3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad read, but you'll want to wash your mind ..., March 31, 2015

Interesting read, but this is one of those books where the "good" people are colorless and the evil ones are obviously the author's favorites. Plenty of torture-deaths and twist or two in the character motivations that surprised me a bit. Not a bad read, but you'll want to wash your mind out afterward.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but I hoped it would be better, March 31, 2015

Excellent art and the beginnings of a good story, but not much characterization. Starts out fairly historically accurate but pretty soon we are into fantasy adventure with a touch of Steampunk. Potentially interesting plot points are rushed through with little explanation but a lot of fighting, and a load of historical names are dropped at the last minute- I get the impression that this is a condensed version of something planned as a longer and fuller series. Maybe another volume can amplify things. (It appears that a series of stories is trying to do that)

4.0 out of 5 stars So bad its fairly good, March 5, 2015

Silly but enjoyable- a convoluted plot that could be a parody of an early detective novel, like Wilkie Collins. Much of the writing is flowery- characters do not read, they peruse, they do not find out they ascertain. A lot of the dialogue is studded with exclamation points. Still, when Hume gets the plot going things move along and they aren't boring. He's rather good at atmospheric descriptions and a few of the minor characters come to life for a page or two- there was a portrait of a sharp tongued gossip that had me smiling.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth skimming, March 5, 2015

Very much a period piece- some decent writing in spots but Hagar Stanley isn't much of a detective. If you can't stand dialect writing avoid this book it's full of it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, first couple of books hold up fine, March 5, 2015
Great idea, first couple of books hold up fine, but then the thread gets spun out too thin. By the 4th book I'd lost any interest in the characters & was just skimming for the bizarre touches- Truant is a good writer with a sense of humor but this went on a couple volumes too long. If you do read this (give it a try- its cheap) the plot picks up a bit at the end

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining., August 1, 2014

A decent first start to an intended series. Good historic atmosphere, though we are not in Ellis Peters territory here, this is much lighter. Since this is the first book we spend most of the time meeting the series cast and getting some idea of their strengths and weaknesses. There's a hint of 21st century sensibility in the attitude of the hero, but since this seems inevitable these days I'll let it pass. A reader could do much much worse than this- such as the sequels to The Hangman's Daughter.

26 inch Folding Bike
26 inch Folding Bike

5.0 out of 5 stars Great bike, great price, June 18, 2014
This review is from: 26 inch Folding Bike (Misc.)
I bought this bike directly from the Heartland America website. It was easy to put together except for one point: it ABSOLUTELY requires you to have a 6mm hex wrench to install the handlebars - nothing else will do, and none is included- couldn't the seller have packed one? They DO pack a wrench to attach the pedals, so it makes no sense.

OK- on to the praise; once I put it together and adjusted the seat and handlebars it rode smoothly. Both the brakes and the thumb shift worked fine and I had a fine ride.

Folding it up- the instructions do NOT tell this (they are minimal and written in Engrish) but when you release the bolt lock you have to lift the bolt up slightly to unlock the hinge. The lock fits snugly and I felt no flexing of the frame .

Once folded the bike stands up fairly sell in a built in support if you turn the front wheel to just the right angle. A velcro strap is supplied which does double duty as a trouser strap and to hold the folded bike together. It is light enough for an easy carry up my front steps and into my house for safe storage.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice but so-so, April 3, 2014

A pleasant enough book but there is too much of a disjoint between the light tone of the writing and the fairly dark happenings. Lots of quirky details but not much is made of them, and some of the most interesting characters make an appearance and then vanish. It ended nicely enough but I just didn't feel satisfied- the book could have been longer and worked out in greater detail.

I have a suspicion there may be sequels featuring Becka, her magic house & her quirky siblings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warm, March 1, 2014

A nice warm reminiscent book. Not a lot of point to it though, and some familiarity with stringed instruments helps in understanding. Pleasant reading, but a one time only book.
