I've had mixed feelings about The Greatful Dead as long as I can remember. I can count on one hand the titles that I'd go out of my way for. Garcia was a brilliant player for sure,but I've often found that when he played for others he really let loose more. Case in point: The great solo he ripped out on Grace Slick's "Across The Board". On this solo effort from 72, he co-wrote with resident Dead lyricist Robert Hunter some of his best work. "Sugaree", "To Lay Me Down and "The Wheel" just to name three, became favorites at Dead shows. This album also focuses on Garcia's incredible skill as a pedal steel player, but what really makes this work unique is the second half, which begins with 2 wierd soundscapes{Late For Supper and Spidergawd] followed by the haunting instrumental, "Eep Hour", "To Lay Me Down", which is followed by "An Odd Little Place", another off kilter, almost early Pink Floyd sounding experiment which launches into "The Wheel", a truly inspirational piece. It's not that these experimental pieces are great, it's just the way they are placed and the flow that is established. Tracks 5-10 deserve to be played in sequence. This was a real favorite of mine way back then and it's about time I dug it back out again. One doesn't have to be a Deadhead to see what a great album this is.

Wilson is truly amazing, but not so much for her voice by itself, but the way she transforms non Jazz material no one ever would have dreamed of doing. She doesn't just pull it off. She makes seem as natural as breathing. I can't think of anyone else who could have taken a piece of mid 60's cheese like The Monkees "Last Train To Clarksville" and transform it into a really swinging Jazz number. Her reading of U2's "Love Is Blindness" is beautiful as well as making songs by Hank Williams and Neil Young all her own. There are also a a couple of standard
Jazz numbers here and she's no slouch as a writer. Case in point: "Solomon Sang". There's also her arrrangements which feature a Joni Mithchell style of "Whack Tuning" as it's refered to in the liner notes, as well as some very diverse instrumentation. It might take you a few listens to really get into, but most great music does and this is without a doubt, great!!!!

In My book, this is one of this band's best albums. As another reviewer points out, this is where Trower really perfected his style before embarking on a highly successful solo career. His solo work in my opinion was nowhere near as interesting as the what he did with Procol Harum. After "Bridge Of Sighs", it all sounded like a tired Hendrix rehash. Trower was heavully influenced by Hendrix early on, but had his own uniqueness that added much to the overall sound of Procol Harum. I would much rather hear Hendrix himself, than Trower playing exactly like him. With that criticism out of the way, Trower is simply brilliant here. "Broken Barricades" was a vast improvement over the somewhat underproduced "Home". There are a couple of orchestrated tracks as well as some hard rock numbers. "Simple Sister" is a flat out masterpiece and showcases lyricist Keith Reid's maniacal lyrics set against Trower's guitar, Gary Brooker's firery vocals, orchestrations and BJ Wilson's explosive drumming.
Also of note is how much bassisr/Keyboardist Chris Copping's playing had improved here. There's just a touch of synthesizer in the mix. The band had avoided them up to this point.
Procol Harum remains one of the most inluential bands to emerge from the late 60's. Even The Beatles cited them. Just listen to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", but don't take my word for it. Just ask Brian May. He's pointed out that "Whaling Stories" from "Home" was his inspiration. Pete Townsend will tell you that "In Held Twas In I" from "Shine On Brightly" gave him the courage to write a nice little concept known as "Tommy". You can also hear the influnence of Procol Harum in The Strawbs as well as early Genesis.
I don't know if Procol Harum has been inducted into the Rock&Roll Hall Of Fame. If not, they certainly deserve it when so many artists revere them as a major influence...............

Slick was in fine form on "Dreams", ... Her voice here sounds incredibly powerful. the material here may not be as adventurous as "Manhole", but "Dreams" is by far the most cohesive and consistant recording of her career. Slick has said it many times that she is incapable of singing softly and all the lush orchestrations here can't drown that crystal clear alto. All the cuts here are strong. I even like "Seasons" which sounds like "Gracie Does Rogers and Hammerstein" {Try that on acid!} She really saves the song from being complete corn by some incredible belting toward the end that confirms her status as one of the great belters of all time even though her voice really began to wane over the next couple of solo releases. If you want Slick solo, you've got to go with this and "Manhole".

