2.0 out of 5 stars Becomes increasingly repetitive and predictable as the trilogy goes on, March 3, 2013
I have read all three books in the trilogy. The first book is most entertaining. The opening chapters describe the world vividly, with interesting characters. You can feel the author is trying to develop the characters with each chapter. The second book, however, becomes predictable in both character development and plot lines. Finally the third book, I skipped over most action sequences and even whole pages, and found myself quite capable of picking up the plot again without feeling like I missed anything.

As I read each book, I had an increasing sense that the author is preaching to the readers. In this fantasy world, a good person simply had to follow the "Medium" and everything would work out (that's how I could skip pages without losing the plot, since as soon as I read that the character "felt calm and knew just what to do", then I could skip over the whole battle scene). The religious connotation here is clear. While there's nothing wrong with that, I felt disconnected from the characters because they stop thinking for themselves completely somewhere in the middle of the series, and just mysteriously and without explanation follow the commands from the "Medium", and good thing will happen to them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Almost no connection to the City of Ember, February 13, 2007
The first book in the series, City of Ember, is brilliant. The second book, People of Sparks, is still interesting, although it does not live up to its full potential.

The Prophet of Yonwood, a prequel to City of Ember, is completely dull. It takes so long to get to the point (the point being how Ember becomes Ember and exactly what has happened, etc.) that I rushed through all the pages to find that there are only 2 pages at the very end to connect the plot in Yonwood to Ember. It's so disappointing because I was earnestly hoping that all the details and mysteries that are just hinted in the City of Ember would be unraveled in Yonwood.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tree looks good after a couple of weeks, February 13, 2007
I ordered the tree as a Christmas gift. It arrived promptly in a well packaged box. Despite the fact it was tightly wrapped and left outside for about 5 hours in a very cold day, it quickly recovered after some tender loving care. Its size was about what I would expect, about 3.5 feet from top of soil to the highest leaf. It shedded a dozen leaves in the first week. We have it for about 7 weeks now, and it's doing well and flowering!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for PreK-3 children, January 20, 2007
Short, self-contained, well-written chapters keep my children's attention. There are many characters for a young children's book, but the characters are very well described and each have their own special kirks. Great for reading aloud to young children.

5.0 out of 5 stars My son stops biting his fingers after 1 day, January 20, 2007
My 9 year old son bit all 10 of his finger nails to the point of bleeding for the last 7 years. I've tried other products and methods to no avail. He was very motivated to stop biting fingers because he was starting to notice the social stigma and of course, his fingers hurt! So, after a dicussion of how putting this MAVALA product on his fingers was just a reminder, not punishment, he agreed to give it a try. The first day, he had to brush his teeth 5 times because he bit his fingers forgetfully. The next day, and now almost 3 months later, he hadn't bitten his fingers once. We reward him for each time we clip all 10 of his finger nails to reinforce the good habit of not biting fingers. Just to be on the safe side, he is still applying the product on his nails every week, and we encourage that so he won't slip back to his bad habits. After all, he bit his fingers for most of his life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for 3 to 5 year olds, July 20, 2004
Easy to use, educational and fun game for 3 to 5 year olds. My son, 7, is too mature for this game now, but he used to play it a lot and learned patterns, letter sounds, rhymes and counting. My daughter, 4, is very much into it and is learning the same things too.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too few activities and they are boring, July 20, 2004
My 4 year old daughter really wants to like the game, since she is a big Strawberry Shortcake fan. However, she can only play the game for about 10 minutes before getting really bored and switching to another game. She usually plays certain preschool or kindergarten educational games for about 30 to 45 minutes, so I know it's not her attention span. Most activites in this game are too repetitive with no variations.

The graphics is cute though, that's probably why my daughter still pops the CD in once in a while.
