5.0 out of 5 stars primes rule again, November 27, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Incredibly small and light. Perfect materials and workmanship, an exquisite camera-object. Fast, quiet, accurate focus. Extremely sharp including corners, from full aperture. Beautiful light and color. Perfect for street photography, well-paired with the equally fine panasonic 20mm 1.7. Now an equally good micro 4/3 40-50 f2.0 or 1.4 is needed for portraits (this one with stabilization), and micro 4/3 will be irresistible.

1.0 out of 5 stars beward of faulty focus mechanism, August 9, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Brand new from Amazon, focus mechanism faulty. Hunts back and forth, sometimes finding focus, sometimes not. Nikon quality control clearly inadequate. Returned to Amazon. Better to buy this one in a store where you can check it out on the spot. To the back of the class, Nikon.

1.0 out of 5 stars seriously defective product, August 5, 2010
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am a semiprofessional photographer, and have published over a thousand images, mostly in books. Over the years I have used various Nikon bodies and lenses and one or two from other 35mm brands, in additon to working with MF and 4x5.

The new, mint copy of the Sigma 17-50 2.8 OSM that I received was so defective as to be for all intents and purposes useless, not only for an experienced photographer but I would imagine anyone working with a DSLR. In twenty minutes testing this lens, I found that:

1)the image was not critically sharp at any aperture or any focal length, especially away from the center, where it tended to be distinctly unsharp. I am not pixel-peeping here.
2)the autofocus appears to be off.
3)the autofocus stopped working at one point. I had to jiggle the lens (turn it back and forth in the mounh), and it restarted. This happened twice.

From the reviews, I had expected that this lens would be sharper than, for example, my Nikon 18-200 in the 17-50 range, but instead it is of substandard quality, period. Possibly I received a defective copy of the lens, but it is so poor that one wonders about Sigma's quality control.

In this case I am truly thankful for Amazon's excellent return policy.
