Being a rabid fan of "A Confederacy of Dunces", I was haunted by the back story on John Kennedy Toole. MacLauchlin was able to provide a nuanced look into the man's life without resorting to any sort of hero-worship or character assassination. The author was also adept at fleshing out the character of the times that Toole was living in, adding an area of interest even beyond the author. The writing style is lovely and melodic, but still is able to deliver the facts and timeline in a concise manner. This is certainly a well done bio and a must read for any Toole fan.
