5.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable and Lightweight Hiking Boots, September 2, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Very comfortable hiking boot. I wore them brand-new on a 13-mile backpacking trip and they performed great. No blisters, no hotspots, no nothing. When I first took them out of the box I thought they almost looked like a basketball or high-top sneaker, but they are stiffer, sturdier, and provide greater support than sneakers do.

These boots don't do anything to keep water out though. If you are going to be hiking in rainy/wet weather your feet will get wet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Swedish Anthem by Ultima Thule, September 2, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Svea saga (MP3 Music)
"Svea Saga" proudly, defiantly provides a great tale of important Swedish history. And the song -- the music -- is so good, so well-writen and performed that it practically gives me chills every time. I think I have listened to pretty much the entire Ultima Thule catalogue by now, and believe Svea Saga is probably their best original song. Certainly top three anyway. What an anthem! So powerfully delivered! It screams "I am Swedish and proud of it, and proud of my Swedish ancestors!"

Very nice high quality sticker. It was pretty much exactly what I was looking for. If anything it was just a little too long on either end, so I had to cut it down a little to shorten it before I put it on my car, but that was no big deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fills in the "Blank Spots", December 18, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was unaware of the existence of this full set of the Arn series in the U.S. until someone recently emailed me about it, and I'm grateful they did! I see it's only been available since June. I have had the two-hour American-release movie for some time now and have always liked it quite a lot, however I was aware that a lot of information was missing and/or glossed over. It was frustrating not to be able to know what I was missing.

Watching this full series double-DVD was wonderful, like finally scratching an itch that you just couldn't ever reach. I like the way more of the minor characters are given time to develop, it makes the full film more satisfying. Especially interesting to me is the secondary character of the Norwegian Templar Harald Øysteinsson, and his relationship to Arn Magnusson. Harald scarcely exists in the condensed American film version, but is well-developed in this full series version.

The only complaint I have is that toward the end it is shown that a bunch of Arabs came back to Sweden with Arn following his time as a Templar in the Holy Land. This is a serious historically inaccurate flaw. This would never have happened (Arabs living in Sweden in the 1100s). It smacks of having politically correct token Arab characters shoe-horned into the plot in order to make nice with the growing Arab population in modern Sweden. It was stupid, and it detracts from the overall presentation.

Sort of like when Morgan Freeman was cast in Robin Hood. I like Morgan Freeman, but it was simply historically inaccurate. There weren't any black people in the British Isles back then.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hans och Hennes is EU Propaganda, August 19, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Making Babies (DVD)
This DVD is in Swedish (the Swedish title is "Hans och Hennes" instead of "Making Babies"), with English subtitles. I originally purchased it to help me learn to speak and understand Swedish. I have purchased a lot of Swedish-language DVDs in recent years for this purpose.

This is a somewhat interesting story of a young unmarried couple in rural modern Sweden looking to take the plunge into both marriage and having a child. The main problem is they have great difficulty in conceiving, which leads to tension in the relationship and problems in their lives. It seems to be sort of a low-budget film, but that's ok, that sort of contributes to its charm. Interesting, and a story worth watching, but there is a problematic unspoken sub-theme to this film that first time viewers may not immediately pick up on.

If you watch this film, please just be aware that throughout it you are being subtly and sometimes not so subtly subjected to European Union propaganda via both the story line and dialogue with regard to "multi-culturalism" (mass immigration policies), EU rule over sovereign European nations like Sweden, and you are being conditioned to lessen any nationalistic feelings about Sweden you may carry.

Following the credits at the end of the film, the European Union flag comes up on screen with the following text (in Swedish): "This project is partially financed by the European Union, European Regional Development Fund."

So, watch "Making Babies," yes. It is sort of interesting. But please watch it with a critical eye and with the full knowledge that you are being intentionally propagandized by the European Union. Please do not let this EU propaganda in any way modify your own thinking, feelings, or behavior. In fact, in some respects this film is worth watching specifically BECAUSE it is EU propaganda. It provides a window into the mindset of the EU politicians and intellectuals who seek to intentionally permanently deconstruct European nation states as we have known them for hundreds of years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Last Word Completes Excellent "Trilogy", June 19, 2012

Mark Lane's third major book on the assassination of President Kennedy does not disappoint.

As in his first two books, Rush to Judgement (1966) and Plausible Denial: Was the CIA Involved in the Assassination of JFK? (1991), Lane is devastatingly logical, precise, and rational in his deconstruction of massive government propaganda designed to create an air of uncertainty to convince the media, historians, and general public that the CIA somehow wasn't "really" responsible for the professional hit using multiple riflemen that killed Kennedy, and that, ridiculously, the assassination was carried out by a "lone nut" in the sixth floor of a building with a rifle that couldn't shoot straight.

Lane, a defense lawyer by trade, has given Lee Oswald, who never received a fair trial and who in fact was disingenuously aggressively tried and convicted in the court of public opinion by the U.S. government itself ON THE AFTERNOON OF THE ASSASSINATION, a proper defense with his three books. The man is completely innocent. The disgusting little cockroaches in the CIA go scurrying for cover like the lying vermin that they are in the face of Lane's good analyses in his books.

I have visited Dealy Plaza in person, when you are there surveying the scene from the overpass to the immediate west it is patent that the motorcade route was changed to zig-zag onto Houston Street, and then on to Elm specifically in order to bring it by the three tall buildings at the corner of Elm & Houston and also by the wooden fence on the hill from which the fatal frontal head shot emanated. There is no valid reason why the motorcade couldn't have simply continued straight on down Main Street as originally planned, other than the fact that doing so would not have provided the ideal vantage points afforded to snipers at the intersection of Houston & Elm.

If you only read three books on the assassination of President Kennedy, make them Rush to Judgement, Plausible Denial, and Last Word. (Honorable mention to On the Trail of the Assassins by Jim Garrison and JFK Conspiracy of Silence by Charles A. Crenshaw, a doctor at Parkland who knows by direct observation that the wounds on the front of the president's body were entry wounds.)

The Vinland Sagas (Penguin Classics)

5.0 out of 5 stars Ancient Mariners, February 21, 2011
Gisli Sigurdsson provides an informative introduction to The Saga of the Greenlanders & Eirik the Red's Saga, and Keneva Kunz provides an accessible translation of the sagas. There are useful appendices showing diagrams of the likely exploration routes, family trees, ships, and farms the Vikings associated with these sagas would have used.

It was fun to finally read these sagas. I always knew that "Leif Landed First" -- that Scandinavians were the first to discover North America and interact with the indigenous people of North America back in 1000 A.D. However, actually reading the sagas really drives home just how comfortable the Vikings must have been with sea travel. It was nothing for them to constantly move about year to year from Norway to Iceland to Ireland to Greenland to Vinland etc., and various combinations thereof. I am duly impressed.

This review is from: Under the Sun (Under Solen) (DVD)
...this one was well done. I bought the DVD mainly because the dialogue is in Swedish and I am trying to learn the language (I have also purchased several other Swedish movies on DVD to help with that). However, I found that I also really enjoyed the authentic story, cinematography, and dialogue...in addition to the benefit of hearing the Swedish language spoken. Also, if you have heard about the beautiful southern Swedish countryside, but wondered what it really looked like, this movie will give you a good glimpse and feel for it. I have watched Under the Sun a number of times already, and will continue to watch it. It is helping me with the language, but I find I also greatly enjoy the movie and story itself.
