5.0 out of 5 stars Judy At Carnegie Hall...the Musical Document on CD, March 8, 2012
So it appears we've come full circle with the legendary recording "Judy At Carnegie Hall", just released by JSP Records. So much has been written, both about the concert itself and the phenomenal live recording and it's immense impact on our popular culture. Garland was at one of her peak vocal periods when she stepped on that hallowed stage, and thankfully Capitol was at hand to preserve it all. Released first on vinyl, it's initial releases on compact disc botched horribly by Capitol until DCC (then Capitol for the concerts 2001 40th anniversary) released the complete, start-to-finish-every scrap of applause, every note Garland sang and every brilliant annecdote told to her adoring audience that 23rd of April 1961. So why do we need another version of this performance released? Reason being is that the original, mono vinyl version, the musical document that spent 95 weeks on Billboard's Top 200 chart, 13 of those weeks at #1, winning 5 Grammys including Best Album & Female Vocal, has never seen the light of day on compact disc......and that's what we have here with this newest release of the Carnegie performance. I am grateful beyond words that we have BOTH the HISTORICAL document, and this...the MUSICAL document of that evening. While I will always cherish the complete versions, I've always missed not having the album I grew up with.....the album concentrating on Garland's music and vocal artistry, strong and undiluted, without extended applause and chatter. If I have one bit of a complaint, it's that JSP has not used the stereo version, but the original mono that was first released. Being mono, one will notice that the sound lacks the dynamic range and nuances of the Capitol 2001 version, being quite "punchy" and "boxy". Small irritant for the musical richness contained on these two discs.
Which versions to own? Garland admires will, and should, own both......the more casual novice will love the uninterrupted Garland performance of the new JSP version but might be put off by the constricted audio quality. Either way, one and all will experience musical and theatrical brilliance that simply does not exist today, and I'm afraid never will again.

4.0 out of 5 stars GARLAND MAGIC IN OTHERWISE MEDIOCRE CHRISTMAS FARE...., December 21, 2011
I watch this Christmas show every year and it always produces the same reactions in me.....Garland looks lovely in this episode of her short-lived series....beautifully quaffed & wearing a very flattering hostess gown, she's in very good voice..... exquisite when singing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Little Drops of Rain, and an incredibly moving Over the Rainbow....and to hear her beautiful voice wrapping about The Christmas Song (in spite of whatever her and "Torment" were going through) is a very special moment. As for the other elements of the show, for me it's mostly a mediocre affair. Jones is boring, I'm not fond of Mel (Mort!), and cannot stand the way he "conducts" that phony, plastic-sounding chorus. Lorna and Joey should have spent the night with Joan Crawford and her kids (they cannot even remember the words to Silent Night heaven help them!), and Liza is, as another reviewer so aptly put, definitely not ready for prime-time, extremely embarrassing to watch her romping about with her "beau" Tracy, and her rendition of Alice Blue Gown is suitable for today's wretched "American Idol" standards.
Why oh why couldn't the forces at hand just given us more Garland without all the tacky christmas kitsch going on about her?
Again, Garland's artistry is magical to behold as usual, and is the only reason to view this Christmas concoction.

5.0 out of 5 stars LEONORA RIGHTLY SUNG AS BEL CANTO, October 21, 2011
What is it about Il Trovatore that divides opera lovers? Oh yes, I keep hearing that nonsense about the illogical plot scenario and the fact that you need four phenomenally fine singing actors for the principal roles. Well, I'm not going to argue about the latter, because you do need four great singers to fulfill Verdi's requirements. The plot? Get over it and just luxuriate in the genius of Verdi. My quibble with this masterwork is that for far too long the role of Leonora has been sung by sopranos ill equipped for the requirements of this most central role in post Bellini and Donizetti bel canto oeuvre, which basically all Verdi was.
I was raised listening to this work with the Price 1972 RCA recording...thought it was beautiful...then I discovered the 1956 Callas take on it and I felt as if I was listening to this work anew.......never before hearing any of these trills and delicate embellishments.......never heard such a vocally flexible Leonora as this....stunning hues of delicacy, power and good taste..... like I was listening to a Violetta voice in the role.....
Well, that's when it dawned on me that this role SHOULD be sung by a Violetta...and that's been my problem with this most special and spectacular of operas....not the plot and getting the four greatest singers....but that the role of Leonora has been abused and not sung properly for much, if not all of the 20th century. This is not Aida, let alone verismo.
This is a most marvelous recording of this work, and Callas is supreme in this role and this recording. Bel canto at its definitive definition is her interpretation of Leonora.....yes, the previous live recordings find her more vocally athletic....throwing out high, unwritten interpolations.....but here, she's completely at one with the role....singing and acting with complete elegance, finesse, and impeccable bel canto soul and technique......
....I don't believe in desert island mentality, but this is my choice Trovatore to take with me!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars NOW THIS WOMAN IS A TRUE ARTISTE!, March 4, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)

God but I do not know where to begin when describing Adele's new album "21"...

