4.0 out of 5 stars Fun space opera adventure, December 7, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'd give it 4.5 stars if Amazon allowed that. I won't describe the story since that's been done well by others.

This is the second in the series, and was just as entertaining as the first. It also continues to be the best use of a not-quite Doc Smith character in another series, including the fun bits of Smithian dialogue that the character can't escape speaking.

Whether you enjoy early space opera of A.E. Van Vogt and Doc Smith, or late-20th stories from Schmitz and Daley, or the newest Liaden stories of Lee and Miller, there's a good chance that you'll enjoy this series too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made a huge difference over cracked old pads, December 7, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
After several years of use the pads on my MDR-V6 headphones were flaking around the edges and fabric on the inside part was split apart and showing the foam underneath.

I bought these pads so that I'd stop getting little bits of black flaked padding on me after using them, but that wasn't the only problem I had.

After replacing the old pads, I noticed that the sound isolation was improved a little and the bass response was much better. Apparently when the pads fall apart to the point mine were at it affects the sound too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Before, Between and After, July 28, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
When reading a good book I'll sometimes think about scenes that might have happened before, between and after the story as written. This feels like a collection of such scenes, written in those moments without any of the nudge-nudge wink-wink foreshadowing that often appears in prequels.

There are interesting moments in the lives of Val Con and Edger, Moonhawk and Lute, Daav, and many others. Some stories fill in gaps or answer questions about how they met, others are just stories about other times in their lives outside of the novels.

This is not a set of stories for the first-time reader of Lee and Miller. For that, I'd recommend either Conflict of Honors (now part of the collection "The Dragon Variation") or Agent of Change (now part of "The Agent Gambit").

Pfaltzgraff Cappuccino Pasta/Dinner Bowl
Pfaltzgraff Cappuccino Pasta/Dinner Bowl

2.0 out of 5 stars Warning - quality control has declined, July 28, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The Cappuccino place settings and bowls that I got about 4-5 years ago were flawless, but the 2 bowls that I bought this month both had noticeable flaws. One bowl has a "dimple" on the inside surface, while the other had both a "dimple" and a "pimple" on the inside surface. If you are picky about your stoneware, be warned that you might need to buy and return several sets to get one good one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Demo of a fun and challenging game, February 8, 2011
King's Bounty The Legend and Armored Princess are turn-based strategy games that are similar to the Heroes of Might and Magic games. I'd suggest starting with The Legend first, or buy the collection that includes The Legend, Princess and Crossworlds (expansion pack for Princess).

I enjoyed Heroes of MM I-III quite a bit, but also like the King's Bounty games. The games are simpler in that you don't have a set of castles that you must defend, and battles for enemy castles are the same as regular battles on the world map. That can be a good thing because you're free to roam around the lands without rushing back to defend your home.

Also, unlike Heroes of MM, the enemy strengths are fixed (with more distant lands holding stronger enemies) so you don't have enemies becoming impossibly strong if you don't attack them soon enough. In Heroes I always hated having to rush off before I quite wanted to because the designers had given the computer armies that increased much faster than my own.

The hero types do play differently: as a fighter you concentrate on building massive armies with magic as a supplement, while a mage character uses spells of mass destruction as their first line of offense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining adventure yarn in an exotic culture, October 9, 2008
This review is from: Whirlwind (Hardcover)
Like Clavell's other books, this is an adventure tale set in a culture that was unfamiliar to most Westerners when he wrote it. This time it is oil workers in the Middle East trying to escape the revolution in Iran, with the story told from both western and Iranian viewpoints. It was an entertaining read if not quite as good as King Rat or Shogun.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended for Liaden fans, December 28, 2006
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this based on others saying it's a good book for fans of the Liaden novels by Lee and Miller. Sadly I must disagree.

The Liaden novels are set in a richly detailed universe, with complex but not confusing stories, well-drawn and unique characters, and romance of the heart and spirit.

This is set in a generic and thin universe, with a simple story, interesting main characters but cardboard cutouts for the rest of the cast, and a romance that seems mostly based on the flesh. It's a decent book, but not even close to the same caliber as the Liaden novels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant waste of talent, September 28, 2006

Grant-Lee Phillips sings with sleepy pleasantness on this collection of covers, perfect for a late dinner in a candlelit lounge. It's a harmless place-holder while we wait for the next album of his own original songs, and is easily recommended to his fans.

If you don't already own his other music, please buy Mobilize or the Grant Lee Buffalo CD Mighty Joe Moon instead. Both display excellent songcraft, sweeter yet more intense singing, and wonderful music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good B-list space opera, September 12, 2005
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
"B-list space opera" might seem like faint praise, but Anvil is not E.E. "Doc" Smith or A.E. van Vogt in their prime, he is (to borrow Eric Flint's description of Laumer) a journeyman rather than a master.

There is quite a lot of enjoyment to be had in reading the Baen books collections of Interstellar Patrol I-II and Pandora's Legions, and I recommend all of them, but I can't give the fifth star I bestow on Smith's Lensman series, Brian Daley's Hobart and Alacrity trilogy, or Lee and Miller's Liaden novels.

Still, recommended to anyone who enjoys a good tale well told.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quiet soulful groove, July 7, 2005
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hotel Vast Horizon (Audio CD)
Whitley's music has shifted from style to style but always with elements of jazz and blues that appealed to me. This CD is quieter than most his others, and at first listen seems more limited in the sound palette he uses. But after giving it a few listens I found myself attached to "Silhouette," and soon after started hearing the songs as having a consistent mood rather than a lack of variety.

Highly recommended for fans, for new listeners I'd suggest Living With the Law or Terra Incognita as a first CD.
