The Housekeeper and the Professor
The Housekeeper and the Professor

4.0 out of 5 stars A Novel that stays with you long after you finished the book, August 9, 2009
Very much in the style of "All the Names" by Samarago this story evolves around four characters that are identified simply as: I, professor, the sister-in-law, and root. Like other great Japanese writers Ogawa defly captures the atmospheric sense by almost humbly describing houses and the daily activities of the housekeeper. The result is a jewel that slowly reveals itself to the reader. The surprising aspect is the rolle mathemathics plays in the story. A wonderful book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy to read Rei has done it again!!, April 2, 2008
My congrats to Madam Massey for writing another great Rei story. This time happening in Hawaii. What wealth of information and descriptions; as always i learn so much and feel a little wiser on all things related to Hawaii society and history. Rei has also grown in the face of adversity, she is less impulsive.... and the new characters are just are a delightful mishmash of corckiness. I do get the sad suspicion that this may be the last of Rei's adventures. I just hope there is still more to get in trouble for our heroine!! Definitly worth waiting for!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Yet Another Great Rei Book, April 4, 2007
This review is from: Girl in a Box (Hardcover)
In this new adventure, the reader has the opportunity to read on the makings of a new spy. How carefully the cover story and the training have to be develop a "personality profile". Then, the reader is allowed to stoll in the poshiest department store in Japan, thru the cover of Rei as an employee. Its a delightful book that grabs your attention since the first page. Rei's character is growing older and more complex. Yes she has made a lot of mistakes, but to me that is what makes her more interesting and fresh...i never know how she is going to react! That is what keeps me reading.

There is something to be said about the careful description of garment labels. It is a very Japanese thing to do; it seems many Japanese are enamored about couture names. It is only normal that our Rei Shimura is also very interested in them too!

I am eagerly awaiting for the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A compilation of folk stories from Japan, April 3, 2007
Lafcadio Hearn published a series of short stories to be printed in a famous periodical in US. These are a few of those stories. His approach is reminiscent of Washington Irving, Tales of Alhambra. That is to say, that the stories are part folk, part his own imagination or views. Just like a Gaugin's painting of Tahitian women, Mr Hearn "recreated" his own Japan. The stories and descriptions are beautiful, very atmospheric, and easthetic. They are a pleasure to read over and over.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy Cocktail Shaker for every day use, March 30, 2007
For those of us who happen to be a little clumsy around kitchen tools this acrylic shaker is a welcome edition! We use this shaker in our store all the tyme to mix iced drinks!!! It is so easy to use because it already have measures for famous drinks... well we do not use alcohol for our drinks but the ratios are almost all the same. Easy to wash and no worries since it wouldn't dent or brake like glass or stainless steel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive study on Genji culture, March 20, 2007
Mr Morris is my hero! He manages to make an extremely complex subject a joy to read and study...Gosh, i wish other subjects could be this engaging. In the world of the shining prince everything has a protocol and a reason to been, Mr Morris manages to explain many important details that may, at first, be just tiny observations and passing glances in the story. This study book provides readers with tools to better understanding the kilometric "Tale of Genji"
