5.0 out of 5 stars Low cost and fast USB 3.0 storage with a normal cable!, July 24, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
There are a lot of USB 3.0 cases out there, some are super cheap and some are way overpriced. This one isn't the cheapest, but it's well constructed and from a trustworthy company. A main selling point of this drive is it's one of the few drive enclosures which use a standard USB cable (USB 3.0 A to USB 3.0 micro-B) instead of a non-standard USB 3.0 A to A cable.

The case snaps together with ease and the HDD/SSD is held in place with friction and a foam block. Thoughtfully they include a second foam block if you do a lot of drive switching and it wears out. The interface is fast - easily getting over 260 MB/sec reads with an SSD (cheapo Kingston one).

Included is a rather short USB 3.0 cable. This is good or bad depending on how you use the drive.

If you need an external 2.5" hard drive it is pretty hard to go wrong with this unless you need something specialty like FireWire compatibility with an older machine.

1.0 out of 5 stars It might be the perfect size, but it's terrible, May 29, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This cover fits my Pro-Ject RM 5 (RPM 5? I see it listed as both - whatever) perfectly, but it's SUPER thin. I would barely classify it as rigid as it can barely support its own weight without warping horribly. Mine even comes with a few marks, dings and other defects in the plastic.

Overall it feels worth it for $10-20, but for $100 they have to be out of their minds. The really, really absurd thing is I was expecting a knockoff because of the reviews and it turns out it's the real deal. Embarrassing for a quality turntable manufacturer.

Does anyone know of a different cover for these players which is actually of decent quality? I hate not having one and I can't bring myself to keep such a terrible cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great laser printer for the size and price!, December 5, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The near perfect home laser (so far).

Our inkjet decided to kill itself by eating 25+ sheets of paper at once, so I figured I'd give laser a shot since we rarely need color printing and (in general,) the running costs are much lower on laser.

Setup was very easy. Followed the little getting started card and removed all the shipping tape, foam, etc. After plugging it into power, I simply downloaded the newest driver and utility from Canon's site as the disc included has a driver not supported by Mac OS 10.10 Mavericks. Although you really should be getting the newest driver no matter what.

After installation you simply fire up the utility, set your wireless info (if you're using wifi) and select the printer on your computer. Had zero issues finding it on multiple Macs around the house with the driver installed. WPA2 is supported despite me reading a spec page somewhere not listing it.

Text quality is sharp and clean. Images look, well, like they were done on a laser printer - as expected. Printing is very fast (for a home printer) - I thought it was still warming up and it had already spit out a page.

The whole thing is very compact and folds up quite nicely if you don't keep paper in it. Even with all the trays out it is still very small. Takes up less space than my multifunction inkjet (since this has no scanner).

So far, the only minor annoyance is the stupid "I am connected to the network" blue LED on the front. Why do I need an LED on for that? I haven't found a way to disable it in software yet. From what I can tell, it stays on during low power mode as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great solder, easy to use, November 25, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a really high quality, thin solder which is perfect for electronics work. Saves time and money by allowing you to simply wash the boards off instead of stocking up on flux remover (but let's face it, you need to have a can for occasional use on other solder).

The flux comes off very easily with just hot water. I generally soldier my board and leave off anything damage by water - such as relays, and wash the whole board with hot water and perhaps a bit of dish soap. The flux is quite active and will start damaging the board in a couple weeks (or at the least, turn waxy), I highly recommend a prompt board cleaning.

T. Carson is right, the flux has a very odd smell when burning, but you get used to it. The smell is a small price to pay for really clean solder joints.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great drive if you need BD support cheaply, September 1, 2014
This low cost drive was really worth it. Works out of the box with no issues under Mac OS X (Hackintosh machine), rips (hit over 6x) and plays Blu-ray discs without issue. Drive is a little noisy when ripping due to the high speed, but BD playback is fine since it only runs the drive at ~1x.

MDISC support is a nice bonus if you need to do any archiving.

Keep in mind this is a COMBO drive. It burns CD/DVDs, but not BDs. Too many people give drives like this low ratings because they didn't read what they were buying. :D

5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfectly under 10.9 Mavericks, February 2, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Plugged it in, popped in a disk and in a couple seconds the disk appeared on the desktop. Shockingly Mac OS still has actual icons for a floppy disk built in.

Highly recommended if you need to dump some old files off floppies.

The only minor downside is it makes a hum/whine while idle with a disk in it. I guess that's the price you pay for 2x the RPM. I should also note this drive will not read older 400/800 KB Apple formatted disks (they use a different formatting scheme). 1.4 MB only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, Reasonably Priced and Decent Bundle, January 29, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I picked this drive up during a Gold Box deal since I am looking to replace my 120 GB SandForce SSD from OWC (need that for another machine) and I figured I would give Transcend a shot. The 340 series are their midrange models which use a JMICRON JMF667H, the cheaper 320 series uses SandForce ones (presumably because it saves cost on a DDR RAM cache).

Under 128 KB random and sequential testing shows the read performance is about 30% below the write performance. At 128 KB to 4 MB the read performance jumps way ahead (double that of the write speed). The big sequential tests (20 MB -> 100 MB) show performance in the ball park of their claimed speed on my system. Approximately 500 MB/sec reads, 250 MB/sec writes. More than adequate for a boot drive. Sure Samsung Pro drives will crush it, but that's why you're buying a "pro" level drive.

Install was cake and it even comes with a nice painted metal 2.5" -> 3.5" adapter and of course, screws. No software is included, however, tuning software is available for Windows only from their site.

The drive works flawlessly under Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks on my Hackintosh. Transcend is nice enough to make Mac ISOs available for firmware updates on their older models (this one doesn't have any updates at all yet). It's pretty sad they only have the tuning software available for Windows - I haven't installed it yet, so I can't confirm if changes are made to the firmware and thus affect any OS or if they are driver based.

Earth to Transcend: Not all Mac OS users are hipsters sitting in Starbucks. We want configuration software too. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Crested Gecko LOVES It, July 5, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I picked up this jar of food as I had a bag of the "plain/regular" stuff for quite some time. I figured it was probably getting on the old side and should try a new flavor.

My Crested Gecko went right for it once I turned off the lights. She's eating almost every night now instead of once every 2-3 days. At this rate I might end up of an iguana sized gecko in a few months.

The plastic jar this ships in has a wide opening for a spoon and it works just like their other flavors - add a bit of water and mix. I find my gecko likes a thicker consistency - kind of like BBQ sauce or sour cream. As an added bonus when it is less runny you can really see how much they eat in a night.

Keep it sealed up and in your fridge. This package has an expiry date - something missing from the 16oz plain packaging.

As usual this stuff smells so damn good you might be tempted to make a smoothie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Images Decent - Hardware Sucks, July 4, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Plugged this into my Mac and had no problems using it with any app which accesses a standard webcam (Photo Booth, Skype, QuickTime, etc) in addition to the supplied basic software.

The images are decent - for a low res camera. I was taking some up close photos of CPU chips and they came out okay.

The real problem with this scope is the stand and the focus adjust. The stand doesn't hold the camera. Period. I mean, it isn't even close. It can't support its own wait, let alone the scope. The focus/zoom adjustment dial moves on its own. Once you've gotten the image in focus you will find the image blurs in a second or two. At first I thought it was digital AF the software was doing… turns out the dial just turns on its own. Unless you're holding the focus dial VERY still as you snap pics, you will never get anything done.