Procol Harum was, and now that they have re-formed again, a band that alternates between clasicaly influenced ballads and hard blues driven rock. On occasion, the band would perform with various symphony orchestras while on tour. This recording from 1971 is with the incredible Edmonton Symphony and focuses on the band's classical side. It had been out of print for quite some time and I'm more than pleased to see it back. This is an incredible concert,especially when you consider the fact that Robin Trower had just left very abruptly, leaving the band scrambling for a replacement guitarist. Dave Ball nails Trower's parts so well that hearing the original studio material is a bit of a letdown. There's just no comparison between the versions of Whaling Stories. The live one is superior They way Ball attacks on the Grande Finale solo is one of those rare things that I listen to again and again and never cease to be amazed, even after 32 years! Oddly enough. Dave Ball only worked with the group on this album. I don't recall ever hearing of him afterward.
Gary Brooker's soulful voice is in fine form here and still is today. Sure, for many it may seem way too pretentious, but Procol Harum hasn't spent it's entire career doing long overblown pieces. They deserve recogintion for the trail they blazed fusing symphonic music to Rock as well as some hard driving Rock with some occasionaly demented lyrics.
In closing, one of the best live recordings in the history of Rock&Roll!!

I wrote an earlier review on this disc a while back and after many more listenings, decided to re-evaluate. I have to admit I was a bit put off by it at first but it grew on me over time. This is not what those who found themselves fans after "So" would have expected from Peter. At 52, he's come up with his darkest sounding disc in over 20 years. The opening track{Darkness} is enough to cause cardiac arrest on the first listening, but once you give it a few more listenings,the brilliance hits you with the way it alternates between industrial noise shrieks and layered ambient sounds. Other stand out tracks: "Growing Up" which has an almost Bjork feel to it. "Sky Blue" is a fusion of Pop, Blues and Gospel that features The Blind Boys Of Alabama. "No Way Out", "I Grieve", "My Head Sounds Like That" {sounds like a major downer till you realize just how firmly his tongue is stuck in his cheek}, "The Barry Williams Show" (A mean jab at trash talk shows}, and the bleak yet hopefull "Signal To Noise"
All in all, a return to a more edgy sound though not quite as good as PG 3 or Security. Middle age has not left Mr Gabriel without his teeth

In 1980, Gabriel confirmed what I had suspected him of on his first two albums. That being he was the most important artist to emerge from Britain since David Bowie. His third album was turned down by Atlantic. The execs thought he was commiting comercial suicide. So off he went to Polygram and it outsold his first two releases combined. It was his first use of African sounds and percussion which he refined much more on his next release, "Security". Then along came "So", which broke him into superstardom, something which he never seemed quite comfortable with. Six years passed before "Us" came along. It combined some of the more commercial aspects of "So" with his ever expanding movement into World Music. It didn't fare so well, but did mark his movement into confessional songwriting.
10 years later, now at the age of 52, he seems to have shed most of his commercial ambitions for a darker, more brooding sound that has more in common with his third and fourth albums, though it doesn't really sound like either of them. His lyrics have retained the confessional approach of "Us", but that is all that it has in common with that effort. The opening track scared the bejesus out of me the first time with that industrial Nine Inch Nails shriek. It's really a brilliant track the way it alternates between noise and thoughtful layered ambience.
The rest of the disc is much more subdued. The songs are long and often begin and end in quirky ways that make it not very radio friendly. Though it recalls his more challenging work of the early 80's, I don't feel it's quite as good, but still a great album. Those who gravitated to Gabriel because of "So" will very likely be put off by it. Those who have followed his career since Genesis should find it rewarding. This is an album that requires many listens and I'm probably reviewing it too soon and may revise my rating later.