I do remember seeing her for the first time in Q magazine.....I believe Madonna was on the cover promoting her brilliant "Hard Candy" album and I opened to the second page and saw those haunting eyes and expression on this beautiful face and thought that this was someone very special....and then I purchased "19" and was struck by a totally original and beautifully expressive voice, the likes I have not heard in many a year.

Adele's newest album builds on her first success by leaps and bounds and constitutes quite an achievement for one so young. I hear many influences, the most direct to my ears being the great Dusty but listen and you will hear traces of Aretha, Janis, Billie, and even, in terms of truth and soul Garland and Piaf....all the while being a totally individual and brilliant talent all her own. Nobody sounds like Adele today and when you hear her you instantly know who this voice belongs to. This ain't no media pushing commercial pulp!!!

Listen in particular to Take It All, Set Fire To the Rain, Turning Tables, Lovesong, Rumour Has It, and the sublime Someone Like you and you will hear a voice and artistry that will be in it for the long long long run....please Adele, don't prove me wrong!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars "MER GIRL" BECOMES A TRUE ALBUM ARTIST, May 30, 2010
This review is from: Ray of Light (Audio CD)
.....actually, in my humble opinion, Madonna became an album artist with the brilliant "Erotica" (possibly even before with "Like A Prayer")......it infuriates me when folks who grew up with Madge and her hit singles period fail to appreciate her latter work, never understanding that, like all true recording artists in it for the long run (hint...."long run", get it Mariah, Beyonce, Christina, Britney(!!!) and all the other screaming/hip-hop/rap-crap out there in today's quite sad pop music landscape), she learned to express herself fully with the mature & oh-so-fading-quickly "long-playing-album"......just listen to her music and the incredible path since the late 80's.....EROTICA....BEDTIME STORIES....RAY OF LIGHT.....MUSIC...AMERICAN LIFE(so terribly underrated!)....CONFESSIONS ON A DANCE FLOOR......and possibly best of all "HARD CANDY"......Ray Of Light hit with a major impact back in 1998.....solid Techno/Euro/Dance foundation which Madonna always had but here made all the more brilliant with Orbit's influence......vocally sounding light years away from the light & fun "boy toy" timbre of her early recordings (also vocally outstanding in EVITA but that's an entirely different world)......just re-listening to ROL today in our vastly different world of 2010 and it holds up magnificently after not hearing it for sometime......I knew this woman was in it for the long run when I first saw her perform "Like A Virgin".......and looking forward to more new music hopefully soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Childhood Productions Equal Childhood Memories!, January 29, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
WOW! Brings back so many marvelous memories when I was a child. I remember seeing these "Childhood Production"-English-dubbed versions (Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty)advertised on TV and would never miss them when they arrived in my local cinema. Snow White was also shown on television under the banner of "Holiday Storybook" and that is the version that you are getting if you purchase this PR Studios dvd release. The Paul Tripp narration is gone and instead you get a prolog and epilog featuring then popular TV celebrity Chuck McCann, with bits of his narration where Tripp's used to be. Bits of the background score are also altered where the Paul Tripp narration used to be but these are no longer than 5-10 seconds.

I see PR also has released Sleeping Beauty. Now when will Cinderella be available?

4.0 out of 5 stars GARLAND/MINNELLI PALLADIUM 1964 SHELVED AGAIN, August 6, 2009
This review is from: Live at the Palladium (Audio CD)
Well, another attempt to release this flawed bit of history on CD has once again failed......Garland was one of the finest artists of the 20th century and, even with her "slightly" off -peak performance here at the Palladium, she is still a vocalist above everyone else.....Liza on the other hand, just starting her career, simply screams her way out of practically every number, the worst being the final portions of "Who's Sorry Now", where her final belt is nothing more than a hyper shriek/shrill/scream.......at this point she was imitating her mom & Streisand....to listen to Garland & Minnelli sing the "Love" medley created for and stunningly performed by Judy & Barbra originally just proves how inadequate Liza was as a popular vocalist....she comes across as a vocal version of a little girl trying on her mother's clothes.......Garland's "What Now My Love", "Smile", and "The Music That Makes Me Dance"define the high art of popular vocal singing and are among the best performances she has ever given.

please tell me what all the complaining is about the D'Oro release of this mythic night at La Scala????? Anyone that is familiar with "pirate" live sound will not be put off on this wonderful issue.....the sound is exactly as one would expect from a 1950's live, radio broadcast from the Scala......amazing singing from the finest artist of the 20th century.....singing...music....acting....THEATRE at its finest the likes of which just do not exist in our ordinary Rene Fleming world......just shut your eyes & listen to the molten, classical sounds that pour out of La Divina at one of her peak moments in her artistry
