2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing., December 31, 2014

Although this radio has many nice features including tone controls, the AM reception is unacceptable and the overall sound quality in mono or stereo is mediocre. Very disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent web belt., June 4, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This Columbia belt is about 1/8 inch wider than most of the web belts on the market but still works well with jeans and casual pants or shorts. It is more substantial than virtually all of the cheapie web belts sold and well worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best DVD version of best Mozart opera, January 11, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mozart: La clemenza di Tito (DVD)
This dvd was purchased as a gift for a fellow lover of the best musical instrument; the human voice. I purchased the original release of this 2003 performance several years ago but never put my feelings for it into print until now.
After approximately 20 viewings over the years, this has moved to number three on my list of opera favorites. Being a Verdi nut, Traviata and Rigoletto are Numbers one and two. Essentially perfect operas because Verdi in his middle period never lets the incredible music stop. If Mozart had cut the last act of Figaro in half, It would move up to be included in my top five.
This is not written as a commentary on my taste, so on to the issue of La clemenza di Tito. This singspiel, in my opinion is the best opera that Mozart wrote. His love for the clarinet comes into play a couple of times but the use of the basset clarinet in Vitellia's final aria is truly wonderful. The cast is as good as it gets and as a group, certainly far above those of the other dvd's available. Speaking of other available videos, I have owned or seen them all and although many will accept only these period performances, in my opinion (and that's what it is, folks) they are all unwatchable compared to this performance.
That's the good stuff: conductor and cast clearly a dream team.
The only thing that will turn some people off is some aspects of the stage direction. The director introduces some nonsensical bits
that certainly could and should have been omitted. However, producing a quality opera may be the most difficult of all stagings, so
grit your teeth through the few silly bits and enjoy the great music and singing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Florez--Open your eyes please!, November 17, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Verdi: Rigoletto (DVD)
I don't have much to offer that the 3 previous reviewers haven't covered. The additional praise must be for the marvelous costumes in the opening scene.
As for the negative; if someone hasn't already done so, please tell Florez that when he is being recorded in a live performance to stop closing his eyes in the middle of an aria . Stay in character and stop acting as if you're singing to yourself in the shower. Yes, Pavarotti did it regularly but at the end and not during an aria. It is really distracting to this viewer, almost as bad as some singers glancing at the conductor or prompter. Stay in character when being recorded live.

4.0 out of 5 stars Acceptable Bach, January 27, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This performance of the Bach Cello Suites is O.K. but comes in second to the incredible live performance by Tortelier whose emotional force is breathtaking. The poor quality images of the Tortelier disk are an irritant but his performance (mistakes and all--remember this was a live performance) clearly overshadows all others available on DVD in my opinion. Maisky once again, gives a competent performance with excellent image quality on the disk, lacking only a tinge of the visceral impact I would like with these Bach Suites.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lip Synching---Uggh!, December 26, 2009
This review is from: La Boheme: The Film (DVD)
I bought this film on blu-ray from Amazon but it was defective and I returned it for refund. My library had the dvd and I brought it home with great expectations.
What a disaster! The video quality may be o.k. but it takes someone who is definitely not an opera lover to put up with a production where the singers are OBVIOUSLY lip-synching. (Pavarotti's Rigoletto with the incredible Victoria Vergera as Maddalena is an even worse example of a production rendered unwatchable because of the apparent idiotic presumption that the viwer would accept it because of the star power involved)
Shame on everyone involved in this mess. Zero stars if allowed.
Save your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 star musicianship, 5 star audio, 1 star video quality., December 16, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I must agree with the previous reviewers regarding this recording with the exception that no one mentions the poor video quality. This was recorded in 1990, not 1940 and yet, the video quality is closer to a second generation VHS tape than what you would expect in a modern video. I would love to hear an explanation of the poor video quality if one exists. Was compressing all 6 suites on one disk a factor? My technical ignorance doesn't give me an answer.
I know that I have a tendency to be negative about various aspects of recorded operas and recitals but shoddy work deserves to be criticized. On the other hand, great work such as this Tortelier Bach has my greatest respect. His attacking the Gavotte in #6 seemed to put the neck of his instrument in jeopardy and made you very aware of his deep feelings for this music. My wife and I broke into applause upon its completion (hard to imagine outside of a live situation).
This is a great Bach recital, definitely worth tolerating the unsharp image.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, November 17, 2009
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this DVD by accident because I was looking for another recording by Christine Schafer. Her Gilda along with a great cast (except for Alvarez) show Verdi at his most visceral. My favorite Rigoletto in spite of the tenor.
Back to Bach; I cannot agree more with the previous reviewers nor can I add any more superlatives. Watching Harnoncourt is really a joy along with the soloists, chorus, and a terrific group of musicians.
I do have one area of complaint however. I have no idea who was responsible for the packaging but to include only a list of the cuts/titles is idiocy. Nothing on the singers, the Concentus Musicus Vienna or their fantastic instruments is included. I would love to blame Kultur because they have put out garbage on a regular basis but as I stated, I don't have any way of knowing who made the decision to stick it to the buyer once again. Fortunately, the disk quality is outstanding.
