The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets
The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute delight for those mathematically inclined, July 12, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
An absolute delight for those mathematically inclined. This book packages a selection of the great theorems of mathematics in a "Simpson's" wrapping to appeal to some that would otherwise be uninterested. Scattered through the book is a series of mathematical jokes of which my favourite is:
Q: What is the volume of a pizza of radius 'z' and thickness 'a'?
A: pi.z.z.a
There are many more! This is the ideal book for a student to encourage and foster the general interest in mathematics. But it does more than this - it also catalogues a series of mathematical references (some of them jokes) in the Simpsons show! Some of these involve number theory and some involve rather abstruse theorems, all patiently explained with their background history by a masterful mathematical author, Simon Singh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly addictive!, June 11, 2014

I strongly advise against buying this book - it will waste hundreds of hours with fascinating patterns and absorbing connections that most never dreamed of! While requiring nothing more than middle high school mathematics, the text still contains quite advanced ideas - for example and simple proof that Format number that are prime are also the constructible number with ruler and compass. There are also superb discussions (in an entertaining way) of Farey series, primitive roots, Pellian numbers, Pythagorean triples, quadratic residues, prime number distribution and the zeta function, and on and on - never boring. Essential reading for budding numbers' men! The book is not new but it has stood the test of time and is still a masterpiece - one of the greatest time burners I have ever read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Medieval Masterpiece, June 11, 2014

The book of Kells consists if the Latin text of the four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It also contains calendrical information for finding dates of Easter and other Christian festivals. The book has been lavishly illuminated by sumptuous illustrations in staggering colour and minute detail. While the book of Kells is far from unique, it is one of the greatest examples of this type of document and one of the earliest, dating from about 800 AD in north western England. Due to a series of political intrigues, it ended up in Ireland soon after (or even during?) its production.

This book consists of two parts: The first part contains full colour reproductions of much of the original artwork and some of the text. The second part contains an extensive explanation of the book including its history, iconography and details of the subtleties of the intricate Celtic patterns and their (complex) relationship to the sacred text. Such works have much greater value than just the beautiful artwork (which has never been surpassed since) but also reveals much about the culture and prevailing theology - invaluable for the historiography alone.

The aspect that I cannot understand is the detail in the artwork - all accomplished before magnifying lenses were available, but the detail is only visible when the artwork is enlarged many times. The illuminators must have had exceptional eyesight and very steady hands indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good resource, March 20, 2014

This a handy book for people wanting more information about koine Greek vocabulary. The problem of learning a new language is rather fearsome because it involves, among other things, learning a foreign dictionary. People have observed that this task can be made much less daunting by learning only the lexical roots rather than all of their individual cases and tenses. However, it can be significantly reduced still further by learning only the cognate roots. For example, just knowing the cognate root "tith" immediately provides the cognate root of about 50 lexical entries (including tithemi, epitithemi, paratithemi, diatheki and many more.) This book provides a complete list of such cognate roots to greatly facilitate memorisation.

In addition to this, there is a complete list of all words in the NT in the order of their occurrence, plus a complete list of all the verbs and their six major forms - especially helpful for the irregular verbs that do not follow any paradigm. Several other lists are also included such as Latin words, Aramaic words, etc. A very useful reference that worthy of close study

4.0 out of 5 stars Theological History, January 25, 2014

This book reproduces 40 wood-cut pictures illustrating various Biblical scenes - a form of religious art common in the 15th century. Each of these 40 panels is executed to a set pattern with Latin text explaining the picture and its theological interpretation. See sample on front cover.

The book is set out in several sections:
1. Historical context and Introduction
2. The 40 plates reproduced
3. The Latin Transcriptions from the various plates
4. The English translation of the Latin inscriptions
5. Explanation of the iconography and significance
6. List of Bible references in the panels

The reproduction is fair (not wonderful) but gives a good idea of the original, albeit in slightly smaller format. This book provides a wealth of data on what people thought about the Bible and how it was taught to the masses in the 15th century. It is mostly (to modern readers and theologues) quite mystical and silly. I marked it down because the reproduction could be much better that just black and white line (no shades or colour at all!) However, I am still pleased with the book for its invaluable historical significance.

A book that is a beautiful reproduction of the famous, historical printing of this very influential book. The binding is excellent and the presentation is good - the open pages gives and excellent impression of the 1859 edition and how it appeared then.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revised!!, January 12, 2014

I have the edition of UBS4 that I bought in 1994. This version is supposed to be the same edition but the text is different in several ways and it is a big improvement. First, the Greek text (the letters) remains the same, but the critical apparatus has been revised and in some cases changed completely (eg Rom 16:7) with an accompanying change in the accents! Second, the dictionary has been completely revised, expanded and improved. Third, a dictionary of words with very similar meanings is included - this is great value and should be studied by every student of koine Greek thoroughly.

This volume THE standard text for every modern Bible translation (except the NKJV) and is essential for anyone wanting familiarity with the NT text and its variants, which are all listed in the critical apparatus.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book, January 12, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
First some details: The size of the book is smaller than the product dimensions listed by Amazon: It is actually 238 mm (9.35") x 162 mm (6.35") x 15 mm (0.6"). It is thus a very handy volume.

This is a beautiful book that is a delight to hold, handle and read. The soft leather and strong binding allows the book to sit flat. The print is a good size and the format is perfect. The whole concept of this readers Greek NT is brilliant - it has a running dictionary for words that occur less than 30 times, but for most pages is not many. Learning the vocabulary for the words that occur more than 30 times is a much smaller task and makes reading a real pleasure. I find myself learning the infrequent words quite naturally and painlessly!

Each year I use a different translation of the Bible to read and study. This year I am using the Greek text itself and am reading, out load, the Greek as I go. It has proved to be an immense advantage to gain a sense of language rhythm and sound.

For those who want to learn koine Greek, this is the simplest way to do it. (You will still need a grammar to understand the rules, but that is not difficult. Very highly recommended.

This volume is a delight because it is so compact. The type and print is small (necessarily) but quite legible. The binding is excellent and durable. Such an interlinear is one of those essential ways for early students of Greek to cheat by looking at the translation of every word as done of an expert.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor copy, November 9, 2013

Rather poor, black and white version of the very beautiful original. The size has also been reduced from the original and it does not capture the full magnificence of the original printing effort of Gutenberg.
