5.0 out of 5 stars An earlier book in the series, it is set ..., June 24, 2016
An earlier book in the series, it is set in 1938 Berlin, and Bernie Gunther is called back into service with the Berlin police. It is historical fiction incorporating real people and real events. This is when Germany was heading into World War II. Austria and the Sudetenland are added to the Third Reich, Bernie becomes involved in the investigation of a serial killer in Berlin. The story ends with Kristallnacht (Chrystal Night) when Jewish owned businesses were destroyed and synagogues were burned.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a HEAT SENSITIVE product not recommended for shipment in hot weather, June 24, 2016
This is a HEAT SENSITIVE product not recommended for shipment in hot weather. It is a gourmet chocolate flavor that will appeal to chocolate connoisseurs. It has a blackberry flavor. Chocolate and wine are usually a good combination but I have not matched a particular wine with this flavor of chocolate. The Amazon price, at this writing, seems a bit higher than local store prices, but it is sometimes hard to locate in local stores.. It is now my favorite chocolate, with Cherry Tango coming in a close second.

3.0 out of 5 stars Loaded with potato starch, June 19, 2016
These chips have a nice flavor, and the Amazon price is lower than local grocery stores. The problem has been noted by other reviewers. The manufacturer has lowered his costs by loading them with potato starch which adds nothing except calories. If I want potato chips, I will buy potato chips. There are 140 calories per ounce, with only 1 gram of protein and 1 gram of fiber. In comparison, Beanitos Pinto Bean chips have the same calories, but have 4 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber (with zero potato starch). per ounce.

5.0 out of 5 stars A continuation of Bernie's post war life on the French Riviera, June 19, 2016
This novel follows the previous novel in the series that ended with a final chapter on the Frence Riviera in 1952, with Bernie being offered a job at a leading hotel. It is now 1955, and Bernie has encountered someone from his past. Bernie has been hiding under an alias, ant this man knows too much about his past. There are flashbacks to wartime East Prussia in 1944 to 1945, that establish a reason for revenge. Many bad things happened during the war.

The is a post war world of espionage and blackmail. There are many forms of blackmail, and many ways of dealing with it. Bernie did not become a survivor by being dumb, and can spin a story that fits the occasion. The characters are a mixture of real and fictional, with an afterward about some of the real characters. You know that Bernie will survive to appear in the next story. The same cannot be said about some of the other characters.

As a side issue, we have Bernie's version of the fate of the Amber Room.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aware winning Canadian novel set in Montreal, June 15, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Luc Vanier finds himself drawn into a tangled Web. It starts with the abduction of a woman in front of a Montreal café, but escalates form there and becomes a double plot, one plot dealing with human trafficking, and the other with corruption. You will get a viewpoint of Montreal that will make you think twice about wanting to move to Canada. The novel moves forward as several plots involving different characters. There is, of course, Luc and his associates. There is also Katya Babyak, a young Ukrainian woman lured by false promises made by human traffickers and forced into prostitution. And there is Sophia Luna, a journalist from Guatemala who has fled from enemies in that country. Sophia is a woman who knows too much, sometimes by accident.

All of this moves forward and winds together and Luc tries to determine just what Sophia was working on. Many characters are introduced, many of whom will not survive in the dangerous and corrupt environment. There are some deadly evil people who want to tie up loose ends. It is dangerous to be a loose end. Luc has his own ways of resolving problems, and sometimes there is a falling out among thieves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chronologically, the books have been written out of order ..., June 11, 2016
Chronologically, the books have been written out of order. To follow Bernie Gunther's life, you should read them in chronological order rather than in publication order. This novel which was first published in 1991, is set in 1947, and starts out with Bernie back in Berlin with his wife after escaping from the Russians who were using him as slave labor (in historic times, that was often the fate of prisoners of war). It follows events in "The Lady from Zagreb" which was published in 2015 covering Bernie's life from 1942 to 1944.

Bernie is a resourceful individual, willing to kill when necessary, and is well respected for his skills as an investigator. This novel finds him going to Vienna on a well paid assignment. Things are never as they seem, and we find a complex situation as Bernie tries to carry out his assignment. Not everyone wants him to succeed. There are some casualties along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to put down, June 7, 2016
An interesting book, but a bit gruesome in spots - not for the faint of heart. The novel is set mainly in World War II Germany using a combination of real and fictional characters. The main character, Bernie Gunther, was a police inspector before moving on to other employment, and was then called back into service in Nazi Germany during the war. Like many other people, his main motivation is survival in Nazi Germany. He is regarded as a good investigator, and his assignments result is seeing many bad things. You will, for example get a side trip into Croatia where Serbs are being systematically massacred. His final assignment takes him to a woman he loves, and a web of trouble for himself. There is an afterward set in the early 1950s.

This is an award winning novel well worth reading.

This review is from: The Bluebell Wood (Paperback)
This is a different type novel moving between characters. The characters are brought together in a Catholic boarding school for girls located in rural England. The plot moves through the backgrounds of the various girls, some of whom are refugees from war torn areas, and some of whom are from bad home environments. It is mainly a commentary on victims written in a narrative form, and describes world trouble spots as well as some bad home environments and abused children. It comes to an explosive end, with an afterward. There is an underlying religious commentary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another case in Sunflower County, with overlap into adjoining areas., May 29, 2016
This is the usual mix of Sarah Booth's love life and a mystery she needs to solve. A baby appears on her doorstep. Trying to find the mother of the baby is the mystery, wrapped around the fact that her resident haunt Jitty wants Sarah Booth to get busy and produce an heir. The story is set in rural areas northwestern Mississippi with a side trip to Nashville as part of the case. The case leads in some unexpected directions, and you meet people who are an assortment of the good, the bad, and the ugly. The long running issue of who hates Sarah Booth is still unresolved.
