5.0 out of 5 stars almost 40 years old ...and not a wrinkle, August 16, 2013
This review is from: Blackheart Man (Audio CD)
first heard this in record store the week it came out. bought it on the spot and I have played it regularly ever since. It ranks among the handful of records I could not live without it in my very bloated record collection. Killer vocals, incredibly subtle arrangements, gorgeous sonics, as beautiful a reggae record as any. Scratch that. As beautiful a record as any. A total masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing package, amazing music, as good as it gets, January 11, 2013

marvelous box, chock full of gems, some obscure some well known. Extremely intelligently sequenced, out of chronological order and with no regard to race or region, hence making a very strong point for the magnificence, color-blindness, and time-defying power of music. Sound quality is as good as any such collections comprised of old 78 transfer. The moron who left the only non 5-star review of this extraordinarily revelatory set, claiming this is atrocious sounding, has clearly never heard old recordings. Ignore his ignorance and buy this now. It is a must-own for all or any who cares about American music.

1.0 out of 5 stars great ideas / horrid translation(s), November 12, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: La Folie Baudelaire (Hardcover)
While the author makes one arresting point after the next, pulling from masterfully picked quotes, the book fails miserably from a horrid translation job, especially when it comes to Baudelaire's quotes. The author is magnificently eloquent when he describes Chuck B's non-pareil use of language, yet flops with every butchered excerpt. Maybe what we're reading is Baudelaire first translated into Italian and then that Italian translation translated into English. Like looking at a xerox copy of a photo of a painting. Regardless, if the master of French language deserves this book (and he certainly does), he is at the very least worthy of the kind of translation effort we have been spoiled with in recent decades. If neither the author or his hack translator were up to the task, where was the editor when we needed him? Maybe at an opium den, in tribute to Baudelaire, dozing off, when he should have been furiously making notes.

And if a proper, literary translation was too much to ask, how about having the original French bits as footnotes? Even if the reader's French is primitive, it would serve Baudelaire a lot better than these pale, tepid, detumescent renderings.

Poor Charles must be spinning in his Montparnasse grave, justifiably full of bile and contempt for his manhandlers. They have done him wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars a marvelous read., November 12, 2012
Highly recommended read. Beautifully written, always stimulating and thought-provoking, this is a far more than a biography of a fascinating man. It is the picture of an entire time and world, masterfully rendered by a fascinating pen.

Five stars all the way! Long live St. Remy de Provence!

1.0 out of 5 stars JUNK- STAY AWAY, January 12, 2010
Worked well for just over three months. Then image starting disappearing altogether. LG, who know how flimsy their stuff is better than anyone else, only warranty their products for 90 days. WHY? Because they break shortly thereafter. That's how shoddily built they are. Three long, tedious phone calls to customer service to get it serviced, have to pay $69 plus shipping two ways just to have it looked at. And it will probably break again in 90 days.

5.0 out of 5 stars her best yet?, June 13, 2009
This review is from: California Years (Dig) (Audio CD)
smart, funny, moving, often all within one song, Sobule is a remarkable talent deserving far greater acclaim. Her new record may well be her career's finest. Subtly & tastefully produced by Don Was (and featuring Jim Keltner (!!@@$) on drums and the awesome Greg Leisz on assorted slide guitars, California Years needs to be heard by anyone who cares about songwriting. And you have never seen her play live, do not miss her. She will mesmerize you.

1.0 out of 5 stars major disappointment from a genius, March 16, 2008
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
While it's always lovely to hear Mr. Perry's trademark croak, here the croak in question is not sadly framed by his mind-blowing sonic tricks. The king of reggae producers did not produce this effort. instead, we get a background of utterly pedestrian loops, the kind you hear on every yuppie dance mix. The kind that sounds tired today. And that will sound so dated in a couple of years. Nylon sting guitars (so Gipsy Kings) and loops so rote is almost painful to hear. Stay away. Kinda sad. What was he thinking? Why?
Let's hope it's not the end of Lee Perry...get back to work, Upsetter. You've upset me!
