Sort of trite and cutesy. An experienced lawyer might want to skip it, but it could be a good little confidence builder book for someone just starting criminal defense. It is my two cents anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars A riveting account by John Wayne Gacy's Trial Lawyer!, March 10, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is an absolutely riveting account by John Wayne Gacy's trial lawyer. It begins with a forward that explains the whys and the motivations of being a criminal defense lawyer. If nothing else, the forward should be required reading for every public defender or private criminal defense lawyer; it is simply inspirational. The book then takes you on Sam Amirante's and John Wayne Gacy's journey through the hell of the investigation and eventual trial of Gacy. It shows just how tragic, not only the killing were, but the putting to death of Gacy was; we as a society should ashamed of how we resorted to the "pitchforks and torches" method of justice instead of figuring out how to prevent the next Gacy. It shows just how mentally ill, and perhaps, physically ill, Gacy was. It shows how prejudice against homosexuality not only helped to fuel the killings, but the death sentence as well. It make me sad to realize just how little we have come in overcoming those prejudices. Sam and his co-writer, Danny Broderick, take us through the story in an almost poetic body of literature. If you are a private criminal defense lawyer or public defender you need to read this book. Let me walk that back, if you are human being who wants to be more than just a bump on a log citizen in the United States, you should read this book as it is as much of a defense of Gacy as it is a defense of our Constitution and indeed our way of life in America.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Vintage Book about Cook County Criminal Law, February 24, 2013

This review is from: Public defender (Hardcover)
I wish they would re-release this one. Gerald Getty was the Cook County Public Defender almost 4 decades ago as I write this. It is amazing to see that the internal politics of running a public defender's office and the external politics of being a public defender have not changed much at all with the negatives being sadly still true. What is refreshing to see is the same spirit and tenacity that good public defenders have was very well spelled out in this book. Thankfully, that has not changed. If you want inspiration for being a public defender or a criminal lawyer, you would be very well served with reading this book.

American Legal History: Cases and Materials
American Legal History: Cases and Materials
by Kermit Hall
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars In love with a Text Book?, February 17, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is just a very well compiled text book. It starts with pre-cololonial times and spins the yarn of American Legal History with interesting facts and relevant readings to transpotr you back into the history as it occurred. Professor Hall leaves the graphic language of the times untouched so the history breaths. A great book to savor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Defending the Damned is absolutely compelling!, February 17, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
What a great book! I was a public defender in a neighboring county for years. I actually know almost all of the lawyers that were discussed in this book. Short of devoting separate books to each of them,I can't think of a better description and tribute to these unsung heroes of our society. If you are going to defend criminal defendants in the state of Illinois frankly you better read this book. It is so well written that it is one of the 4 real adult books that I read all the way through it one sitting. It is that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get this book if you ever want to drive a car., December 6, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have been a criminal defense lawyer for over 20 years. I was a military policeman before that (mostly reserve forces). This book is a deceptively simple read that has an abundance of really practical advice for anyone who has ever had a drink of alcohol, then driven a car. It is great advice if you are ever going to drive period! It took me about 2 hours to read it cover to cover. The author apparently either was or still is a police officer and explains in great detail the mindset of a police officer who is investigating a DUI traffic stop. I have read an ungodly hoard of books on dui's, but only one other book remotely like this, and only this one goes this far. The book is geared more for the poor soul who is pulled over than it is for a defense lawyer who may be looking for additional tips to successfully defend a client though. Read it before you drive. Even if you don't drink, you could be a target of an overzealous policeman or overzealous laws.

This is a fascinating look at 19th-early 20th Century Illinois Civil Procedure. It is in in a pretty handy and easily accessibly package. As a practicing lawyer, it is great to know where the profession came from in addition to where it is today. I highly recommend this facsimile production of an old time law book.
