Being in Love
Being in Love
Price: $8.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Fake Stereo, March 11, 2013
This review is from: Being in Love (MP3 Music)
These songs have not really been remastered; they have been changed from mono into stereo. In the process, several seconds have been added to each song. The original monophonic recordings actually sounded better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Beautiful Music, January 12, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The arrangements and the singing of this choir are exquisitely beautiful. Every song is sung perfectly. The album is a wonderful tribute to the Queen of Heaven.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Lousy Writer Writes About Writing, January 12, 2013
This book about writing was written by a very minor, unimportant author who can not write well. Furthermore, the book is clearly a waste of money at less than 100 pages. In contrast, many famous, established, well-respected authors have written much better, and more complete, books on writing and getting published. Avoid this waste of money, and buy a better book by a more successful author. After all, a famous author necessarily knows more about the writing business than an unsuccessful author knows.

1.0 out of 5 stars Crazy Nonsense, January 12, 2013
This review is from: I Would Be Loved (Paperback)
The needy author became a foster parent because she wanted to be loved, hence the title. This is not healthy. The author herself had serious problems, as her own bio says: "She worked with disabled children for years until, looking for a change, she ran away with the carnival." The book simply tells the sick story of how a needy person whom no one loved found a child whom no one loved. The entire story is pathetic. There is nothing to be gained from wasting one's time reading this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worthless, January 12, 2013
This review is from: Americans Lost (Paperback)
This is a totally worthless book. The interviews with homeless people reveal no useful information, and are extremely boring. Nothing can be learned from this book. There is no actual reason to read this book.

The Last Yahi: A Novel About Ishi
The Last Yahi: A Novel About Ishi

1.0 out of 5 stars An Insane Paranoid Fantasy, January 12, 2013
This amateurish, illiterate, poorly written novel is a disservice to the memory of Ishi. The novel could easily have been written by an adolescent; it has an adolescent's style. That is, the style is childishly melodramatic. The novel is definitely not a compliment to Ishi.

In addition, the tone of this book can only be described by the word "paranoid". The entire novel is a paranoid fantasy in which white Christian America is the mortal enemy of every last Indian.

Amazon sells several well-written, factual, non-fiction books about Ishi. Reader, do not waste your time and your money on this crazy, poorly written fiction, when you could be reading an informative nonfiction book about Ishi instead. The truth about Ishi is even more interesting than is this novel; and the nonfiction books are better-written.

A Harpsichord Christmas With Friends
A Harpsichord Christmas With Friends
Price: $8.99

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Arrangements and Playing, December 14, 2012
These are ridiculously bad amateurish arrangements, played on an organ producing fake instrument sounds. Bill Skees' website says: "Bill's recordings are made using: Rodgers 340 Theatre Organ, jOrgan software with Kent Allman's Symphonic IV (or other) soundfont, Finale music notation software." I have never heard theatre organ sound so bad. Bill Skees clearly does not value beauty in music. But I'll bet he's great at ball games.

2.0 out of 5 stars Over-Processed!, November 28, 2012
These people took some wonderful old wax cylinder recordings by a vocal group called "The Carol Singers" and destroyed the sound, using heavy-handed noise reduction, equalization, and REVERB. They so distorted the sound that the recordings no longer sound like the originals. THEN, to top off their evil deed, they CHANGED THE NAME OF THE GROUP. This group recorded during World War I as "The Carol Singers"; but here on this cd they are called "The Old Time Christmas Carol Singers". That is disrespectful.

Some Easter songs by the same group can be found on another mp3 collection at Amazon, Old Time Easter: Songs and Hymns Of The Early 1900s, in this case with their original name and without reverb.

I have to mention another track in this collection, the track by Santa Claus. So much reverb was used in the processing that he really, truly sounds as though he is singing in a cave. I keep wondering what Santa Claus is doing in a cave.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rare Tracks, but Muffled Sound, November 8, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
One might want this for the few rare tracks; but the noise reduction is greatly overdone, and muffled sound is the result. The beauty of Florence's voice is impossible to appreciate through this cd. With recordings this early, one must be willing to accept a great deal of white noise in order to hear all of the frequencies that were present in the original recording. In regard to her early recordings, only when listening to a recording to which no noise reduction has been applied may one hear the beautiful tones of Florence's voice, and fully appreciate her artistry.

1.0 out of 5 stars Excessive Choir Noise and Coughing, November 8, 2012
Excessive choir noise and coughing ruin this album. On one of the most important tracks, Tomás Luis de Victoria's Ave Maria, there is an extremely loud cough, louder than the singing, at about 1:30. The producer should have recorded a second take of any track which was thus ruined.
