5.0 out of 5 stars Please credit the creators of each character (10 of 13 on the cover co-created by Jack Kirby!), December 9, 2014

This review is from: Marvel Encyclopedia (Hardcover)
Outstanding reference marred by one thing: it lacks CREDITS for the creators of these Marvelous characters.

Would it really hurt anything if fans knew how many of Marvel's most popular characters were co-created by Jack Kirby?

(Hint- 10 of the 13 characters on the cover. Not bad for a guy who hasn't worked at Marvel for over 30 years.)

The art is great and writing is a treat- by Marvel editors, archivists, and terrific writer/game designers like Matt Forbeck.

Like the previous edition, it is not error proof. A few minor errors popped up in the first minutes reading it. For example, on two consecutive pages, Betty Brant's dark brown hair is inexplicably bright red , and in the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants listing, and Nocturne is listed as "Black Tom Cassidy."

Er, perhaps Betty's hair was a sly reference to the way the 70's animated Spider-Man TV series inexplicably made that non-canonical change. And Tom Cassidy was using Nightcrawler's image inducer to look like Nocturne after the Brotherhood turned on her...

Where's my No-Prize?

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding work spanning a century of brilliance in applying the therapeutic power of role-playing for self-exploration, November 22, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Outstanding work spanning a century of brilliance in applying the therapeutic power of role-playing for self-exploration. J.L. Moreno's discoveries through psychodrama changed theatre, sociology, psychology, and culture, and laid the foundation for social media and online social networks.

It's a fun read about a fascinating time that takes us from J.L. studying under (and disagreeing with) Sigmund Freud to one of the most timely students of his work, Tina Fey (and may be the only book to have them both as important characters.)

If there is one criticism for this richly detailed book about a man who spans a century of turbulent ideas, it's that it does not fully explore the ramifications of psychodrama in today's online world and role-playing video games. Perhaps in a future edition?

Great quote, from the young J.L. to Freud: "You analyze their dreams. I give them the courage to dream again. You analyze them and tear them apart. I let them act out their conflicting roles and help them to put the parts together again."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great research into the moral and spiritual value of video games, March 28, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Excellent work. It clearly shows the moral dimension of video games and the value of game play in our spiritual lives. Extensively researched but very readable. Dr. Leibovitz explodes the conventional media narrative of games as immoral. I think a few heads are going to explode, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book every teenage girl should read- as well as the boys. And parents., April 13, 2013

This review is from: Uses for Boys (Paperback)
Wry, touching, wise, and deeply revealing, this remarkable book is a complete pleasure to read.

I have not read a coming of age story by an author this fearless since Mary Karr wrote The Liar's Club. Like her, Erica Lorraine Scheidt is a keen observer of not only the lies of others, but the way she rewrites the difficulties her own life. She has a gift for remembering and conveying what it feels like to be young and overwhelmed by events.

Her spare writing style makes the book a pleasure to read, even as she explores difficult subject matter and exposes the innermost secrets of her life. Her authentic and fearless voice makes Uses for Boys very helpful reading not only for young women, but young men as well. And there are more than a few parents who could use this book more than their kids.

Uses for Boys gets my vote for most compelling title of a book I've heard this year along with my strongest recommendation. For a first novel, this book is a sign that a significant talent has emerged. I can't wait for her sophomore effort.

Ooma Scout (to use with Ooma Hub VoIP Phone Device)
Ooma Scout (to use with Ooma Hub VoIP Phone Device)
13 used & new from $25.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful to put your second line on a separate set of cordless phones, February 25, 2013
Great device.

I can confirm that a single Ooma Scout can be used to automatically route all calls to and from your secondary Ooma number to a phone attached to the Scout- no button pushing required.

This is like having two completely separate phone lines with separate numbers. Attach a different cordless phone base station to the scout and you can use many cordless phones on the second line as you want without the need for an Ooma Scout attached to each phone.

Very convenient. $125 (Premium cost) per year for for two lines is about as good as VOIP pricing gets.

Beautiful album that is well worth seeking out. Grace Griffith has one of the most soulful voices and the song choices are excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but imperfect, April 1, 2012

Nice idea for a collection, good choices, and some good performances, unlike some notable weaknesses in other Amazon classical collections.

Amazon really needs to include full information, like composer.

Also, some have too much tension to be truly meditative. Like #4. Adagio (from String Quartet in C, Miklos Perenyi, Bartok Quartet.

But for two bucks, how can anyone argue? I just hope the performers are getting appropriately compensated.

2.0 out of 5 stars Breaks easily and the button does not work on Evo, December 8, 2010
These "Made for your HTC EVO 4G by Research In Motion" but the button does nothing on Evo. It does not answer calls when pressed. I bought two and neither button worked. Also, the black part of the ear bud popped off the silver part of the earbud. Three of four earbuds broke in normal use within a few months of buying the two headsets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ordinary Town, Extraordinary Song, March 1, 2003
From the best album I heard last year, and the performer I won't get to see this year. I regret that I discovered Dave Carter too late to see him live.
This song and this album are rejuvenating a whole genre, with great riffs and lyrics as good as anything in music today.
Do yourself a favor and discover it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's Start A Campaign to get Singing Detective on DVD!, April 3, 2000
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Now that indie film is red hot, it's time for the Singing Detective on DVD. It's got that edgy indie feeling, except it's better than just about all of them- and better than most mainstream film too. And it's wildly funny. Everyone who has seen Singing Detective knows how amazing it is. With a little marketing push, this thing could be a hot seller. Give us DVD!