Grace Slick will go down in Rock history as one of the most influential vocalists. You can her her influence in many female vocalists from the 70's on. Concrete Blond's Johnette Napolatano in particular. Sadly, her solo work didn't quite cut it compared to her work with Jefferson Airplane and her co-work with Paul Kantner. What makes this album really worth the purchase is the 15 minute plus title track, which features some incredible vocal gymnastics. Better Lying Down is great pornographic Blues. Eat your heart out Alannis, Liz Phair and Madonna. To be fair to Alannis, she pretty much dropped the potty mouth after her first release. Come Again Toucan is nice, but what really weakens this effort are two songs. It's Only Music, which she not only didn't write, but doesn't even sing on. David Frieberg handles that one. Then there's Epic 38, where she's only singing harmony. Good song, but why put it on a Grace solo effort?... She really wanted to work more in the context of a contributing band member as opposed to solo work. In closing, buy this for no other reason than the title track and Better Lying Down. That voice will send shivers up the back of your neck

Nona Hendryx began her career with Patti LaBelle And The Bluebells in the early 60's. When they changed their name to Labelle in the early 70's, Hendryx became the main songwriter. Her voice was the anchor. We only got a little taste of her singing ability back then, and what an ability it is! After the breakup of LaBelle, Nona released one hard rock album in 77 and gravitated toward the New York Art rock scene, where became an extended member of Talking Heads and worked with Bill Laswell's avante garde rock outfit, Material. In 83, she released "Nona", co-produced and backed primarily by Material. It was a critical success and fared very well in markets with progressive formats, but the problem with it was that R&B stations felt it was too much Rock for them and Rock stations were a bit put off by the soul aspect. When Tina Turner broke through in 84 with "Private Dancer", I thought for sure that this would open the door for Hendryx. Rolling Stone once stated that she could out shout Tina from 50 feet away. Unfortunately, Turner's success didn't open that door and this collection was all that remained of her catalog, and is now unavailable after only being out for all of two years. She had all the ingrdients for superstardom (voice, writing ability, stage presence and stunning good looks) and it just didn't quite click.

To describe her voice, I'd say that Gladys Knight comes to mind, though her voice is a bit higher and has far more range.
This collection offers a fine overview of her carreer, though I'd really like to see her whole catalog reinstated. Personal favorites of mine here "Transformation" which really makes Grace Jones sound like an amatuer. "Keep It Confidential" shook dance floors around the world and is one of the most commercial songs she did. "Design For Living" remains my all time favorite from Hendryx and features an all female back up band that includes Laurie Anderson, Heart's Nancy Wilson, Talking Heads' Tina Weymouth and Patti LaBelle singing up a storm in the gospel tinged refrain. Also worth mentioning are the rocking "Tax Exile", the ballad "Wind Of Change" which features Peter Gabriel doing a gospel sounding call back vocal to Hendryx's silky alto, and "I Sweat, Goin Through The Motions".
To sum things up, Hendryx is an artist who crosses the genre's of Rock, R&B, funk, and even New Age Electronica, though she is guided more by a Rock asthetic than anything else. At times, I think she tried to be a bit too commercial to gain more acceptance, but the bulk of her work is proof that pop or dance music can be art. I hope that someday she records and tours again.

This is one of King Crimson's finest works. It is certainly more focused than anything before it and nothing since then has quite hit the nail on the head the way "Discipline" does. My only minor complaint is that it's a bit too short, clocking in at less than 38 minutes. Listening to this recording is like looking at an M.C. Escher sketch with your ears! You have to focus beyond what is obvious to get the full hypnotic effect. "The Sheltering Sky" is in my top five favorites from this band. The guitar work is like nothing I've ever heard before or since. Tony Levin is probably the greatest bassist since Jaco Pastorius, and there just are not enough superlatives for the drumming of Bill Bruford.
This album propelled King Crimson into the 80's. It has an 80's feel to it, but still sounds fresh 20 years later. One can't deny the obvious Talking Heads influence. That has much to do with the fact that Adrian Belew had just left a stint as an extended member of that band. Fripp himself had also contributed on the Heads' "Fear Of Music" in 79, so it's fair to say that both bands were an influence on each other. There is also an undeniable similarity between the voices of Belew and Byrne, though Belew is a much better singer. One listen to the beautifull "Matte Kudasai" is proof of that, and this new remastered version also contains a second version of that piece that was originally on the vinyl editon, containing an addtional guitar track from Mr fripp.
This has all the elements that make up King Crimson at their best. Hard dissonance countered by other pieces that are soothing. This type of contrast is an element that has been somewhat lacking on later releases, though they still provide us with some of the most creative and challenging listening in rock music.
