale.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too many under-developed sub-themes, December 16, 2001
This book had a good story line and was entertaining. However, the author had a tendency to place story threads in the book that were never integrated into the plot. She wrapped the book up too quickly to do justice to the threads. Cynically, I would guess she was trying to do some marketing for a multi-book series. Or, she needed a better editor.
Bottom Line: A good read for those who don't get bothered by poor editing. But for those who also like well-crafted books, may want to pass on this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-Written and Fun, December 16, 2001
If you like historical romance, this one is a good bet. Was very well written and fun. Not any surprising twists, but a good, easy read when you're looking for an escape.
